Lyrebird Studio is a secluded retreat on a rural property of over 40 hectares on the edge of the Watagan Mountains, 1.5 hours north from Sydney & 15 minutes from Cessnock. Get away from technology & unwind, listen to the wind in the trees, and observe the local bird and wildlife. The only tweeting you will hear will be from the local birds, including lyrebirds, king parrots, black cockatoos and many other species. We have two large wedgetail eagle nests up the mountain and you can often see them soaring in the updrafts they are a sight to behold! Watch out as the wombat (wallabies and kangaroos) come down to graze in the surrounding paddocks most days. At night, wombats come out to feed and the local possum population occasionally hold a noisy gathering in the bush!
Amenities include air-conditioning, a compact kitchen and living area with comfortable couches and antique furniture. A potbelly woodburning stove adds to the ambiance in the cooler months. The living room also offers a large screen TV and DVD player, radio and CD player. The bedroom has comfortable King Bed and luxury linen, including electric blankets. The bathroom has shower, all linen, and heated towel rail. A sofa bed can be made up in the living area at an additional cost.
Due to our location mobile phone reception is patchy. If you live for texting, phone calls & internet, this is not the place for you! Lyrebird Studio is meant to be a break from communication, spend some peaceful time together, and generally switch off!
The owners of this stunning Studio live in the properties main farm house approx. 50m from the back of the Studio. The Studio itself has been cleverly designed so any guests enjoying this cosy accommodation are offered privacy and seclusion.
Lyrebird Studio is self catering with a convection microwave & outdoor BBQ.
Small Dogs allowed on request only. Please contact us direct to discuss your options .

Wildlife at your doorstep, city far away
Wombats, red-bellied parrots, kangaroos, echidnas...all within metres of your front door. The only sounds you hear from sunrise to sunset are bellbirds and kookaburras. This is a getaway that successfully allows you to escape phones, emails, touch screens and work. There's a library of books, music and DVDs to unwind and friendly hosts who go out of their way to help. The studio is in a valley but within 30 minutes drive of Cessnock for food. An absolute charmer for couples or singles who like peace and quiet, and want to tour the vineyards but without the steep prices.
Scott, We appreciate your lovely review and are very pleased that you had the chance to unwind and relax at Lyrebird. The property really is a little sanctuary away from modern day life. We look forward to welcoming you back one day. Alex and the team @ Weekenda
Beautiful property, stunning location
My partner and I booked Lyrebird Studio for a mid-week 2 day stay.
The location was ideal - it was remote enough to get away from it all (we didn't have much phone reception, which was lovely!), yet still close enough to Cessnock so that we were able to spend a day visiting family-owned vineyards only a short 10-20 minute drive away.
Peter met us on arrival and was very welcoming, showing us round the property and he kindly gave us a recommendation on where to have dinner (The Royal Oak Hotel, which had lovely food).
The property was very clean, well kept and had a lovely homely feel.
We were supplied with everything we could possibly need for our stay.
Peter and Di were kind enough to tell us not to rush with our check out, as no guests were checking in the following day - we did not hesitate and asked to extend our stay by another night - we really did not want to leave :)
I have already recommended Lyrebird Studio to my friends and family and we will definitely be returning in the future.
Thank you Peter & Di for providing us with a lovely break.
Laura, Thank you for taking the time to share such wonderful feedback with the online community. I have forwarded your comments on to Peter & Di and they will no doubt be very happy also. We look forward to assisting you when you're next in the area. Kind regards, Alex
Enjoy the Surroundings
We really enjoyed our stay here. It was quiet and set in bushland like we wanted however we were unaware the owners of the property were on the same land and their home sits less than 20 metres from and looks down onto the studio. Although they were lovely and very helpful it was not exactly the private escape we wanted for our anniversary.
Excellent place to stay
We had a relaxing time away. The property was beautiful. The bed was so comfortable. This place was a great place to escape from the city. It was also a great place for our two dogs to run around & play.
We will definitely stay again.
Enjoyed Our Stay
This is an excellent setting in rurual bushland with heaps of kangaroos. If you want a peaceful holiday then this is for you!
Tranquil setting, gracious hosts
I stayed at this delightful little cottage for two weeks to escape the hustle and bustle of the 'big city' while studying for professional exams. It is an idyllic location with a resident herd of kangaroos and soft chorus of bird calls. It is fabulously positioned for exploration of the Hunter Valley but remote enough to feel like a retreat. The cottage is not really a studio, but an elegantly appointed 1-bedroom house with all the comforts of home. The grounds are well maintained and the hosts Di & Peter are fabulously welcoming. A note on technology for those struggling to break the link: I had texting reception with Telstra, but phone reception required a little creative positioning (under a nearby large tree!). All-in-all a great little gem for a peaceful getaway. I'll be back.
