Hillside Country Retreat Bed & Breakfast

Bedrooms 3
Property type bed & breakfast
Minimum Stay 1 - 3 nights

About the property

A secluded getaway on 400 acres, yet only a 3 minute drive or a 12 minute walk to the town centre. Hillside, built in 1911, originally the seat of the pioneering Edwards family, was designed by Sir Talbot Hobbs and boasts magnificent views of Mt. Bakewell and the township of York. This beautiful, historic home remains the private residence of the current owner.

As an overnight guest, you can choose to stay in one of our queen-size ensuite guest rooms which are housed in a SEPARATE wing in the grounds and offer you privacy and every comfort. Breakfast is by arrangement and we offer a sumptuous cooked or continental breakfast in the Tea House which is situated in the gardens.

Wood stoves ensure fabulous heating and toasty surroundings during the winter months and ceiling fans and reverse-cycle air conditioners offer respite during the hot summer and facilitate a good night's sleep.

The rambling country garden is filled with Australian native plants and cottage garden favourites and an amazing collection of old farming equipment and memorabilia affords hours of interest.

Ensuite Rooms:

The MORRIS and EMILY are two ensuites with a king and a queen bed respectively and lovely deep baths to soak in at the end of a busy day! These guest rooms are constructed from rammed earth on the site of the original stable block on the property.

The MORRIS room also has a single bed to accommodate a third guest.

The STABLES is a studio room converted from an original former stable and lined throughout in Tasmanian Oak. It boasts a 2 person spa bath, a queen bed, a sitting area and a small fully equipped kitchenette, providing ideal surroundings for that romantic escape. This unit also has outdoor seating and a gas barbecue in a fenced courtyard.

All of the rooms above have reverse cycle air-conditioning.

Things to see and do.....

York is the ideal base from which to explore the Avon Valley and surrounding country towns. Sky-diving is a must in York, while Beverley provides gliding and the Avondale Discovery Farm. Northam is the hot-air ballooning centre and Cunderdin boasts a fascinating Museum. It also features displays of the results of the devastating earthquake in Meckering in 1968.

Stop-over in York en route to the famous Wave Rock in Hyden or further to the coastal cities of Albany and Esperance. Admire wonderful, locally handcrafted furniture from native West Australian timbers or trace our local history at the Residency Museum.

Lovely cottage

  • 4 of 5

Really enjoyed our stay only problem was the mosquitos and flies would of been good to have mozzie coils available and fly spray although there was a sign to say house had been sprayed so no spray allowed but didn't seem like it had.

Comfy country experience

  • 5 of 5

We stayed two nights with our girl Foxy. A very well set up cottage, a lovely warm fire greeted us and cooking facilities most adequate. Even had a sandwich maker which we took advantage of. Easy walking distance to York and coffee at a cafe nearby. Foxy enjoyed some rabbit action, all in all a most pleasant country interlude .Dand P

Great place to unwind in the countryside. Stayed in the Stables which had a wonderful spa bath and a courtyard. They even let our dog stay.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hillside! Friendly owners, beautiful surrounds, cosy cottage with everything you need and to top it all off they are dog friendly! We stayed in the Stables which has a secure fenced garden for our puppy, would 100% recommend a stay at Hillside.
