About David Colin

I was born and raised here in Rome. In the late 1960's, my father was one of the founders of the American University of Rome (AUR), and, indeed, the apartment was the administrative office and classroom (and impromptu party space) for AUR over a number of years. So, the apartment has been in my family for over 40 years.

Although I now live near Washington, DC, where I am an economist, I come back to Rome as often as possible. Despite all my time here, Rome continues to be a fascinating city that always has more to offer. I hope you find the Eternal City as welcoming and wonderful as I do.

David Colin purchased this apartment in 1992

Guestbook comments from the owner

Long before our trip, the owner sent us a hugely helpful list of resources and ideas of things to do in Rome; the apartment itself has every guidebook imaginable as well as maps, plus a binder full of tips on places to eat, places to avoid, how to navigate the subway (simple, as it turns out, and just steps away). Al that, combined with the unbeatable location, made us feel we had the inside track on the city. The apartment is very tastefully decorated, both modern and comfortable, as well as being quite large. At the end of a day of walking, it was great to sprawl out in the living room and watch a DVD or listen to music -- there are books to read, movies to watch, an iPod with a good selection of songs. The beds are comfortable and even on New Year's Eve, with fireworks going off all around us, we had no trouble at all sleeping thanks to the white noise machine in the bedroom. There's a lot of storage space and many thoughtful touches (umbrellas; bandaids; lots of soap; laundry detergent). It was like borrowing the home of a thoughtful friend who has great taste and a genuine desire to insure you have a good time. The apartment was the number one reason we had a wonderful time in Rome, and we will be back, Asap. [Posted on January 11, 2014]

Comfortable , clean and great location

  • 5 of 5

From the beginning experience was wonderful. Making the reservations, getting transportation from airport to apartment, checking in and out was handled with expertise.

Friendly driver meet us at airport on time, readily assisted with luggage and pointed out areas/sites along way to apartment.

At apartment we were greeted by very friendly representative of property management, who showed us around apartment and ensured we had everything we needed.

David (owner) provided us with list of very helpful information that provided recommendations of things to do, where to dine and shopping areas. The iPad came in handy as well.

Apartment was clean, in great location within walking distances to Spanish Steps, Trevi fountain, Pantheon, best shopping and several dining options - causal to upscale.

Highly recommend this apartment!

Perfect Location and Beautiful Apartment

  • 5 of 5

Just off the Spanish Steps and central to all the major attractions in Rome. The apartment is just as described and both the building and apartment are very well maintained. Our interaction with the owner, and people who met us, was great and we had no issues with anything. David provided a lot of information about the area and the apartment itself was well stocked from soap to laundry detergent. It also included an airport pick up so he could not make it any easier to enjoy.

We would absolutely look to stay here again when we return to Rome!

Perfect Location!

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is all you need for a cultural visit to Rome! Perfectly situated around the corner from the Spanish Steps, you are also just a short stroll to many of the other cultural highlights of Rome…including the Trevi Fountain, Piazza del Popolo & Basilica Santa Maria del Popolo, the Villa Medici, Villa Borghese, the Pantheon and the gorgeous via Margutta!

Although it is a longer walk, it is also not too far to the Colosseum and Roman Forum, Piazza Navona, Campo de’ Fiori and the little known Doria Pamphilj Gallery (which is relatively unknown and therefore there were no crowds!). The Vatican is a little further but that is an all-day adventure!

The apartment is extremely comfortable with great bathrooms, washing facilities and for a city apartment it was extremely quiet for those much-needed afternoon siestas! By far one of the best features for me, during the extreme heat of summer, were the powerful air conditioners!!

David, the host, makes certain that the apartment is well stocked with both welcome amenities and a great deal of information about the area. He also has terrific recommendations for local restaurants….these recommendations were perfect!

Fantastic location, clean, safe

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for five nights and really enjoyed our stay. It was very hot in Rome and the air conditioners worked very well. We were greeted by Michele who oriented us to the apartment and provided us with some food and beverage items to help us acclimate us to the area. The WiFi worked very well. The owners also provided a lot of information on Roman attractions. Further, there were many books in the apartment that provided useful information. We did have some difficulties drying our clothing in the washer/dryer, however the apartment was well equipped with detergents for the laundry and dishwasher. There is a Coop grocery store on an adjacent street. Also, there is a booking office for train travel a few doors down, in case you need to make a day-trip outside Rome via train. Highly recommended apartment. Excellent experience.

‘David’s Place’….the ONLY place to stay in Roma!

  • 5 of 5

After reading all of his 5 star reviews, I chose to book both of my stays in Rome at David’s…the first 9 days, then the last 6 days of my trip. I’m so glad I did. I could have easily stayed the entire 3 1/2 weeks that I spent in Italy at his place. His apartment is located in the very chic area of the Spanish Steps, right near the nicest shopping and restaurants. I always felt safe walking around very late at night. There’s a full-size grocery store right around the corner, and some of the best restaurants in Rome are within a few blocks.

The apartment is so quiet that one day we slept in until almost noon, by accident! I haven't done that since I was a teenager! The bedrooms face an alley where it’s so quiet you can almost hear a pin drop! David has provided everything….and I mean everything: plug adaptors, irons, notepads and pens, a sewing kit. His kitchen has everything you would need to cook anything. It’s especially nice to have a washer/dryer. There’s even a fully stocked bar in the living room….because a good martini is always nice to come home to after a long, hot day at the ruins.

The beds are so comfy and have the softest sheets, a zillion thread count, no doubt, and there are extra blankets, pillows and towels.

And have you ever heard of anyone providing a laptop computer and printer for guests to use? And even an iPad filled with apps for everything you’d want or need in Rome.

Of course, the best part of his concierge service is the luxurious car service which David includes as part of his package which picked us up at the airport and dropped us off at our front door!

I can’t recommend ‘David’s Place’ enough! The energy, the feeling, that can’t be quantified is truly special…in fact, when we were in Florence staying at another VRBO, I kept saying day-in and day-out: “I sure wish I was at ‘David’s Place’!” Staying at The Spanish Steps Apartment was one of the great highlights of my trip, and this trip was one of the great highlights of my life.

Thank you David. I can’t wait to return.
