The Harney House is a Portland Bungalow located in the vibrant and eclectic Sellwood neighborhood. One of Portland’s premier neighborhoods, Sellwood is full of interesting shops, restaurants and coffee houses. Great house!

  • 5 of 5

We just stayed a week at the Harney house. It has a great open layout, a well stocked kitchen, a nice deck for dining outside, and a big backyard with blueberry and rasberry bushes! The beds were very comfortable, and the house was tastefully decorated. Also Ellen was very accommodating and we were able to use the laundry in the downstairs apartment. We have 2 young boys, ages 3 and 7, and she provided a huge bin of toys for the kids to play with. It was a 4 minute walk to the New Seasons grocery and a great location in Sellwood. Toward the end of our stay it got hot, but the upstairs had an AC unit by the landing which made it possible for our boys to still sleep upstairs even when the temps were in the mid 90s. A large fan also helped keep the room cool. The downstairs bedroom and living room also have ceiling fans which we used to stay comfortable in the heat. We hope to stay there again next summer. Thanks!

Many fond memories of our one month stay in Portland. The Harney House was comfortable, well located and had many unexpected but sincerely appreciated amenities such as fresh veggies and berries from the backyard garden. We enjoyed a variety of foods at local restaurants, especially "Killer Burger" (a favorite) within walking distance. Had feedback from several locals that the area was one of Portland's safest and least noisy. Nearly all houses on the street had flowers out front that were photogenic, and people were friendly. Ellen and James were very helpful and friendly. We would definitely come back if we returned to Portland.

The Harney House is an Excellent House for a Family

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed at the Harney House for a week this summer. We have two children ages 4 and 6. The house was a perfect size for our family, and the seating on the back patio worked out perfectly when we had guests. It is only a couple blocks away from the New Seasons Market, and we loved getting on our bikes to go get our supplies.

The location is exactly what I wanted for our vacation. We got to experience what I consider to be True Portland. The Sellwood neighborhood has lots of fun shops and the folks in the neighborhood obviously make it a priority to support their local businesses. We could bike almost anywhere. I even taught my 6-year-old how to ride without training wheels on this trip. We felt safe the entire time, and that the neighbors and passersby were aware and careful around bicyclists and kids. One morning, my husband and daughter even biked all the way to OMSI using the Springwater Trail that is very easily accessible from the house.

The house has two queen beds and a futon in the TV Room. We ended up using that futon as a bed for one of our kids, so they didn't maul each other in the night. The only downside is a skylight in that room makes it so the morning sun comes in bright and early. My son didn't care about that, though. He thought he was super cool to be able to claim the TV room as his room.

The kids also enjoyed picking berries in the garden in the back.

The house has been recently updated and the kitchen was well stocked with whatever pots, pans, dishes, spices we thought we needed. There is just one bathroom, but that worked fine for us for our trip. (Once my daughter is a teenager, we may need to reconsider.)

There is no air conditioning. It was a hot week when we were there, but it never felt oppressively hot in the house. Once the sun went down, we opened up the windows and utilized the ceiling fans.

I would stay here again in a heartbeat. (In fact, writing this review makes me want to go back right now.)

Awesome neighbourhood, awesome hosts!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, two small kids and in-laws stayed at this gorgeous home for a family wedding. The moment we walked in we felt immediately at home and like we belonged there. It was immaculately clean, the decor was warm and homey.

We found almost anything we could think of that we might need was within just steps of the house - eating, grocery shopping, trendy shops, antiquing. Check out Jade's, a nearby resto - such great food!

The beds were very comfortable and the large decks were excellent additional space to help little ones burn off some steam.

We loved the heavily-treed neighbourhood and the simple, but elegant back yard. My kids LOVED being able to grab a few berries out of the garden in the yard while they played.

The hosts were gracious, kind and very communicative, which is something I appreciated very much.

I would say that they only thing that wasn't clear when we booked (but may be now) was that there is occasionally someone living downstairs. Not that it bothered us any, but we were did have to be a bit more conscious about our little people's footsteps when we knew they were home.

We will stay here again, for sure!

Exactly what we needed

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for my husband and I and our two teenagers. It's very cute and really conveniently located. We loved walking in the neighborhood and going to get coffee or baked goods just a few blocks away. The kitchen had everything we needed and it was so nice to come home after a busy day to a comfy couch, relaxing porch and big bed.
