Silver Street Studio Retreat Fremantle

About the property

Welcome to Silver Street Studio Retreat. As a summer and winter retreat, the Silver Street Studio is something very special, very stylish, 'very Fremantle'.... and extremely comfortable. It is a haven for those who love art, travel, history......and each other. This private, spacious, two story residence is so close to the heart of South Fremantle's culinary hub- yet is in a quiet location. Secluded behind high limestone walls, within a lush courtyard garden, the Studio is the romantic's dream and has an ambient charm which is hard to beat. It is the perfect place in which to relax, escape the pressures of contemporary living, whilst being within instant reach of all facilities, the sea, and everything Fremantle has on offer.

Originally invisaged and constructed as an artist's studio and gallery for a sculptor and a ceramicist, 'Silver Street Studio' has now been owned, for the last twenty years, by another artist and her geologist husband. Today, the studios have been converted into a wonderfully creative and eclectic residence which reflects the couple's love of art and travel. Constructed from large local limestone blocks rescued from a former Fremantle church, magnificent one hundred year old timbers from 'Rob's' (South Fremantle) Jetty, and other fascinating items of memorabilia, including a turret from the old Swanbourne Hospital, the building speaks to local history, contemporary art, interior design and old world charm.

On arrival, our guests enter into a sizable courtyard garden through the small 'hobbit' door within the 'medieval' gate. In summer, this area is shaded by a plane tree, a poinciana, palms, an olive tree, a weeping mulberry and a grape vine. The alfresco garden makes an ideal setting for a private breakfast, a leisurely lunch, or a romantic evening BBQ.

Huge glass doors connect this leafy outdoor area to a large, open-plan, downstairs living space. There is a well equipped kitchen, a dining area which looks onto the garden, and a very comfortable lounge. Beautiful rugs, art works and eclectic furnishings, together with an idiosyncratic architectural style create a rich, warm environment to be enjoyed.

The upper studio level, originally the ceramics Studio, is now reached internally via a stylish industrial staircase. The bedroom has a very comfortable queen size bed, supplied with quality bedding and white laundered, linen, sheets. A small mezzanine walkway connects this space to the bathroom/dressing room which opens onto a north facing balcony. This provides a lovely 'open air' spot for a sumptuous bath under the stars....see image. The former kiln room, to the left of the balcony, has been converted into a peaceful reading/meditation space and an occasional single bedroom in summer.

The downstairs store room houses two mountain bikes which we are happy to lend to our guests to use around Fremantle and for exploring the coastal heathlands.

On arrival we give you a bottle of fine Vasse Felix 'red' and Margaret River cheeses, plus a delicious hamper for your first morning and beyond....Besides a selection of beautiful fresh fruits, the hamper contains locally made jams, WA roasted coffee beans, gourmet teas, home-made muesli, free range eggs and freshly baked bread from our local bakery at the end of the street..and more. Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements and we will adjust the hamper accordingly.

An extra single bed can be made available on request for one extra adult and/or a cot is available for a small baby. However, although large, the building is fairly open plan and we primarily see the Silver Street Studio as a romantic retreat for couples.

Please note this accommodation is not really suitable for active toddlers, or the very frail. It is a unique, wonderfully eclectic, architecturally rich, space that truly rewards those with creative spirit who want something beyond, and quite different from 'the norm'.

We are in an enviable location near great cafés, a health food shop, a gourmet super market, and all other facilities. We are just two hundred metres from the Yacht Club, Fishing Boat Harbour and a short walk from both South Beach and Central Fremantle.

You won't need a car to travel around town. Everything is walkable. However, if you choose not to walk or take the bikes, the free CAT bus service does run every ten minutes from our nearby stop. It takes a circular route around Fremantle via various sites of historic interest, stopping at the railway station for those wishing to travel into the centre of Perth. But why not take a picnic, follow the many cycle tracks to quiet beaches along the coastal heath-lands!

Fremantle is a wonderful holiday destination: Our visitors can enjoy beach life and a range of available water sports. As well as having a vibrant café culture, there are art galleries, specialty shops and many historical attractions to enjoy. These include the WA Maritime Museum, The Shipwreck Gallery, Fishing Boat Harbour, the Round House, Bather's Beach Art Precinct, the World Heritage listed Fremantle Jail with its convict built underground canal system, Fremantle Markets, The Fremantle Arts Centre (the former convict built asylum) and our recently heritage listed 'West End'. A wide range of day trips are available and regular ferries leave for Rottnest Island.... whale watching is a must. All can easily be booked through the local Tourist Office.

Fremantle offers a wide range of evening entertainments but you can of course, just sit at 'home', listen to music, watch TV/download a DVD, play chess or find a really good 'read' from our excellent selection of books - and relax!

If your required dates for Silver Street Studio are taken, we invite you to look at our other property, Coral Street Cottage, just next door, which is also registered with the Stays Group.

Feel welcome to follow us on facebook at freosilverstreetstudio . We try to keep you up to date with things happening in and around town. Here are a few comments from our Studio guest book:-

Original, quirky, mystical, wonderful.

My husband and I along with our teenage daughter had a fabulous four nights at Silver Street and felt like we had stepped back in time in Paris or London. We were made to feel so welcome with the studio warm and cosy upon arrival, assistance with our luggage, a bottle of wine, chocolates and an enviable hamper of breakfast provisions including gluten free muesli, juice, fresh delicious fresh eggs, bacon, fresh fruits and bread. Although quirky there is still all the modern conveniences you might require. Not to mention the location just a stone's throw from great local cafes and within comfortable walking distance to the markets. We would love to come back again.....many thanks!

Rustic Heaven

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Silver Street Studio. From the moment we walked through the lane and entered through the hobbit door we knew we were in for a treat. The rustic beams, textiles, wood smells and limestone walls were even better in real life than in the photos. We relaxed in the private little courtyard and locked out the world. It was so convenient to everything and we rode the bikes every day to explore the cafes and markets in Freo. A must-stay experience for people who like watching Grand Designs and love all things old, rustic and restored. Thanks again Judy and Hugh. We hope to stay again soon.

Magical Mystical Tour

  • 5 of 5

What a heart-warming experience!

My partner and I felt as though we were drawn into a mythical paradise when we were welcomed through the hobbit gate into Silver Street Studio. We both knew from the photos that it was special but I am overjoyed to say that the studio is much more than we expected. The feeling of warmth and comfort is the first thing we noticed. We both felt right at home when we walked in. We could tell straight away this was the right decision.

We wanted something a bit different from the generic hotel stay. What we got was a journey into the rustic past with a strong spiritual/artistic flavour combined with all the modern conveniences of a fully equipped kitchen.

This studio brought Fremantle alive for us in ways we couldn't imagine. We felt that the atmosphere and surroundings were so wonderful that we were content to stay in and cook for ourselves rather than go out at night. We also loved having breakfast overlooking the lush courtyard.

I am a seasoned traveller and this studio made for one of the best experiences I have ever enjoyed in my travels. We loved every minute in the studio.
