Cornerstone is a comfortable house for a holiday with family or friends. It has two queen bedrooms and another bedroom with bunks, a single and a trundle. There is a bathroom with tub and a shower cubicle in the laundry room. There is one toilet which is off the laundry/shower room.
We provide doonas and pillows and you have the choice of bringing your own linen or having us provide doona covers, sheets and towels for an extra charge.
The main feature is its privacy. After leaving the beaten track and taking some unmade roads you will travel up a 500m drive way through dense ti-tree. There you will be surprised to find a pretty garden and comfortable house.
Click on the Satellite option on the map of Cornerstone and you will see the Winkarlin bush island and how it connects to the Coastal Reserve. Vistors are welcome to explore over 50 acres of bush around the Cornerstone house and we can suggest interesting directions to try. Our goal is to preserve this whole bush area in perpetuity and by staying at Cornerstone you are helping us make this vision financially viable!
Even the locals are surprised to find the loveliness and emptiness of Winkarlin Beach. It is only metres from Cornerstone's driveway to the entrance to the beach which is good for swimming at high tide and wonderful for exploring at all times.
For fishing enthusiasts you can try you luck off the 'flat rock' on Winkarlin Beach at low tide or walk along the beach to the seawall for high tide fishing.
If you want to surf or boogie board, drive for only 20 minutes and you reach Waratah Bay or the patrolled surf beach at Sandy Point.
Over 100 different species have been identified in and around Cornerstone. For example, there are flocks of Blue-winged parrots breeding there. We are always hoping to spot one with an orange belly! Most days you will see wallabies on the driveway and we regularly see wombats, blue-tongues and echidnas. Corner Inlet is a marine park and the bird life is stunning!
Of course in the warmer months you will probably see snakes. Just keep your distance and they will slither away! Mosquitoes and sandflies can also be pesky at some times of year.
We try and keep spiders out of the house but you may meet our resident Huntsman spider. He tends to only appear at night so he is not there when we are cleaning. Plus, despite his appearance, he is helping keep the other flies and bugs in the house under control so please just ignore him - he will not hurt you.
If you hear the patter of feet on the roof in the night please do not be alarmed they are probably only possums and other native creatures.
One less than perfect thing about Cornerstone is the flyscreens on the windows and doors. These screens are showing their age and have some rips and tears. We have fixed them but it is difficult to make them better as the frames are an old design. Our plan is to replace all the windows and doors as soon as we can find a suitable builder who is prepared to come out into the bush for this relatively small job!

Cozy and private
Enjoyed our stay very much. Very comfy and well maintained
great comfort in idyllic coastal/bush seclusion
wonderful getaway location with a true bush and coast immersion which is largely your own to explore and absorb
Great location in great area of Victoria
Had a great stay - the family loved the birds, the beaches and the solitude. Place has great opportunity - a few repairs to the fly-screens on the deck, a little cleaning up and some minor landscaping, and it would be near perfect. Wonderful for kids - we had night walks and saw possums, roasted marshmallows and spent three nights there without the kids thinking once about their ipads. Looking forward to staying again!
Good size accommodation ...however no aircon on hot summer days is uncomfortable with a baby. Surrounded by bushland so kids can't be outside freely. About 10 mins drive from main roads and the beach that you can walk to is not really a sandy beach. Ok overall but not the best location.
Hi melissa Very sorry you did not enjoy your stay at Cornerstone. You are right, it is surrounded by native bush and is k's down dirt roads and the beach is sandy but reached via an intertidal zone which is definitely muddy! I would suggest that next time you rent in Sandy Point, there are lots of houses there with more mod-cons than Cornerstone and you will be among people and with access to a great surf beach with lifeguards. I hope your honest and accurate review will help us attract the people who will be happy with more remoteness, more birdlife and a location on Corner Inlet.
Cornerstone was exactly what we were looking for to escape the city. Private, quiet but only a short drive to Wilson's Prom. Winkarlin beach was a great shallow spot for the kids to splash around in and discover some of the local marine life. The house itself is spacious and well kept. We will be visiting again.
