Why Julie Robotham chose Blackheath
We bought this property in 1995, following a wonderful stay at a nearby holiday house. We love the view and the relaxing atmosphere. We live in the urban inner west of Sydney and our children have grown up visiting the house - it is a refreshing antidote to the city. We plan to keep it in our family as long as we possibly can. We have taken holiday lettings for more than 20 years, and we are delighted that some of our guests have been visiting annually for most of that time. Recently we welcomed the "second generation" child of one of our guests - returning with their own young family. It is a great pleasure to offer an affordable holiday to people who appreciate the bush and the mountains community.

The house was beautiful & had a very nice view. Was cozy & would stay again.
Thank you for reviewing Melaleuca Cottage. I'm very glad to hear you stayed cosy on the coldest weekend of the year - including a heavy snowfall. Please come and stay with us again next time you visit the Blue Mountains.
Love the view. We have stayed many times and hope to return again soon!
Thank you! We particularly appreciate our regular guests, some of whom - like you - have been returning for many years. We look forward to welcoming you on your next trip.
Amazing view lovely warm and cosy.. Super comfy beds.. Lovely hostess super friendly.
Easy process from start to finish very accommodating host and wonderful. Weekend away.
Thank you for this great feedback. We replaced the mattresses recently and I'm glad you appreciated the extra comfort - very important when you're on holiday. It was a pleasure to welcome you and we would love to have your family stay again on your next visit to the mountains.
The check in was smooth and no issues- all we needed was sent in advance and as described. There were firefighters but no wood (as described)- the kindling from the iga was much better than the servo if you plan to get wood for a fire. The gas heater works well and it is cosy even in howling wind ( again a fire warning that in wind the chimney doesn’t work as well in an open fireplace so it got a little smoky). All utensils were there to cook for four and there is a dishwasher:)
The view was amazing and we would visit again thank you for a lovely stay
Thank you for this lovely review - very glad to hear you stayed warm during one of the coldest weeks of the year. The house is in a very exposed spot, which is great for views. It also - as you experienced - means high winds occasionally. It's good that you were able to enjoy the fireplace and I hope the wood smoke added to the authentic mountains experience! We would be delighted to welcome you back on your next visit to the mountains.
Lovely cosy cottage
We had a lovely weekend here with the kids. Cottage was nice and clean and cosy. Great views from the comfort of the dining room when it was blowing a gale outside. The kids loved being able to toast marshmallows around the fire.
Very pleased to hear that your family had a good stay and that you made the most of the winter experience. Great idea to bring the marshmallows! We would love to welcome you back next winter, or sooner.
Amazing and easy getaway
Bottom line up front: would definitely recommend.
Myself and a group of mates came from Sydney by train and stayed for 3 nights. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s just a short walk to the station/IGA/cafes and was very manageable without a car. The views were amazing, plenty of friendly birds and some nice walks. The heater + fire kept the cottage extremely warm even in mid July but bring layers because it gets quite cold outside. Julie was super easy to organise the stay with and was very lenient with arrival/departure times.
Many thanks David for your kind review. It's great that you and your friends were able to enjoy the mountains without having to organise a car, and that you stayed warm at the cottage. The train journey as you say is very practical and also offers some wonderful views that you don't see from the road. We would be delighted to welcome you back on your next trip. - Julie
The walks that start just at the end of Gordon Avenue, 200 metres from Melaleuca Cottage, are some of the most special in the mountains. They are not on the epic scale of the iconic walks on the other side of the village, but they include many gorgeous and amazing experiences, which you are likely to share with just a few locals.
Walk across creeks, and behind waterfalls. Hear your voice echo in bowl-shaped rock chambers, and rest in caves and sheltered overhangs occupied by Aboriginal people for millennia.
Start by walking to Fort Rock, and see the massive expanse of farm country down below in Megalong and Kanimbla Valley. It's less than an hour return to the cottage.
From Fort Rock, you can retrace your steps a few minutes and descend towards Porters Pass. It is a fabulous and energetic walk, including a water hole where you can cool off on hot days.
Or if you prefer not to go so deeply into the valley, you can continue round Walls Ledge, returning to Blackheath Village by a set of steps.
Many of the paths were restored in 2018 and the sign-posting is accurate and current. But remember this is a less frequented walk and make sure you have a fully charged mobile phone and plenty of water.
We keep information about the local walking trails at the cottage. You're welcome to borrow them, and there are some good downloadable versions too.
We would love to hear about your experiences with these trails - which remain our own favourites after more than 20 years of visiting. Please send us an email or include your thoughts in a review of the cottage - we'll pass your ideas on to future guests.
