SHELLY BEACH RETREAT

Sleeps8
Bedrooms 3

Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 4 nights

Overview

About the property

Shelly Beach Retreat itself is undisputedly in a "stand out" location making it a very special place to be. Secreted within a Coastal Reserve with stunning unspoilt panoramic coastal views across Bridgewater Bay to the Bridgewater and Nelson Capes, no other house is visible from the Retreat ensuring absolute privacy. Regardless of the weather the endlessly changing ocean view (and the occasional whale) can be enjoyed from one of 2 decks or from beside the cosy wood fire through the large windows.

The isolation means it is unusual to see other people, or even footprints, whist walking along the pristine beaches. The 250 km-long Great South West Walk meanders past the property. Sections of this walk can be enjoyed along beaches, rugged cliff tops and through nearby tall eucalypt forests. A large breeding colony of Fur Seals can be viewed from the cliff-tops, and native fauna are often sited close to the house.

It is an ideal fully self-contained retreat away from the pressures of contemporary life.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

THE GREAT SOUTH WEST WALK

The Great South West Walk is a 250km long walking track offering walkers a unique environmental experience with tracks through vibrant native forests, majestic river gorges, high rugged cliff tops, and untamed beaches. At any location you are sure to view some of the most beautiful natural scenery and wildlife. There is always something fascinating or new to see, the seal colony, a gannet rookery, a petrified forest, the blowholes or even the two lighthouses. Designed as a long distance walking track, and for day or short walks, the walk is readily accessed from Portland, Nelson or from a number of road crossings. The walk invites all ages, abilities and tastes.

BRIDGEWATER BEACH

Known to the locals as "Bridgie" this four kilometre long safe surf beach is patrolled by Surf Lifesavers and is fantastic for all ages to enjoy.

BRIDGEWATER LAKES

These beautiful fresh water lakes provide a popular recreational area ideal for swimming, canoeing, waterskiing, sailboarding and power boating. By car, only five minutes away from Shelly Beach Retreat.

THE SPRINGS

The cliffs on the west coast of Bridgewater are composed of basalt, and covered in dune limestone. Water drains through the limestone, along the line of contact and emerges as springs along the cliffs, resulting in freshwater pools. A spectacular cliff-top walk and an interesting feature not to miss.

THE BLOWHOLES

The blowholes are a fascinating place to visit. The volcanic rock at the base of the cliff is formed mainly of basalt and scoria. Scoria is eroded more readily by the sea than basalt, therefore creating the blowholes that display spectacular spouts of sea spray during high seas.

PETRIFIED FOREST

Four kilometres past Bridgewater Beach, the Petrified Forest features petrified trunk formations.

SEAL CAVE

The seal colony can be reached by a two hour walk. Steps winding down lead to a viewing platform from which the seals can be seen playing below. Scenic boat trips can be taken to experience the seals up close.

PORTLAND

Portland is located in South-West Victoria, approximately 100km from Warrnambool, Mt. Gambier and Hamilton. Portland is a thriving city near the ocean with a busy port and numerous beaches ideal for swimming, surfing and fishing. the Powerhouse Motor Museum. A leisurely ride on the Portland Cable Tram connects the Portland Maritime and Discovery Centre, the Botanical Gardens, the World War II Memorial Lookout Tower, the Power House Museum and the Fawthrop Lagoon. There are also a number of eating establishments, suiting to each individual's tastes. Portland has a lot more fantastic and interesting places to visit and activities to do...all waiting for you to discover.

SHELLY BEACH

As its name suggests, Shelly Beach is well known for its variety of shells and is an area favoured by rock fishermen. A great place to collect shellS.

The perfect escape

  • 5 of 5

The perfect escape. Exactly as described.

This is our second visit with a young family - it is the perfect escape away from the hustle and bustle.

A fantastic location, easy walks to fossick on the beach and easy drive to lots of great natural attractions.

I took the good with the not so good

  • 4 of 5

There is no doubt this property has some of the most spectacular views on offer. It was peaceful and private, although yes you will see other people. My partner loved the fact there was no phone reception (me not so much), but this is an ideal place to kick back and relax for a few days. Having said this we did have some issues with mice and millipedes, however I spoke the owner after we left and am satisfied this was probably a matter of bad timing rather than a regular occurrence. I'd be hesitant to bring dogs to the property as there are no fences and quite a few references in the visitors' book to snakes on the path to the beach. We both loved the nearby natural attractions, bring your walking boots there is plenty to get out and explore.

Owner's Response: Its great that you appreciated the beautiful natural environment in which Shelly Beach Retreat is located. However, It is this environment which can also be a double edged sword under some conditions. While providing an opportunity to experience native fauna; birds, wallabies, echidnas, the occasional koala etc, it is also home to less welcome species. Unfortunately, mice and millipedes are part of the fauna and are all very much part of country life in general. We tolerate their presence and strive hard to minimise their impact on our guests but it is not possible to eradicate them entirely! They are prevalent for relatively short periods of their natural cycles during the year. The mice become active for a couple of weeks in autumn after the first rains, not only at Shelly Beach Retreat but throughout all rural areas. And yes....there is always the possibility of encountering an occasional snake in the summer months, so as you do in all rural environments, watch where you walk and control your dog!!

Nice seaside location

  • 4 of 5

Had a 2 night stopover on our way to travel the Great Ocean Road. Nice place to relax with a great ocean view, Fresh flowers in the house on arrival were lovely.

Enjoyed our stay, the only small disappointment was the overgrown path to the beach.

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay. I am sorry for any inconvenience the overgrown path may have caused you. With record rainfalls this spring the vegetation growth has been incredible! It has now been cleared and widened considerably making it very easy to access the beach.

Increditble views and fairly secluded

  • 4 of 5

Its all about the views and they were spectacular. We had a lovely stay. Great beach house and very, very well equipped. Description might need a little updating....no bath, no torch, no shampoo, you can see the Shelley Beach car park so we did see quite a few people, no electric blankets (made up for by masses of bedding), but it has far more than most holiday accommodation . Just a few minor adjustments to the description on Stayz Lovely updated kitchen and a good bathroom . Verandahs both sides allow for all weather outdoors and its dog friendly. Its a spectacular spot and I recommend it.

wonderful property

  • 4 of 5

This is a great property for dogs and proximity to the beach. Ideal for relaxation and admiring beautiful views. This was a great time away to disengage from life and the cafe only a short walk away was ideal. The kitchen was well stocked with crockery, utensils and equipment allowing baking and cooking good meals. Unfortunately there were a few things missing from the description listed on website i.e.: bath, torch, electric blankets. Other than these things, it was an ideal get away with plenty of room to relax inside or outside the house.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay. It's always rewarding for us to know guests feel relaxed and at home. I do apologise for the missing objects! When designing the recent bathroom renovation, we opted to replace a potentially dangerous shower over the bath with the spacious and more easily accessible shower alcove. The detachable shower head makes it easy to showering children. Again, for reasons of safety, electric blankets have been replaced with plenty of extra blankets.
