About Phil Verner
I'm a retired designer (exhibition/interior) and wood craftsman who loves timber houses. I design and make furniture and sculptural pieces often using recycled and salvaged timber. I'm currently restoring a timber house almost 120 years old where I live with my wife Ann in Sydney.
Phil Verner purchased this House in 1980
Why Phil Verner chose Blackheath
I purchased the land where the house now stands and have designed, built, extended and furnished the house over almost 40 years. As many trees were retained as possible and the house enjoys an outlook directly into the bush and overlooks the walking track to Govetts Leap. While sitting in "urban bush" the house is only 10 minutes very pleasant walk to Blackheath village with its cafes, restaurants, pubs & shops. The swimming pool (for summer) is even closer at the end of the street.
What makes this House unique
This is not a "standard house". It features a unique design, timber flooring & panelling along with handcafted furniture. Care has been taken in the design to provide outlook and access for sun. Cross ventilation is available to provide comfort in summer and a double sided wood fireplace for winter (backed up by flued gas heaters). A collection of largely B&W Australian photography is displayed in the house usually showing the Blue Mountains. The house is in a moist pocket and the bush garden includes many tree ferns (3 species)

We had a wonderful stay at the Dell. The house had a great vibe, with everything we needed. Loved lighting the fire in the evening and sitting on the deck in the morning watching the birds. Beautiful outlook with a walking track and park for the kids close by. Thanks for sharing your house with us!
Thanks for your great review Julia & pleased you & your family loved the house
A tidy cottage with everything you need and a great vibe
We made the Dell our base for 3 days of bushwalking around Blackheath. This early 80's cottage is a blast from the past with its split level living, high pitched ceilings, mission brown exposed beams, skylights and angled lighting. The kitchen has everything you need to cook up a storm including a awesome gas top stove. The highlight is surely the slow combustion fireplace that sits in the middle of the dining and lounge rooms. Its warm atmospheric and inviting.
Thanks for your review Glenn & very pleased that you & your boys enjoyed the house & walks at Blackheath
This is our second stay at The Dell. This time we brought friends. We all loved it!
It was 3deg outside, inside was much warmer with the fireplace alight. Kids loved it, had a B.B.Q, watched T.V, slept in, when for a local bush walk, had a little visitor at night, a cute little possum & of coarse visited the little towns. Loved Leura. The waterfall shower is AWESOME! It was just a very relaxed atmosphere. Will definitely be back next winter. The owner Phil was such a nice guy, so thank you Phil for our stay. Don't hesitate, book it now, you'll have a wonderful relaxing time. PS: There's a park & duck pond down the road, the kids will love feeding the ducks:)
Thanks John, Glad all had a good time. Look forward to your next visit. Cheers Phil
Was a great house for a group of women catching up
A perfect house and location for a group of friends on a trail running weekend. Cozy, plenty of space, quiet and warm, with all the comforts of home and more. Phil's communication prior to our stay was very good. He went above and beyond following our stay, posting forgotten belongings the next day! We will be back for sure.
A very peaceful and comfortable property
Enjoyed the quiet, the birds, accessibility to Blackheath park / shops / walks - so much so that we have booked for another holiday at The Dell
Blackheath is a mountain village at just over 1000 metres altitude at the top of the Great Dividing Range. It's an area of great nature beauty away from the bustle of Katoomba and has good walking tracks including the recently refurbished Grand Canyon walk. The house directly overlooks the walking track to the Govetts Leap lookout.
