We've rented this condo for an extended period for the last two summers. It's perfect! You wake go to sleep to the sounds of Pacific waves. The balcony and master bedroom offer beautiful views of the lagoon. The front view provides Pu'u O'o vent, Mauna Loa, and Mauna Kea. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking, there are coolers, chairs, towels, and swim gear for the beach, and there's a bus stop right in front of the condo if you opt to not rent a car. The protected lagoon offers safe swimming and snorkeling with turtle sightings at lower tides.
This condo is in a great location: close to the airport, a short drive to downtown Hilo, and adjacent to a lovely beach park. The building is older, but the unit is very well maintained and amazingly well equipped. Others have listed all that is there - and we used it all! The dogs mentioned by others were not a problem - we only heard them once or twice when we were in the parking lot. The view from the balcony and bedroom is spectacular; we so enjoyed hearing the sounds of the surf, the frogs at night and the birds in the morning. The bed is very comfortable (we only used the back bedroom). The owner responds promptly to emails. The wifi is a bit spotty, and the laundry facility is down the hall, but overall this deserves its 5 star rating.
We really didn't know what to expect since we had never been to Hilo. We always try to find beach front, with to-die-for view but couldn't find anything that seemed to match those criteria. So we picked what we thought was the best available for our dates.
But after being there fore just over a week we have decided we picked the best. Hilo isn't like the other Hawaiian towns we've stayed in - and we've hit most of them. There aren't any big resorts and nothing has been built for quite a few years. But after a few days, we decided that is part of the charm - is ISN'T like most of the rest of the towns. It is old Hawaii, laid back, small, no chain restaurants.
The weather could have been better - we never got to do the helicopter flight over the volcano - but that was ok since Pele had decided to relax for awhile and nothing much is going on. In between rain squalls we visited the local parks, which are beautiful and well attended. The coastline is very beautiful with lots of little coves and turtles.
The condo is older and smallish but comfortable and well-equipped. The master bed is very comfortable (we didn't use the other) and the deck is great with wonderful views. I've never seen mirrors used so effectively to enhance small spaces! Without them we might have felt cramped but it all seemed much larger than it really is. The good binoculars were a very nice treat and one we have never found offered in much more expensive condos. All in all we felt Terry honestly cared about his guests.
I agree with the comments about the dogs across the street but Terry has no control there. And we didn't hear them once we went to bed and the sound of the surf cancelled them out. We loved the restaurant across the street - the food was good and the waitress we had (Beth) was lovely and friendly. Ask for her!
We arrived to a clean and well-stocked condo. It's not the Ritz, folks, but it was clean, comfortable, well-stocked, and in a perfect location. We enjoyed the view and seeing whales from the lanai with the binoculars provided. The location was convenient to our planned activities, yet away from any noisy town traffic. Our favorite part was snorkeling next door with the turtles. We went just before sunset and there were about 30 turtles in the lagoon. We hiked around volcanoes national park, and enjoyed the fresh produce and the lilikoi butters at the farmers market. But, the most amazing day was at Imiloa planetarium. We went for an hour show and none of us was ready to leave after 4 hours, including our four year old. We have been to planetaria in Los Angeles and Chicago, but prefer this one. Our presenter, Cam, also works at Mauna Kea on the telescopes. He was very informative as well as patient and inspiring for our child. The food at Imiloa was the best we tasted of any restaurant in Hilo.
This condo was a great place to stay and we will definitely try to stay in this unit again.
We had a wonderful time. Terry is very responsive and has thought of the details, so the condo is very well equipped for cooking. There are masks, flippers, really great binoculars, guidebooks, beach towels and so on. We stayed a week and are counting on returning soon.
The only shortcoming is out of the owner's hands: across the street are two dogs who bark for much of the day. They are quiet at night but start up early in the morning. Not too much of a problem if you are in the bedroom facing the ocean, but a drag if you are in the bedroom facing the street and the house across the way. But if you get out and explore the Big Island you won't have to hear them much.
This was our third time to stay in this condo, and we WILL be back. Condo is well furnished, very well equipped, and the views are spectacular! We stayed for two weeks and were able to visit all the local tourist places and still have time to enjoy a nightly mai tai on the lanai. Kitchen has everything you could possibly need to cook a full meal, if you are so inclined, but there are a number of good restaurants, for eat in or take out. And the Hilo Farmers' Market has the best local produce you could ask for...
