Lyrebird Ridge Organic Winery - Kookaburra Cottage

Bedrooms Studio
Space 538 sq. ft.
Property type studio

About the property

We own a small organic winery situated on 40 acres of bushland only 20 minutes from Kangaroo Valley , 25 minutes to Berry and 20 minutes from Nowra. There are natural gullies, bush and paddocks alongside the vineyard which makes for many lovely tranquil spots to relax or explore. You can wander around the property and the vineyard, feed the chickens, collect the eggs and throw in a yabbie pot in the warmer months and see what you catch. This is a quiet setting with the options to sleep in, read a good book, take a bush walk or head off to the wonderful places to see around the Shoalhaven area. Our accommodation offers the opportunity to escape technology for a while with no phones, internet or TV in the rooms.

There is a large grassy BBQ area close by your room so you can enjoy your evening meal with a glass of wine or port without leaving the property. We are a family friendly property with many interesting things for your children to see and do. If the grapes are on, watching the children's faces as they pick their own bunch from the vines, is priceless. No Grapes, then we have chickens, sheep and ducks to enjoy. Our two dogs are very social and love to play and interact with guests. This is your chance to escape the suburbs, technology and enjoy a rural setting not too far from the city.We include breakfast provisions for your stay however , if you would like to include some extras, we can organise an organic breakfast basket, BBQ and Salad packs , Devonshire Teas and Cheese Platters. Make use of our picnic basket and throw rugs to find a special spot to enjoy a meal on the property or at one of the many places we are happy to recommend .

We are only a 30 minute drive to the beaches of Gerringong and Shoalhaven Heads or you can visit the fantastic Fleet Air Arm Museum at HMAS Albatross, go to Hanging Rock lookout or visit Shoalhaven Zoo. We are also very close to Arthur Boyd's Bundanon Estate where you can tour the art studio or time your visit to coincide with one of the fantastic events held there regularly through the year.

Self contained cabin ( Studio)

We have two self contained cabins close to the vineyard and cellar door on our beautiful rural property. This listing is for " Kookaburra Cottage #1" and is a studio style accommodation featuring a wood fire heater, queen size bed and a double sofa bed.

If you would prefer our other room which consists of a queen size bed and two single bunk beds, please go to our other listing ( property 4831150 Kookaburra Cottage#2)to make your booking.

A continental breakfast is included for your stay and includes fresh eggs from our resident chooks. You can sleep in, enjoy making your own breakfast in your cottage or use the BBQ at your leisure.

You can pick herbs from the old bathtub garden and whip up your own omelette. The room has everything you need to prepare your own meals along with tea, coffee, juice and your basic pantry items. Cooler nights you can enjoy your own wood fire heater, making your cabin warm and cosy or you can use the fire pit near the cellar door and toast marshmallows. If you really enjoy the fun aspects of camping ( but happy to not have a tent) then make use of the camp oven and waffle irons and be surprised by the incredible night sky.

Cellar door

The cellar door is open by appointment and in the summer those staying with us can enjoy the cool inground cellar to taste our organic wines and port. In Winter, the pot belly stove is perfect to warm up around. A selection of my favourite local products are available along a small range of relishes and chutneys made here with our homegrown summer produce.

About Anne & Greg Edmistone

My husband Greg and I bought Lyrebird Ridge when our two children became teenagers. We moved to the Shoalhaven in 1990 when Greg was posted to the Navy base, HMAS Albatross.I have worked in the area as a primary school teacher for many years but recently took a break from teaching so I could enjoy working on projects around the farm and vineyard.

Anne & Greg Edmistone purchased this studio in 2005

Why Anne & Greg Edmistone chose Kangaroo Valley

From the first time we came to this property we felt at home. We loved the feeling of isolation, even though it is so close to Kangaroo Valley and Nowra and we were attracted by the simplicity and self- sufficiency of the place - tank water, solar power, vineyard, chickens. We were happy to be challenged by a change in lifestyle for both us and the children.

What makes this studio unique

Sharing our place with guests is wonderful because there are so many interesting things to see and do. There is always various wildlife coming and going, things to learn, to make and grow and jobs to tackle. I love having people join in if they want but if you just want to kick back and relax then I will just point you in the direction of the hammock and leave you to it.

We hope when people stay with us they feel welcome, relaxed and comfortable. We also hope that the ability to step away from phones, TV, internet or just the radio for a few days helps them to reconnect with nature and with each other. What we first loved about the place is what we always keep in mind ' Keep it simple'.

Amazing hospitality and location!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the farm, animals and our room! The room was ample space for a family of four and was well equipped. The hosts were incredibly accommodating and gave extra time to show the kids around the farm and introduce them to the animals. Kids already want to go back!

Idyllic country holiday

  • 5 of 5

Everything was perfect for a peaceful, relaxing weekend away! Accommodation was excellent, fully self contained, wood burner stove, breakfast and cooking materials provided, comfortable bed, board games, great DVD selection, toiletries, and really nice finishing touches like some crackers, cheese and homemade chutney and a little glass of port when we arrived! The location is also excellent, isolated and peaceful, yet only 15/20 min drive to a town! Complete freedom on the property, for us and our dog! Lots of farm animals and 2 lovely dogs who were very friendly! We also saw 5 wombats, which was a treat! Ann and Greg were very welcoming! Would thouroghly recommend! Loved our stay here!

Owner's Response: Hello Joanna Thanks for taking the time to review your stay with us.The October long weekend is such a busy time around the Shoalhaven so I am glad you appreciated being tucked away on our property. The wombat population seems to be growing and we have even chatted about changing our name to "The Wombat Burrows" so I am not surprised you spotted 5 of the fat little guys. We hope to see you and your beautiful dog back again soon. Regards Anne

Feels like coming home

  • 5 of 5

Anne and Greg are wonderful hosts. This little farm and winery feels instantly like a home away from home. Our dogs loved playing on the farm with all kinds of animals (dogs, sheep, cows, chickens, ducks, wombats and wallabies!) and it's only a short drive to the beach, beautiful Berry and a range of gorgeous vineyards. We will definitely be back to unplug, unwind and enjoy what Australia's natural environment has to offer. If you've got little ones on two legs or four the farm is full of interesting sights, sounds and smells and there's plenty to do if you want to explore. We will definitely be returning!

Beautiful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent the weekend at this retreat and it is absolutely marvellous for a family with young children. Our boys feed the ducks, chickens and collected the freshly laid eggs, which were enjoyed for breakfast the next morning. The fire place in the cabin kept us warm and cosy. No internet or mobile service meant it was great quality family time. We will definitely be returning to Lyrebird Ridge Winery !!!

Lovely property, welcoming host

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely part of the world. Our family of 3 plus our dog stayed in the smaller of the two rooms, which are situated in a separate cottage, not far from the main house. The room was comfortable, well appointed and clean, with some basic provisions such as bread, milk, eggs, tea and coffee provided. The bathroom is a little dated, but everything works perfectly well and the water was nice and hot. Anne was a welcoming host, and our son really appreciated having the opportunity to feed the chickens and have all his questions answered (!).

It was an easy drive to Berry and onto the coast, while so lovely to return to, to cosy up to the fire and huddle in bed to watch a DVD.

The only frustration was the lack of phone and internet reception, although it was probably a blessing in disguise.

Owner's Response: Hello Aphra Thanks so much for your thoughtful review of our accommodation. I was pleased to have you say everything was clean, well appointed and comfortable. The lack of connection with technology is something we try to make everyone aware of before they book but like you say it's actually " a blessing " that most of our guests are seeking and needing. We hope to see you come back and stay again soon. regards Anne
