Overview

About the property

Osprey Heights Accommodation is a wonderful place to stay at the very beautiful Vivonne Bay, an unspoilt fishing village with its history going back to the mid 1800's. There is a queen bedroom and a double bedroom which look out over native trees to the river, and another smaller bedroom with a double/single bunk bed. There is a fully equipped kitchen, and all linen etc is provided. The accommodation overlooks the Harriet River and at the bottom of the driveway is a cute timber jetty where you can watch the sunset over a crisp chardonay or launch a canoe and paddle off to the beach or upstream to tranquil waters with bird life in abundance. The house is surrounded by coastal vegetation and the reserve at the rear has a meandering path that will lead you to the magnificent Vivonne Bay Beach - voted the Best Beach in Australia in 2003. It hasn't changed, the locals have kept Vivonne Bay to themselves; it's very laid-back and pristine as ever. Central to the core attractions on Kangaroo island, Vivonne Bay is probably one of the most strategic places to stay on Kangaroo Island.

Wildlife Galore right at your door

The rugged South Coast provides many opportunities to interact with wildlife either on conducted tours or driving and walking on your own. Tamar Wallabies, Long-Nosed Bandicoot, Koalas and Echidna, the elusive Platypus, Australian Sea Lion and New Zealand Fur Seals, even the very occasional Leopard Seal - watch out they can be mean! Fairy or Little Penguins are as close as the jetty and they make for a great nights viewing, after which you can throw a squid jig off the jetty and land yourself some calamari: serve salt & pepper style - fresh and delicious. There are lonely beaches that provide myriad shells and remnants of sea creatures, or beautiful driftwood as a memento of your travels to this beautiful island. For the more daring there are jet skis, professional fishing charters and scuba diving, and right at Vivonne, you can hire kayaks, quad bikes and sand boarding gear, even booking night tours.

Write a novel or paint an art masterpiece.

Osprey Heights is peaceful. Vivonne Bay has ever changing landscapes so you will never be bored. But, if its solitude you want you can throw away the relaxation CD's and listen to the waves crashing on the shore or walk on beaches where you will be lucky if you meet other people at times. Spot the rare Hooded Plover or the Sooty and Pied Oyster Catcher and from the comfort of the balcony at Osprey Heights, see one of only a few raptors in the area, the beautiful and skilful Osprey that lives on the Harriet River - right on your doorstep. Sometimes, you will see echidna, a koala, kangaroos and wallabies, a possum or a goanna...just outside the door at Osprey.

You can walk the coastline to your heart's content and often not see sight of another human ... just you and the wilderness. You will need plenty of space on your digital camera, good hiking shoes and a good companion.

Great property in a wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at the house conveniently located in Vivonne Bay. The kitchen was well equipped with food basic like tea, coffee sugar, herbs and spices, flour etc. It also had plenty of pot and pans, cups, glasses, plates etc. We had the added bonus of Austar channels on the TV when we managed to find time to watch the TV. Plenty of firewood provded. Basically the house is very well stocked with most things that you need or might have forgotten to take with you! There is a local general store that has now re-opened after a fire. Take a walk and explore the areas beautiful surrounds. Highly recommended.

A lovely place for a get-away.

We had a great time here. It is centrally located on the south coast and is convenient for the attractions. The house is quite large and well appointed - we wanted for nothing. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Secluded, beautiful views, well equipped.

I was a bit nervous about booking at Osprey given one of the more recent reviews but really liked the look of the location and views from the deck. The house is exactly as described and the photos show what you get when you arrive - a really comfortable home away from home. From the look of things there have been some updates done pretty recently. We had no trouble with the Foxtel and there were heaps of recent release DVDs available to watch. A POD coffee machine was a welcome surprise. Kitchen had everything needed for cooking. There were heaps of supplies available for use at no cost like salt, pepper, oil, flour.... we forgot a few of those things and felt welcome to use the supplies. We had free firewood and loved playing Table Tennis when the weather was bad (although I hated losing as much as I did!). Communication was straight forward, Tammie answered all our questions and we had no worries. Would stay here again in if I went back to the Island.

Poroperty not as described!

  • 1 of 5

The house itself was functional. The photos used to entice you to stay are predominantly of the local hamlet and not of the property in particular. The Foxtel box had broken when we stayed and this meant no TV as free to air cannot be got in that area. We were not aware of this until we got there. There was an attempt to get it fixed but the managers did not listen to advice given- the box was still not working when we left after a week. The shower leaked atrociously during a shower resulting in puddles of water on the bathroom floor. The cooker icons could not be seen as they had been rubbed off so using the cooker was guess work.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry you did not enjoy the accommodation Maria. I am going to Osprey this weekend and will add more photos of each room to ensure people are confident on the house setup. One of the things we pride ourselves on is providing clean, well equipped, enjoyable accommodation that delivers on what we describe online and reviews have reflected that commitment to cleanliness and quality. Being remote it can be challenging to resolve technical issues and the issue with Foxtel didn't persist due to our failure to listen to the advice from Foxtel or a lack of effort to resolve! It did take some time to fix due to challenges with Foxtel's service however our commitment to getting the issue resolved as fast as possible did lead to resolution of the issue. In the meantime we stocked up the house with new release DVDs across a multitude of genres to ensure people had something to watch. We haven't received any prior feedback about leaking showers or functional challenges with the house however are spending a week at Osprey refreshing kitchen utensils, performing maintenance and updating appliances to ensure all our guests enjoy their time at Osprey. When things break down in remote locations, it can cause problems despite our best efforts to resolve, but we are 100% committed to providing a great experience for guests and will always do our best to ensure problems are avoided if possible, and resolved quickly where we can control the outcome. I am genuinely sorry Maria didn't enjoy the accommodation but we are always trying to improve the quality of people's holidays and will take on board the feedback and ensure the same problems are not encountered in the future.
