About Lynne Nielsen

We love to be on the beach with our kids, friends, and grandchildren! We sail, too, and have anchored our boat in the bay out front.

Summer crabbing has been abundant most summers. THE best Dungeness Crab!!! Such feasts! And eating freshly caught salmon is superb. My husband, Steve, and I have raised our family in this part of the Northwest, exploring and going on adventures on land and by boat. We enjoy sharing the beauty of this property with others and we love our times here by ourselves, too...the quiet, the water, the birds, the rhythms of the wind and water. Come see!

Lynne Nielsen purchased this house in 2006

Why Lynne Nielsen chose Puget Sound

We bought our place in 2006 because of its location, right at the entrance to beautiful Hood Canal in Puget Sound, with beaches to walk for miles, and kayaking and boating right from the saltwater beach, and a 270ft private pier. There are several buildings on the property---Heron House is the larger of two rental dwellings (the Kingfisher is smaller yet has access to the same beaches and boats)---and the view to the west with the snow-capped mountains, the birds soaring, the sunsets...well, these things are good food-for-the-soul for us. We do not take any of this beauty for granted, for sure. You'll see for yourself when you come for a stay.

What makes this house unique

Our family has 'eyes for agates!' Grandpa taught us all how to see them among the other rocks, especially when the sun is at a slant, and the agates just glow as you scan the beach at your feet. And we have sand dollars galore! The 270 ft private pier affords us many hours of fun, fishing and crabbing (in season) and watching the jelly fish travel on their way. Having the pier, and being on the beach, are unique features that we enjoy out here. The neighbors are friendly and respectful. Oh, and sometimes at night you can hear a mama seal with her pup out on our float in the spring. Amazing!

And if you want city-life, there are towns nearby for touring and shopping and eating and movies.

Come on out and see for yourselves!

We'll have the house sparkling clean and ready for you! :)

Too beautiful to leave!

  • 5 of 5

I can only echo Elizabeth L's review, because we are the parents who came to Heron House to celebrate my husband's 85th birthday. To add my observations, I will say that Lynn and Steve have furnished a home in such impeccable good taste, with only the nicest quality of everything, especially in the kitchen and bathrooms. It's the sort of home you'd want to own just as is...just walk in and start living there. Even the books reflect the taste of the owners, and everything has been provided for the visitors' comfort and pleasure. Lynn dropped by to make sure we could find everything and provided the only thing we needed....a card table....within an hour. I particularly appreciated the safety features of the first floor bathroom; the entire first floor was accessible and comfortable. I can't say enough for the whole environment there, and the hosts are simply the best! We'd love to come back to Heron House in crab season.

Wonderful celebration weekend

  • 5 of 5

My sibs and parents came to Heron House to celebrate my dad's 85th birthday. It was perfect for our needs. The house and property are even more beautiful than they look in the photos. The first floor of the house and the dock were easily accessible for people who can't manage stairs, and the second floor loft provided plenty of comfortable sleeping space for the four siblings. Highlights of the property: expansive westerly views, sunsets, access to the beach, use of the pier, kayaks, abundant bird life, tidepooling, etc. Highlights of the house: lovely décor, very comfortable beds with high-quality bedding, large, well-stocked kitchen, wood-burning stove for those chilly nights. I hated to leave, and would love to come back. They also have a second smaller cottage that is sometimes available for rent -- I didn't get to see inside it but it enjoys the same beautiful view, beach access, and view of the dock.

Owens Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We never wrote our review of our stay last year so thought we would finally take the time to write one. This place was amazing! We had a great time. Myself, my wife Vickie, her daughter Kami and her daughter Madie and friend and their new baby all stayed for a week. The kids had a great time looking for shells and even getting wet. We cooked our own meals and ate like kings. We even enjoyed the fire pit. The weather was perfect. Can't wait to go back. We're hoping we can this September. Eric & Vickie Owens

I can't ever thank Lynne enough, it could not have been a better place to be...

  • 5 of 5

I chose Heron house because I wanted bring my 92 yr old Mom to Hansville, where I had once lived just down the beach a ways, with same view etc. I was so glad to find the house on Twin Spits because I knew exactly the view i wanted my Mom to enjoy.... across the Hood Canal to the Olympic Mountains and the view of the beautiful sunsets ( houses up by main town face into Strait and don't have the same view.. pretty but not wondrous like at twin spits).

Through planning and arriving Lynne was the beacon in the lighthouse and upon meeting her, her nature was just as welcoming. We were so happy to find a house with wheel chair access.. and beautiful views, and she helped in many ways to make the accommodations accessible to my Mom. We were so lucky that due to some delays in returning home we were able to stay a few days extra ( we had to move to Kingfisher house , but that was just as suitable). We cooked , we ate, we enjoyed the decks, we enjoyed the area, and Moms caregiver and I had lots of fun coming the beach. We celebrated my Mom's 93rd Bday there, and two days later she was ( i was) lucky enough to spend her last moments there in such a wondrous spot watching another incredible sunset. Her passing was unexpected, and I was unprepared, but I was lucky to have Lynne there next door, who appeared by my side immediately ( and her husband too) and consoled me and supported me at a moment of great grief, with thoughtfulness, calm, and understanding. What a treasure Lynne was to have by me, and what a treasured place Twin Spits Heron house will always be to me. I can never thank her enough. All who knew my Mom said how lucky she was to have been in such an incredibly beautiful spot.. she loved to travel and enjoy beautiful vistas, and we traveled to many locals together, we were so lucky to have this beautiful place. Tonight I just sent a request to have the house for a family retreat for this coming summer / anniversary, so that my siblings can also enjoy this beautiful home and hostess. Thank you so much Lynne, I hope this review does not seem inappropriate, you know I believe we were there at that time as a destiny... a perfect place. Can't wait to be there again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your generous words of thanks, Laura. It was an unexpected honor to meet your delightful mother and to celebrate her 92nd birthday! She certainly lived a full life and was indeed loved well by her family. I hope your family will return to Twin Spits for the anniversary, and enjoy some beach time together. It has been quite a wild winter with giant tides this year! It will be fun to explore the newly sculpted beaches. Thanks again, Lynne

Crabbing and fishing from dawn to dusk!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the Heron House (family of four, kids aged 13 and 10) was absolutely phenomenal! My husband and I thought the kids (and he) would really enjoy fishing and crabbing off the pier, but what we didn't expect was that within 15 minutes of our arrival, both kids would be down on the pier with hooks in the water, not to be heard from for hours. We ate seafood every night! At the same time, we could keep an eye on them from the house because of the big windows facing the water. This is pretty-much how we spent our four-day vacation in Hansville, except for one gloriously stormy afternoon when we drove into town for groceries and burgers. It was incredibly relaxing for all four of us - a wonderful chance to really rest, catch up on reading, and spend time together outdoors and away from computers and televisions.

Our hosts, Lynn and Steve, were also just wonderful. They managed the perfect balance of being friendly and accessible, and allowing us plenty of privacy and space to do our own thing. The house itself was clean and carefully maintained, with just about everything we could possibly need except for groceries. It isn't a large house, but we found it to be the perfect size and configuration. It is cozy without feeling small; it has a good-sized central communal space (kitchen/living room area) with lots of lights and views, plus a private master suite with a very nice, updated bathroom, and an upstairs loft with plenty of room, beds and a sofa for kid lounging.

We loved it!! We hope to come back again in the future. It was one of our best family vacations ever.

Our children and grandchildren are coming for the Labor Day Holiday, and I anticipate much fun and beach time and fishing from the pier, as well. We have such an amazing beach to walk for miles, to find shells and agates, take photographs as you watch the entertaining antics of birds and seals and waves making extraordinary patterns and sounds. Our house is comfortable, well-appointed for your relaxation! Plan for some Family Time or a time-for-two. Or a Girlfriends' Getaway! Or invite some fishin' buddies to hang out with you...and conveniently moor your boat on the float at the end of our private pier. This area has many other points of interest, too.

From here you can explore Nordic-style Poulsbo with restaurants, antiquing, shopping, galleries and museums. And the Olympic Peninsula offers sights for day trips, like the Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend, the Lavender Festival in Sequim, taking a day trip to the ocean, or hiking our local Hansville Trail System and more. Museums, golfing, nearby casinos, and the quaint Port Gamble General Store serves particularly great breakfasts (25-min.drive). Point No Point Lighthouse tour. Kingston Farmers' Market on Saturdays. Or simply stay put and RELAX! The eagles and ospreys put on quite a show in all kinds of weather!

Point No Point Casino offers headliner-entertainment, and a variety of eating spots--good food. The casino is about 10 minutes from our door, and makes for some fun times with friends, when you are not beach combing or napping or reading just one more chapter of that good book! Our kitchen has EVERYthing you might need for cooking up a storm. Sometimes it is fun to put in a pan of brownies, or get a picnic ready for down by the fire pit. And the stars at night are amazing!
