a recent guest said"We stayed at Pua Hale in April, and it was wonderful in every way. The home is just as described and shown in the photos – it has such a peaceful ambiance. We loved the Japanese style and accents. Carol Ann has supplied everything you need for the beach, and that was great. The house is in a quiet, residential area and is close to shopping, many good restaurants (including those at the nearby resorts), and Poipu Beach is just minutes away. The house has complete privacy with beautiful gardens surrounding it. It was nice too knowing there was someone nearby in the event of an emergency. A great find for us – I highly recommend Pua Hale!!"

On a sunny Poipu morning, you will wake up to the sound of a small Japanese waterfall in your completely enclosed, walled garden filled with tropical flowers (Anthurium, heleconia. spathphyllum and others).

Your bedroom has sliding shoji doors and a very comfortable, queen bed. It opens into a large living room with queen sized sofa bed, and a dining area. You can see the lovely walled garden from the bedroom and hear the soft waterfall sound (you may turn it off if you do not like the sound of falling water) You will enjoy the large sunken Japanese style bathtub/shower, big enough for two. The kitchen is completely equipped right down to the finest garlic press and food processor. There is a cable TV, free WIFI VCR, DVD, stereo with tape & CD player, and numerous books on Hawaiiana and Kauai.

The white interior walls, white tiled floors and counter tops along with insulated double ceilings keep Pua Hale cool all year round. Beach chairs, boogie boards, coolers and both a gas and charcole barbecue are available for your use. Pua Hale is on a half acre property. The owners live in the back of the property and their home is not visible once you are in Pua Hale's walled garden or house.

The owner, Carol Ann has lived at Poipu Beach for over 53 years. Carol Ann was born in Hawaii (her family came in the 1800s).. She has traveled extensively all over the world. She has three grown children and 10 grandchildren, 3 dogs and 2 cats who live in the house on the back of the property and can not be seen or heard from Pua Hale..

Carol Ann is a painter and photographer and retired from her photography company called PORTRAITS OF HAWAII. She has won many local & national awards for her photography and painting and has been published in several books.

Another guest just commented:

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at Pua Hale. It is a little hidden jem in Poipu. The small house is surrounded by a wooden fence, lush greens, and has a lovely fountain in the private garden. It really makes you feel like you are in your own little paradise. The shower was also great - it has this open design that makes you feel like you are showering outdoors. So freeing! The house was clean and had everything we needed. It's close to the beach and some great restaurants and other resorts where you can go grab a nice cocktail. I stay in vacation rentals all the time and would highly recommend this!

Why Carol Ann Davis chose Kauai

My husband, Walter Briant,(who passed away 8 years ago) and I built this home as a very special vacation rental at Poipu Beach. It was built in a Japanese style and is furnished with japanese antique tansus. We built it on our 1/2 acre property at the Poipu Beach resort area but it is on a dead end street so is quiet though very near to all resort amenities.

What makes this cottage unique

Pua Hale is a unique one of a kind vacation rental in Poipu. the house itself is beautifully designed and It is uniquly furnished with Japanese antique furniture and garden sculpture as well as modern comfortable furniture. Though near the resort area, it is on a very quiet dead end street and surrounded by a high wall and is totally private. It is a short 5 minute walk (if you walk slowly) from Poipu Beach park itself where people enjoy swimming at Poipu Beach, rated as one of the best beaches in the world. The kitchen is totally outfitted with anything you will need to cook a gourmet meal and there is a complete laundry room attached to the back of Pua Hale.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We truly enjoyed our stay @ Pua Hale our new found hideaway. Thank you t my cousin for her recommendations. The Japanese waterfall is soothing and calming. We a both looking forward to retirement so we can spend more time @ Pua Hale. This makes it hard to leave. The geckos "Homer and Misty" are very friendly. Homer especially loves to pose for the camera. We felt just like little kids, we were just fascinated. Thank you also for supplying us papayas from your garden. They were sweet.

Carol Ann, we thank you for creating Pua Hale. Best of luck to you.

Pua Hale was a stylish, surprisingly quiet and secluded home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

Hand crafted home meticulously assembled and, while not new, tastefully decorated, well appointed, and clean. The owner lives on site and she was easily available but not intrusive. Her artistic flair makes the home an enjoyable original. It is spacious, and the Japanese bath is so sensible and soothing. The private patio and fountain made it hard to believe we were a one minute drive to Poipu beach. We will be back asap.

Owner's Response: I loved having John and Lani as guests at Pua Hale. I would happily welcome them back any time. I am glad they appreciated the custom furnishings in Pua Hale. The Japanese Tansu are antiques as are the Japanese brass cranes and ceramic frogs in the garden. Pua Hale is very different from the modern bamboo furnished pseudo Hawaiian units(mostly from Thailand) The original Koloa Mill large photos featured in Pua Hale were taken when Koloa's mill was still operating and are historic. The only other copies are at Grove Farm and the Hawaii State Art Museum.

beautiful, quiet location

  • 5 of 5

We loved this home. It was beautiful, quiet, private, and located in a nice local neighborhood away from tourists. We traveled to Hawaii to attend our family reunion on Oahu. Following the reunion we wanted a nice quiet place on Kauai to relax and enjoy the rest of our vacation. The home is enclosed by a tall fence which leaves the impression of being very secluded and private. There is a wonderful water fountain on the patio, which blocks out any traffic or outside noise. Carol Ann, the owner, is a wonderful, hospitable person. She made us feel very welcome and helped us with any questions or directions. This home is within walking distance to Poipu Beach, a lovely beach. It is also near several restaurants, bars, and shopping.

We would absolutely stay in this home again when we travel back to the island. As our family reunions are every 2 years we will be back there soon.

Owner's Response: Loved having Cindee and Scott stay with us at Pua Hale. They were perfect guests and I loved talking to them. Cindee's mom is from an old established Kauai family and loved getting to know her. I would love to have them back at Pua Hale for another visit.

Quiet, private, serene, relaxing, spacious one bedroom vacation house with wonderful hosts!

  • 5 of 5

Privacy wall around property fronted by a tropical garden is a wonderful asset. The kitchen is fullly equipped, the bathroom has a cool, sunken Japanese soaking tub. CarolAnn is attentive, helpful and generous. Poipu Beach is a four minute walk away. This place has everything I personally look for in a vacation rental. My husband and I have been here three times over the years and always enjoy ourselves.

Close to Poipu Beach but mice/roaches made it not a pleasant stay at Pua Hale

  • 2 of 5

Carol Ann - the owner - was very hospitable and friendly but the condition of this rental was not satisfactory to us. We saw several mice and cockroaches during our 4 day stay. We'd planned to cook our meals at the property but after seeing this, using the provided cookware, dishes and utensils was unappetizing at best. We were sitting on the couch trying to watch the NBA Finals and literally saw a mouse run across the kitchen counter, jump down on the floor and disappear into the bedroom area. Within minutes, we found numerous articles of clothing (that had been laying on our suitcases airing out) soiled with mouse feces and urine. There were mouse droppings on the bed linens, in kitchen cabinets, under furniture, and along the corners of the main room. Part of one backpack pocket was chewed and shredded. Roaches -- not unusual for a humid/hot environment but not okay either -- were seen in the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. The house is well-sized for two adults but we would definitely recommend arranging in-advance to use the A/C (which we didn't realize we needed to) not necessarily because of the heat but because of the noise from the surrounding neighborhood, especially all the roosters (which we routinely woke up to at 3am...definitely a taste of the real Kauai!). The walled-in lanai had lovely plantings and a handy outdoor shower (one of our favorite features) but the "fountain" (bamboo pipe squirting water onto rocks) was just loud enough to drown out only the TV but not any of the roosters, yelling neighbors, cars, etc. The WiFi worked fine as did the cable although via an unsecured network...no passcode. On the positive side, Poipu Beach was a quick 5min run/drive or 10-15 min walk away and numerous shops/restaurants were also very accessible. In retrospective, our four days on Kauai could have been more enjoyable if we'd changed to a different location. However, we'd already paid in full, in advance and the thought of double-paying for another room was too much for a short stay. Two stars for working WiFi & cable, proximity to Poipu Beach, and the outdoor shower. We passed these comments onto the owner directly after our stay as we were unwilling to have any additional disruption to our Kauai trip than we'd already experienced. Pua Hale might be great for some travelers but it was not satisfactory for us.

Owner's Response: I am surprised that these visitors did not talk to me while they were here about their problems. I went up and welcomed them and talked to them again before they left and no mention was made of any problems. I just found this review on VRBO and am really startled. I have never had a review like this in the 22 years I have been renting Pua Hale. This guest sent me a letter after she left which I responded to explaining that the situation was taken care of. I talked to her partner who said there were no problems as far as he knew. We found a tiny baby mouse which we managed to catch (humane trap and release) which had gotten in to the house somehow even through the whole property is surrounded with rodent control stations. There is no way that a tiny baby mouse could do the damage that the guest suggested it did. A few tiny German roaches were found for the first time ever in Pua Hale since I have a monthly pest control service. My pest control people came the next day and eliminated them, I was told by the pest control people that these roaches do not live outside but come in in grocery bags, suitcases and rental cars which are not regularly treated like Pua Hale is.. Pua Hale is in good condition and painted and maintained regularly. My cleaning people worked at the Sheraton for years so are very experienced. I built Pua Hale about 22 years ago as a vacation rental. I furnished it with antique Japanese furniture, tatami mat, shoji doors, a wonderful traditional Japanese bamboo water feature (which has an off switch if people do not like the sound), a Japanese furo soaking tub and a number of other features. It is on a dead end street at Poipu Beach on a half-acre lot and is separated from neighbors and my home by a tall wall and a fence. I have been renting it to visitors from all over the world for 22 years. We do have wild chickens which are all over Kauai. My neighbors are quiet as far as I know. I have had great reviews except for one by a couple who did not like geckos which are in all buildings in Hawaii and most people find charming.

Great Value

  • 5 of 5

It felt comfortable as soon as we walked in.

We appreciated the beautiful flower arrangement and bowel of local fruit that was left for us. There was plenty of cross-ventilation to keep things cool enough with the usual light breezes, and the overhead fans kept things pleasant on the hotter days.

We enjoyed walking down to Poipu beach to swim, snorkel and watch the sunset.

I'll definitely recommend this place to my friends.
