About David Colin

I was born and raised here in Rome. In the late 1960's, my father was one of the founders of the American University of Rome (AUR), and, indeed, the apartment was the administrative office and classroom (and impromptu party space) for AUR over a number of years. So, the apartment has been in my family for over 40 years.

Although I now live near Washington, DC, where I am an economist, I come back to Rome as often as possible. Despite all my time here, Rome continues to be a fascinating city that always has more to offer. I hope you find the Eternal City as welcoming and wonderful as I do.

David Colin purchased this apartment in 1992

Why David Colin chose Rome

This apartment has been in my family for more than 40 years, was completely remodeled and furnished in late 2010, and is now available for rental as a self-catering apartment. Upon booking, I will send you a detailed information package on the apartment, the neighborhood, restaurants, and sights. We offer complimentary airport arrival pick-up for our guests, and an English-speaking guest services manager will meet you at your arrival. Linens, welcome snacks and beverages, utilities, wifi, taxes, check-in/check-out, and end of stay cleaning are all included in the price. Additional car service or cleaning/linens can be arranged.

What makes this apartment unique

In the heart of Rome's Historic Center, just around the corner from the famous Spanish Steps, this spacious two bedroom, two bathroom apartment is surrounded by fine dining and fabulous shopping. It is within walking distance of the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and many other historic sites and museums, and near the subway, taxi stands, bus stops, and bike rental. Located in a traditional Roman palazzo, the apartment was fully renovated in 2010 and is now available for rental (5 night minimum).

Guestbook comments from the owner

Long before our trip, the owner sent us a hugely helpful list of resources and ideas of things to do in Rome; the apartment itself has every guidebook imaginable as well as maps, plus a binder full of tips on places to eat, places to avoid, how to navigate the subway (simple, as it turns out, and just steps away). Al that, combined with the unbeatable location, made us feel we had the inside track on the city. The apartment is very tastefully decorated, both modern and comfortable, as well as being quite large. At the end of a day of walking, it was great to sprawl out in the living room and watch a DVD or listen to music -- there are books to read, movies to watch, an iPod with a good selection of songs. The beds are comfortable and even on New Year's Eve, with fireworks going off all around us, we had no trouble at all sleeping thanks to the white noise machine in the bedroom. There's a lot of storage space and many thoughtful touches (umbrellas; bandaids; lots of soap; laundry detergent). It was like borrowing the home of a thoughtful friend who has great taste and a genuine desire to insure you have a good time. The apartment was the number one reason we had a wonderful time in Rome, and we will be back, Asap. [Posted on flipkey.com January 11, 2014]

Fantastico

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful week in Rome was made all the better by this apartment. The apartment itself was perfect for my wife and 2 daughters (11 & 13). It is ideally located especially with the metro station so close and comprehensively fitted out with all the fundamentals but it is the owners attention to the extra details that sets this accommodation apart. From the airport pick up and welcome basic groceries through to the large array of information, brochures, books, DVDs (couldn't resist watching Gladiator again) and tips on the neighborhood and Rome itself. The tips on where to eat were much appreciated and very accurate. One of the most helpful items for me was the Ipad mini loaded with lots of useful Rome apps - in particular the mapping app which navigated us around Rome with complete ease.

I have no hesitation in recommending this apartment and I will happily stay here on any return visit to Roma.

Fantastic Apartment and Experinece!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 (daughter 20, son 18) spent a wonderful week in Rome staying in this amazing apartment. This is a 5 star property with a 5 star owner, based on the level of communication and the anticipation of our every need and convenience. The apartment is very modern and well appointed, and provided the ideal family setting for our trip. The owner was a pleasure, and offered terrific insight not only for our enjoyment of the property, but also for enjoying the neighborhood and our trip to Rome. And even as the apartment exceeded our expectations, THE LOCATION OF THIS PROPERTY IS BEYOND BELIEF!!! It was a very short walk to the best shopping, dining, pharmacy, grocery store and other amenities (a cab stand was 1 1/2 blocks down the street), and most importantly, the neighborhood was safe such that our college age kids were free to explore the area on their own. The property is located in between the Spanish Steps (4 minute walk) and a little further to the Pantheon, and we visited these amazing sites, piazzas and even the Coliseum just by walking. Highest recommendation!

Relax and Enjoy Rome

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic vacation in Rome, with the Spanish Steps Apartment as our home base. The apartment is spacious, thoughtfully equipped, and provides plenty of everything! The beds were comfortable, the towels were plush, the kitchen was just right for breakfast and aperitivos, with plenty of "make you feel at home" touches, like various kinds of tea and also some yummy Aperol for aperitifs. We had some issues with an appliance that went on the fritz but the owners and their agent provided plenty of quick attention to these issues.

The apartment's location can't be beat, just a few minutes' walk from various bus stops, as well as close to the Spanish Steps metro. Just past the Parliament building is a lively shopping/dining district with plenty of great choices. The pizza joint nearby was just right after a long day touring, too.

Spanish Steps Apt - lived up to every expectation

  • 5 of 5

Lovely, spacious property in convenient location near Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. Description and photos of the apt were accurate. Owner has spared no "expense" to ensure that visitors had a fabulous experience. The apt is decorated in a contemporary décor; very inviting, comfortable, and clean. Owner's suggestions for sightseeing, dining, drinking, and shopping are spot-on (he provided material prior to the visit and tons of material was available on-site). The location is excellent for taking in all the major sites in Rome. It is also convenient to the Metro (Spanish Steps), which was incredibly easy to navigate - although once we got our bearings, we were able to walk everywhere. A caretaker is available; fortunately, we did not have to bother her as the apt was in tip-top shape and everything we needed to navigate the apt and the city were at our fingertips. The beds were very comfortable; water pressure and temperature just right; and the addition of a washer/dryer unit is a real plus (10 day vacation). The transfer from the airport to the apartment on our day of arrival, arranged by the owner, went smoothly and we were ever grateful that we could access the dwelling following an early morning arrival. The Spanish Steps Apt exceeded our every expectation. I would recommend the apt to anyone and everyone - and look forward to a follow-up visit. JOB WELL DONE!
