Villa Hada Escondida is a beautiful private and secluded home 15 minutes from San Ramon and just minutes from the road to Arenal. It is elegantly decorated with Costa Rican hardwoods, ceramic tile, original native artworks and luxurious bedding and amenities throughout. Surrounded by 180 degree pastoral mountain views of the stunning Central Valley and adjacent canyon, Villa Hada sits on a quiet country lane on the southern edge of the lush Los Angeles Cloud Forest. Our guests love when the morning and late afternoon clouds briefly enshroud the house in cloud mist in this unique ecosystem.
We enjoy an average daily high of 82F (28C) and a low of 64F (16.5C). The villa is situated on a hilltop facing east/west so you can watch the sunrise from the kitchen table and relax over a sunset that's perfectly framed by the balcony's teak timber posts. Pop your iPhone onto our dual speaker docking station and listen to your own playlist while you enjoy a morning coffee on our terrazza or balcony or spend an evening watching films on our DVD player in the sitting room.
Villa Hada is a unique family holiday home located on nearly two acres of lush rain forest and surrounded by guava and ratoncillo trees covered in epiphytes and bromeliads. Because of the humid cloud forest climate, our hibiscus hedge-enclosed garden has beautiful hydrangea and rose bushes in addition to the tropical plants you'd expect to see in Costa Rica. Our guests love the fresh guavas, bananas and plantains they can pick from our own trees.
Villa Hada Escondida has its own private rain forest nature trail which leads past our banana grove on a gently sloping zigzag path towards golden bamboo to a creek and waterfall where you'll see hummingbirds, blue morpho butterflies, tree ferns and birds of paradise. And no worries if you forgot to pack your wellies and walking stick. Villa Hada guests will find a selection of rubber wellies and bamboo walking sticks in the laundry for exploring our property.
Our proximity to the airport makes Villa Hada an excellent choice for your first or last few days in Costa Rica or for a place to totally chill out for a week. Our home is in a guarded community of European and North American expatriates. Many of our guests choose Villa Hada as place to research the San Ramon area for its affordable real estate.
Both bathrooms overlook the garden and canyon and have huge showers complete with Moen rain shower heads and plush white cotton towels. All beds feature high thread count sheets, feather down pillows and duvets, and decorative cushions and plush throws for comfort. Our colourful cotton hammocks, rocking chairs, and eucalyptus wood dining table and chairs are perfect places for birdwatching over the canyon. Art enthusiasts will love Villa Hada's collection of original artwork and paintings by the German-born La Fortuna Coco Loco Gallery owner and artist Ruth Deiseroth-Kweton and the artisan statuary by Guanacaste's indigenous Chortega indians throughout the garden.
Villa Hada's ceramic-tiled first floor features a gourmet kitchen with a stainless steel refrigerator and gas stove, a wooden trestle table with bench seating, a sitting room area with a futon, and a full-service laundry room. The downstairs bedroom has two beautiful hardwood twin beds, nightstands and armoire. A separate sink area has an elegant glass bowl basin for washing up.
Upstairs you'll find an open-beamed ceiling great room with the master bedroom's dramatic and romantic wall of ivory cotton voile curtains behind the hardwood-topped hand wrought iron railing on one side and a sitting area on the other. The sheer drapes filter the light and add privacy without blocking the gorgeous views of rolling hills through the balcony's wall of windows. The upstairs features a continuous wall of windows overlooking the canyon and has beautifully polished hardwood floors covered with colourful cotton dhurrie rugs.
The master bedroom is a cozy retreat with feather bedding, beautiful ceramic lamps and hardwood furnishings. Across from the bedroom is our cosy sitting area with a comfortable rattan settee, chairs and tables and decorative cushions, perfect for cuddling up with a good book after a fun day of exploring.
Villa Hada is available for monthly rental during the green season (May-November) only.
Although Villa Hada does not offer internet access, our guests can purchase a SIM card for their mobile telephone at the airport and receive data at the house. San Ramon also has several popular internet cafes.
Please note: Because the house can be difficult to find in the dark, all guests must arrange to arrive at the property before 5.00pm (17:00h) local time to receive the keys from our caretaker who will show you around the house.
Villa Hada is a strictly non-smoking home.
Wondering what the house's name means? Villa Hada Escondida means Country House of the Hidden Faerie. Our two small children love faeries and all things magical and truly believe that faeries exist, especially in their house in Costa Rica.
We live in Hong Kong having lived in Edinburgh, Scotland before that. and stay at Villa Hada at least one month a year. We've been traveling to Costa Rica since 1999 and love the Central Valley. We've both lived, worked and traveled to more than 45 countries and all 50 states but Villa Hada is our favorite place on earth. I am a figure skating coach and former professional ice show skater and my husband works for an international health care company. Our two small children and small dog, Matilda, love to play in Villa Hada's 'secret garden'.
I love English gardening and have designed Villa Hada Escondida's garden to look like an English garden complete with hibiscus hedgerows, hydrangea and rose bushes and a wee bougainvillea-covered pergola. We add to our garden on every visit and our fantastic caretaker keeps it all looking amazing. We are bilingual and bought our home in Los Angeles Sur so our children could grow up immersed in the beautiful Costa Rican culture.
Diana Lapierre purchased this villa in 2010
Los Angeles Sur has the perfect climate with temperatures ranging from 65-85F and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. We love the western Central Valley for its kind people, simple lifestyle, spectacular mountain views and twisty roads that are fun to drive on.
Our top 10+ favorite activities/excursions from Villa Hada are:
The weekly farmer's market in San Ramon near the University of Costa Rica where you can buy local fruits, vegetables and flowers for a fraction of the price in North America or Europe. 15 mins. away.
Birdwatching from our balcony or terrace. Our guest library includes wildlife identification books and a log of the 45 species of birds that have been seen in the Los Angeles Cloud Forest.
The Espiritu Santo Coffee Plantation tour, Naranjo, 25 minutes away.
Our children love the Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden and tour located 20 mins. north on the road to La Fortuna/Arenal.
Horseback riding through the working dairy farm at the entrance of the Los Angeles Cloud Forest. The rates are reasonable and the trails rides fantastic.
Yoga on our huge balcony overlooking the canyon as the cloud mist moves in.
Hiking our own private rain forest nature trail to see blue morphos, hummingbirds, bromeliads and tree ferns. During the green season the waterfall is about two stories high and loud enough to hear from the balcony and the back wall of the house can be covered in butterfly chrysalis.
Zip lining in the Los Angeles Cloud Forest, 15 mins. away.
Take a guided day or night tour through the 6.75 miles of trails in the Los Angeles Cloud Forest where you might see a quetzal.
Las Musas Waterfall and Waterpark, San Ramon, 20 mins. away.
Shopping in San Ramon, a delightful little city where you'll find anything you could possibly want then wander round the beautiful church by the central plaza. 15 mins. away.
Plan the next day's adventures whilst you enjoy the view from the cosy upstairs sitting room.
Villa Hada is a little hidden gem in a charming area off the beaten path but minutes away from the scenic route to Fortuna/Arenal. It's a brilliant place to relax for a few days after a long flight or to chill for a week without being far from civilisation and creature comforts.
Our home is beautifully decorated with elegant furnishings, Costa Rican artwork and window treatments throughout. Our high thread count sheets, feather down pillows and duvets, decorative cushions and high quality blankets, lap rugs and bed throws are a lovely bit of comfort. Our gourmet kitchen has everything you need to make a delicious meal in the comfort of a private home. There's a great selection of guide books, novels, brochures, DVDs and CDs in the guest library.
Villa Hada's private nature trail takes you the waterfall past golden bamboo and blue morpho butterflies and leads up to the adjacent canyon and dairy farm.
The house is lovely and just as described. Chico was very helpful and we managed to communicate despite our not speaking spanish. The only thing I might say is that anyone staying here would do well with a car with four wheel drive or an SUV. The driveway is steep and very rocky. We had a bit of a hard time with our tiny Suzuki although we made it work. But overall we very much enjoyed our stay!
What a great place to experience the Los Angeles cloud forest. The views are stunning. The house is cozy, easy to use, charming, and overall beautiful. It has everything one needs. The only thing was the WiFi...it wasn't too reliable, but then when the views are so outstanding, why would one need it? The caretaker, Chico, is a wonderful soul. We met his wife and I believe a son and they too were very friendly. The area is great...Mi Rancho is a great place for food. We enjoyed this stay and would most definitely return to Villa Hada.
Such an amazing home with a feeling of warmth and thought to all the details of what makes a home feel like a home. Cozy bed and pillows, beautiful view and plenty of amenities. Thank you Diana!!
This was our first trip to the cloud forest -- it was very peaceful and beautiful. Great back deck for yoga and watching the clouds and the house was well equipped with a wonderful kitchen and good facilities. Very nice accommodations reasonably priced to enjoy all the area attractions. The only difficulty was in the directions to the house -- perhaps they could be amended to note the distances between the turns as we got a little lost on our way up! Overall, lovely weekend! Will recommend and return!
This is a great place to stay ... We had a great time the house is as the photo's look and it was clean and ready for us. You sure do get a chance to see the amazing clouds both in the morning and at night they just drift in and out.
They have done a great trail on the property so you can walk and see the birds and butterflies and Chico their beloved freind and gardner/ care taker dose a wonderful job making you feel at home.
He dose not speak english but with lots of hand jesters and big smiles it all works out I see why he is loved so much.
We would recommend the house as it sits in a great area you can take short day trips to see other things from this location.
Diana is wonderful to deal with she will provide you with amazing local information listen to her she has done a great job at finding wonderful things to see and do and places to eat .
Thank you to the Lapierre Family

We loved the house and the location. I traveled with my husband and 3 kids (ages 8-13). This time, we were able to stay for only 2 days. I hope to go back to the San Ramon area and stay longer, and when I do, I want to stay in the same house. It was well stocked, close to everything, and we felt right at home.
Our home is a perfect choice of accommodations for a week of exploring the beautiful Central Valley or for your first or last few days in Costa Rica. Staying at Villa Hada will shorten your trip up to Arenal as it's one hour closer than most Alajuela/airport accommodations and just minutes from the most scenic route to Arenal.
