Regarding the satellite internet service supplied by Starband.net, this is adequate for checking emails, reading news, weather reports and basic internet browsing as the system has limited bandwidth and a usage cap similar to many cell phones. In summary it is not adequate to download videos or upload large files and not good for services such as Skype and Google phone.
Maria is an incredibly gracious host who makes an extra effort to ensure that you can make the most of the Hana region. Her bungalow is located just 30 minutes from the tiny town of Hana in a district called Nahiko. It is quiet, scenic and smack dab in the middle of the rain forest. This bungalow is perfect for couples who plan to cook their own dinner because all the kitchen implements and gadgets you might need to cook a gourmet meal are provided, and there is a wonderful screened-in separate dining room, complete with battery-operated candles for ambience. Maria will acquaint you with all that the region has to offer, and she will tell you about the best sights to see and the best places to park. Her information is more up-to-date than the guidebooks that we purchased, and she provided a printed itinerary with additional handwritten notes on a good map.
We think the best way to experience Hana is to stock up on provisions at the big stores near the airport (Costco, Target, Safeway etc), put the perishables on ice in a styrofoam cooler, then take your time driving to Maria's place, stopping to frolic along the way. The drive takes about 1.5 hours nonstop, or 2.5 hours if you frolic. For fresh produce and fresh fish, we recommend stopping at the Mana Foods in Paia (a health food store and fresh grocery shop which is basically the last place to shop before you embark on the Hana Highway). Mana Foods has excellent fish and meat, better than the big stores near the airport.
Arrive at 4:30, and settle into the comfy cottage for an early dinner. Next morning, get up early and go to Hana. You'll beat the crowds and you can enjoy the famous black sand beach and Oleo Gulch hikes before the hordes of tourists descend: the bus tours begin to arrive around 10 AM, so you'll want to hit the black sand beach before then and be on your way to O'Leo. You can stop at the beach or the arboretum on the way back, and when you see the lines of cars driving south to the National Park, you'll understand why you were glad to get an early start.
There is more to do in Hana than you can squeeze into two days, even if you are fit. There are excellent hikes, several different beaches, and lots of places to explore. On Friday and Saturday night, Hana Farms has a fun pizza night using their stone ovens. Other than that, there are very few dinner options, so plan on cooking up a storm at home.
This is the second time we have stayed here and we love it! Maria makes you feel at home and it is a very inviting place. Clean, comfortable, and cozy. Maria also gives you tips on local eateries and places to explore. Next time we are in that area we are definitely going to stay there again!
This is pristine. The place is clean and well-stocked, the property is lush and meticulously cared for. Maria is helpful and knows this area like few others, so ask her anything. The locals all know her and posit she may be the only renter in Nihuku! You're experiencing something rare, away from the tourists yet 20min to the Black Sand Beach and lava tubes. Her place is ten minutes off the highway if you drive slowly, so it's quiet and remote. Glowing jewel tones out every window including the ocean view from almost every vantage point. The gazebo is amazing. I only wish I'd gone with someone to appreciate the entirety of what this rental offers. I went alone yet felt safe and singularly pampered. For the price, this is the best lodging I've found in the US.
Maria was a wonderful hostess, provided us with a detailed orientation, provided guidance and information about what to do on the way to, in and around Hana.
The cottage was clean and organized with everything we needed for a 4 night stay.
This cottage was amazing and exceeded our expectations. Maria was an amazing host, giving us great local recommendations of places to see and where to eat. The cottage was very clean and the bed was so comfortable. Our only regret was not staying longer than two nights. A great place to explore the Road to Hana and get away from it all on Maui!
2 of us spent 2 days at this great, super-clean cottage. It had everything that we could have wanted and more! I would not hesitate to stay here again or recommend it to anyone else visiting Hana.
