About Martha Buracker

We own Buracker Construction LLC a Custom Home Builder in the Shenandoah Valley and decided to make this home a vacation rental. We thought offering this home as a vacation rental is a great way to share our favorite place.

Martha Buracker purchased this house in 2006

Why Martha Buracker chose Virginia

We live and work in this area and think it's the best place to be. I grew up in the Washington area and moved here as a teenager. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

What makes this house unique

The wrap around porch with Cracker Barrel rockers, lends itself to relaxing times with friends. Get out of the rat race and unwind. The house is far enough away from Luray and Front Royal to make you feel your are getting away, yet close enough to all the fun things this area has to offer.

The house has a wonderful wrap around porch complete with an old fashioned porch swing. The rear portion of the wrap around porch is screened (by the dining room/ kitchen area). There is a picnic table and a glass topped dining table in the screened porch area. Just on the other side of the screened porch is the patio with Stone BBQ/Outdoor Fireplace. A great place to relax and enjoy the fire, or for the kids to roast the marshmallows. The kitchen is fully equipped with a Gas Cooktop in the island. There is a Wall Oven/Microwave Combo, a dishwasher and a Trio Refrigerator with icemaker. The dining area has 6 regular chairs, but we've got a couple folding chairs in the Master Closet. Plus their are barstools for eating at the island.

An epic Shenandoah adventure!

  • 5 of 5

Several buddies and I decided we needed to plan a group adventure away from the city (Baltimore/DC) and we luckily found the "Absolute Perfect Retreat" in Shenandoah. From our first impression driving in late on Thursday night with the house lit up on the hill to each morning waking up with a cup'o Joe & nature outside it..was..SPLENDID!

Our hikes and adventures in the valley were great all on their own, but having this house as a home base was both a foundation and icing on the cake. It's spacious, perfectly situated in the northern portion of Luray Valley a short drive from the river, and has all the amenities you could wish for. The wrap-around porch is probably the best I've ever seen. We played cornhole out there, relaxed in hammocks, and enjoyed meals with ample room to spare. The kitchen was a vacation chef's dream to cook in due to it's size, the island with a great gas range, and plenty of counter space. The rooms were comfy and definitely larger than I expected. Our group of 9 was very comfortable and we felt like we could've brought twice the number of people (though realistically with beds that would've been a stretch). Although we didn't get around to using the fireplace outside it & s'mores are definitely on the to-do list next time we travel here.

The one item that was a bit odd was the sulfur smelling water. Martha mentioned the system must've been down, however our group was all from DC & Baltimore so after getting used to the slight smell it didn't detract from the amazing experience.

Martha was also extremely helpful and accommodating. She gave us GREAT advice on local trails and a swimming hole we must've hit at least 3 times at the end of a long day. And she remained flexible during last minute changes to the size of our group.

Thanks very much for the stay and we hope to make it out there again!

Owner's Response: Thanks Alex! I'm glad you guys had a great time. And thanks for the heads up on the water. We did get it serviced and found out that the chlorinator had a jamb, so everything should be good. You guys are welcome back any time!

Spacious, private, and quiet

  • 5 of 5

Great cabin. The rooms were all very large. Each bedroom has a private full bath; the master bathroom has a giant shower with multiple showerheads. All the fixtures and appliances were new. The loft area was huge with 2 twin beds, a sofa, and tons of space. My sons chose to sleep there rather than in one of the bedrooms because of the view of grazing cows. Unfinished basement has a ping-pong table. We loved this place and highly recommend it.

Warm and inviting

  • 5 of 5

For us the Lodge is like a home away from home, yet still a wonderful vacation. It has everything one could want in a vacation home, spacious, nicely furnished rooms; plenty of indoor and outdoor space for parties; gourmet kitchen; and the most inviting porch with rocking chairs for reading or just enjoying the views. The owners are very accommodating, going out of their way to make sure we are comfortable and know what local activities are available. This is definitely the place for many future vacations for us.

Absolute Perfect Retreat is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.

  • 5 of 5

This vacation home was and the setting were perfect for a week getaway from the city! The overall quality and layout were stunning, the huge wrap around porches always allow for a wonderful sunrise and sunset. The views are as the leaves were in full effect couldn't have been better. The home and surroundings allow for a great time with the skyline drive, wineries & river right down the road. If you want to getaway from the chaos and relax, i highly recommend this vacation getaway for a week or even a short weekend! Not to mention the home was clean, neat and had all the amenities! My family and I will certainly be making a 2nd trip when time allows!

fantastic vistas and comfortable rooms; homey.

  • 4 of 5

The house itself is gorgeous and ample. Its views of the mountains are breathtaking. Truly, there is nothing like sipping your morning coffee as you watch a low fog that descended into the mountains before you burn off as the sun rises and the cows gently moo. The furniture is comfortable and the rooms are ample. The tone of the place, all its organic and raw natural elements: stone hearth, wood floors, stone countertops, metallic fixtures ... it's all there. There simply is no bad view from that wraparound deck.

The **only** think I would count against it is the well water; with near constant use when I was on a 16-day retreat there, the sulfur scent and taste manifested but the water was healthy and potable. When we cooked with it or heated it for our tea, you couldn't taste it at all. Your silver and gold jewelry will turn, but they will be restored when you polish them.

Overall, the sulfur water notwithstanding, I would return here again and again. It's just an hour or so from DC - what's not to love about that?!

Owner's Response: I appreciate the positive review and comments about the house. Even the mention on the water. However, I'd like to say we have a Culligan Water System that addresses that problem, so I would have been happy to check the system to see what was up. Occasionally there are power surges in our area which kicks the system off, so if I guess I need to let guests know that if they smell a sulfur smell that they need to contact me and we'll come and re-set the system.

Weekend Getaway

  • 3 of 5

Our time at the cabin was good. The views were perfect. We loved the fire pit and gazing at the stars. The wrap around deck was also enjoyable. The property manager was accommodating and helpful to us. There were times however where we wished we were at our own home. The windows do not have blinds to block the sunlight which means the sun woke us up at sunrise. Also, there were no bathmats so our little guy had some slippery accidents getting out of the tub. The beds were in poor shape. This cabin is missing that special touch. No bed skirts, mix matched bedding, no functioning dresser, furniture that was falling apart, holes and scratches on the walls... all things that provide that little special touch. The fridge needed a deep clean as it had food from the previous visitors, dead bugs, and mold growing inside of it. The grill is very small, not adequate for the size of the home. The grill was also a grease caked-on mess of goo. The unfinished basement was not safe for our little guy to play in- even though blocks and toys are provided. Lastly, the water in the home smelled horribly of sulfur. So, the shower looked nice but when it is used it feels like you are showering amongst the nastiest fart ever. Overall, an "average" weekend away.

Owner's Response: While I appreciate the good comments, I am concerned about the negative ones. The water at the house is well water, and up until the earthquake a couple years ago had no issues. We noticed the water had changed and contacted Culligan Water Systems and testing showed we now had some iron. However, it wasn't a lot as it does not stain the toilets or sinks. We had a water system installed and also installed a chlorinator at the well, so the water is actually double treated. Sometimes we get power surges that might trip the GFI breaker that the water system is on. All it ever needs is a re-set. The guests should have contacted us, we would have been happy to re-set had we known. The refrigerator is cleaned after each guest. As for any bugs, this house is in the mountains, there are bugs. We do the best we can, and check the house for bees on the outside porches each week. There are lady bugs and stinkbugs in the Shenandoah Valley, so any house you visit here will have them, some more than others depending on the time of year. The are a nuisance, but are harmless. I leave my phone number at the house on the refrigerator, so if anyone has a question or a problem, we do respond. We want your stay to be enjoyable.
