Fully furnished cottage overlooks a beautiful spring fed four acre pond. Lakeside Cottage is brand new and has wood floors, farmhouse sink, silestone counters, central heat/air and a beautiful gas log stove for ambiance. Perfect for a family retreat or a romantic getaway. Located on our 250 acre working ranch, Pine Grove Cottage is tucked away on its own corner of the property. A sun room can double as a third bedroom as the daybed there can convert to two twin beds. An open family room/kitchen is perfect for family gatherings. Guests are free to roam the ranch property which includes several small lakes (four to seven acres in size) and large expanses of wooded acreage where wildlife and birds abound. Fishing on the lakes is available on a "catch and release" basis to ensure our fishing stays good for future guests. Lakes are stocked with bass, catfish and brim. Spring Lake has Hybrid Bass and nearby Oak Grove Lake has Florida Bass along with catfish and bream. Just 10 minutes to Los Pinos Ranch Vineyard Winery (Pittsburg) and Bella Stella Winery (Winnsboro).
Jim and Paula Archer own and operate Lone Star Cattle Company, a working 250 acre ranch in Northeast Texas. Jim is a recently retired Professor of Chemistry and Paula is a recently retired software sales leader for a major corporation. They moved to the ranch over 12 years ago. Jim remains active as a District Governor for Rotary International. He is also Chair of the local ambulance board. Paula raises Shorthorn show calves and breeding stock. She is on the Board of Directors for the Texas Shorthorn Association. Both enjoy sharing the relaxation and enjoyment of the ranch through the vacation rental program.
Paula & Jim Archer purchased this cottage in 1998
We love the beauty of the area and the wonderful community of small town friends and neighbors. We moved to East Texas more than 20 years ago. After living in 'town' (Pittsburg TX) for 10 years we bought the ranch and fixed up Pine Grove Cottage for our weekend getaway. We loved staying there so much we sold our home in the city and moved to Pine Grove Cottage while we began plans for a new home on another corner of the property. During this time we needed more room for family and friends so we added Spring House on still another corner of the ranch. In 2005 our home was completed and we moved out of Pine Grove Cottage. We decided to offer both Pine Grove and Spring House on VRBO at that time so others could share in the beauty and fun of the ranch. We were so pleased with the wonderful guests that visited, we have added a third VRBO guest apartment and a Bed & Breakfast to allow larger groups to stay. We often host extended families looking for a retreat, wedding parties and multiple families who want to come together to visit. Now we can accommodate all. Our return rate is very high so many of our guests have come to view the ranch as their own special place in the country...without all the hard work!
We love the peace and quiet, the wildlife and the wonderful neighbors and sense of community in rural East Texas.
The property is beautiful, the cottage is complete with everything you need and more, the cows have wonderful personalities, the stars are amazing and the lakes are embracing! You can not go wrong spending time here. There's so many things to do!
We have an annual couples' weekend and we are so happy to have picked this location. Very nice grounds and just far enough away from the city to feel like you are in your own world. We were happy that the kitchen was fully-equipped. They had lots of games to play and my husband and I enjoyed a long game of Uno when everyone else was napping. A few of the people got to go in the canoe around the lake and it was hilarious to watch because they didn't know what they were doing.
Also, Red the cat kept us safe and we love watching the cows and chickens.
This place was perfect. Paula and Jim, the owners, were so helpful and nice.
5 stars all- around.
We had a marvelous stay at Lakeside Cottage. We had breakfast for supper the first night with the fresh eggs we purchased from Paula and the biscuits and homemade preserves that were in the refrigerator when we arrived. It was a great way to start our stay. The next day we got the tour of the ranch and enjoyed hearing from Jim how he and Paula got started in ranching. We also drove to Pittsburg and Mount Pleasant to see a bit more of east Texas. We had a great meal at the Cactus Mexican Restaurant in Pittsburg and enjoyed our visit to the state park nearby. We only got to stay two nights so our trip was short, but was long on fun. We'll definitely return and hope to have more time to fish next time.
We stayed here for 3 nights in October. We enjoyed fishing, checking out the farm and just relaxing. The Archer's were wonderful!!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend getaway. Paula was fantastic to work with. The cabin and property are very nice and stocked with just about everything you might possibly need. We relaxed, fished, and had a ton of fun spending time with family. We will definitely be back.
We were 2 families that stayed at Jim and Paula's Lakeside cabin in late July.
CABIN: Around 2 hrs from the DFW area, this cabin is completely secluded and on the lake. It is very well kept with well manicured and maintained front and back lawns. Inside the cabin is very clean, and all basic amenities are provided. Attention to detail is in every corner, with a well stocked kitchen to high end toiletries in the bathroom.
VIEW/PROPERTY: Cabin sits on a beautiful private and secluded lake. It is absolutely beautiful sitting and walking around the property. Fishing is very convenient and nice. There are these beautiful white egret (birds) that come to the property every day, and the entire landscape is pristine.
THE HOSTS: Probably one of the best parts of the cabin (and not to take away from how amazing the cabin and it's surroundings are)! Jim and Paula are genuinely extremely nice hosts. They called to make sure when we arrived that everything was good. Jim offered to take us around a tour of their ranch/property and we had a great time hearing about him and Paula, the property, and seeing a working ranch. They even left a bottle of home made jelly in the fridge! And if you want, for a small charge, they can leave you a dozen of farm fresh eggs.
OVERALL: Do not think twice about this place, everything about it is wonderful (and I travel a lot domestically and globally). I only wish they also had a 3 bed / 3 bath cabin along with this one for slightly larger groups to go!
