Overview

About the property

Barkala Farm/Pilliga Pottery is The Jewel of the Pilliga, nestled in a beautiful valley between the vast forests of the Pilliga and the foothills of the Warrumbungle Range, in northwestern NSW.

This is a truly special place you will never forget. Established by a German family 30 years ago, staying in this secluded valley is like stepping into another world, with its fabulous European-inspired eco-architecture, the energetic and wonderfully creative atmosphere of Pilliga Pottery, and gorgeous natural surrounds of farmland, bushland, craggy ridges and living forest. The organic shapes and colours of the amazing buildings arise from extensive native gardens teeming with birds, with little vistas, hideaways, and unexpected highlights wherever you look.

We have five guesthouses on site, each one hand-built using local materials, an eye for beauty and a desire to create a home away from home. Our hope is that everyone who stays with us will leave invigorated and inspired, brimming with ideas and with full hearts.

Each house is pet-friendly and most are self-contained and self-catering, but we are more than happy to provide home-cooked meals for you, from traditional German fare to delicious wood-fired pizza, just ask us! Groups are welcome.

Our guests are welcome to enjoy the large swimming pool as much as they want!

The Old Schoolhouse

Experience the enchanting atmosphere of this octagonal "fairy tale castle", handcrafted from local timbers. Relax and enjoy the beautiful views from the large, Swiss-style balcony, and take a shower in a hand-sculpted masterpiece! Originally built as a creative place for our kids to do their correspondence lessons, The Old Schoolhouse has been fully renovated with artistic touches everywhere to suit its unique charm. It sleeps 6 people and is self-contained, with a kitchenette, a shower and toilet, and a BBQ downstairs for guests to use. We have recently installed air-conditioning for your comfort. Pets are welcome.

$140 per couple per night plus $25 for each extra person per night.

The Poets Cottage

Tucked away behind our orchard, with a private drive-in access at the rear, The Poets Cottage is the ideal place for a quiet and inspiring retreat. This cosy yet spacious mud brick cottage breathes an atmosphere of yesteryear. Sleep in with birdsong around you, spend the evening reading by your own woodfire, stargaze through a skylight above your bed! The Poets Cottage sleeps 6 and is self-contained, with a full country kitchen, a roomy bathroom, a campfire area out the back, and a BBQ on the front verandah. Pets are welcome. There is a fully-fenced verandah as well as a fenced dog-run.

$140 per couple per night plus $25 for each extra person per night.

The Studio

The Studio was once the original hand-throwing workshop at Pilliga Pottery, one of the first mudbrick structures we made. After many extensions and a full renovation, it is now a perfect base for large families or groups. The Studio is a spacious, friendly and relaxing place to stay, directly adjacent to Pilliga Pottery and all its action, but set in its own garden for privacy. With its own recreation room (featuring a ping pong table), a reading nook, a wood-burning heater, and three lovely rounded mud brick bedrooms filled with handmade beds, it has something for everyone. The Studio sleeps 15 and is self-contained, with a full kitchen, a bathroom and a second toilet. Pets are welcome.

$140 per couple per night plus $25 per extra person per night.

The Eagle Valley

Situated 2 km from the main homestead Eagle Valley offers total seclusion and a ‘dream escape holiday’ from any hustle and bustle. This very spacious house is made with the use of straw bale, sandstone, natural rock-walls and local timber to create an absolute piece of art. It has 3 large bedrooms with hand-made beds and sleeps up to 14 people. It also has a fully-equipped kitchen, a wood-stove (wood supplied) and a cosy lounge room for relaxing. The private location in your own valley and the entire atmosphere of the building will carry you instantly into another world of total relaxation !!

$140 per couple per night plus $25 per extra person per night.

The Farmhouse

This unique, European-style building offers a high quality budget accommodation with shared amenities. Four spacious family rooms with a huge verandah with views over the paddocks and hills. Each room (rented separately) has a television and all the beds/furniture in the rooms are hand-built from local timbers. There are two toilets and a shared bathroom situated on the open verandah. The verandah is a lovely place to relax and take in the rural view. There is also a refrigerator and tea/coffee making facilities for your convenience. Guests can either bring their own food and enjoy it on the verandah or anywhere along one of the walking tracks. Or be welcome in our Blue Wren Cafe, where we serve a nice variety of meals and refreshments.

$85 per couple (per room) plus $20 per extra person per night.

A quiet spot

  • 3 of 5

I thought I was booking a more secluded cabin (turned out it was in a sort of compoundwith people wandering about everywhere) even so it was charmingreat in a rustic kind of way and the staff were lovely.

Amazing property

  • 5 of 5

***Accomodation

We stayed in the "schoolhouse" and it had plenty of German rustic charm and character. Our children called it "Repunzels House". The architecture is amazing and you can really feel its German heritage. The gas heater was our saviour on cold nights while the croaking frogs lulled us to sleep.

***Cafe

The food in the cafe was delicious. Fresh cooked and delightful. Kids loved the woodfire pizza. The chicken schnitzel is incredible and the omlette for breakfast is a must!

***Service

We happened to totally forget the suitcase that contained our kids clothes. All 5 nights worth! Regina surprised us with a stack of clothes pointed us to where we could get some to tide is over. She was so helpful and we'll never forget that. We did horse riding and pottery classes with a wonderful... i believe her name was Katie. She was so awesome and patient and she connected with the kids really well! All the volunteer staff/travellers there, greet you with a smile and are always open to helping you.

***Farm

We took a few walks and met the guinea pigs, chickens and talkative turkey. We watched the cows get milked and also got to taste some farm fresh milk. The horses there were really friendly and the magpies aren't shy to let you know their babies are nearby. Its a well set out farm with a great vibe.

Exactly what we hoped for

  • 5 of 5

Poet's cottage was idyllic and the wood heater made it extremely cosy. Lovely walks, bird life and incredible night skies. The cafe served lovely food and it was a nice change to be close to nature and all the farm animals.
