Having grown up in North Carolina, I moved to Alaska at the age of 21, where I lived and worked for 19 years and where all 3 of my boys were born. We moved back to NC in 2003 and lived in Hart House as a family until 2011. With 2 of my 3 boys away at school, my sons and I no longer needed such a big space but did not want to part with our beloved family home. So, the decision was made to move into a smaller property and offer Hart House to guests who wanted to experience a wonderful western North Carolina retreat together in one house - not in a hotel. It has been more rewarding than we could have imagined to know that groups of families, friends, business colleagues and wedding parties have come together to enjoy the Asheville area and the home that we love. If you are reading this...I hope that we can make your stay in the Asheville area the best that it can be!!
Mary Hart purchased this house in 2003
Hart House was purchased as a family home because I wanted to live, work, and raise my children in the Asheville area. Western North Carolina is beautiful, the people are genuine, the culture is outstanding, and there is more to do here than there is time in which to do it. It is wonderful to see people from other places enjoying the beauty and character of the Asheville area!
My favorite things about Hart House: sitting in front of one of the fireplaces on a winter's night; cooking for groups of friends or family - 3 ovens and lots of counter space make it SO much easier; sipping a cup of tea on the front porch on a peaceful, warm Spring morning; roasting marshmallows around the campfire pit in the lower yard; grilling dinner on the back porch while enjoying a glass of wine and music with my family and friends.
House was great for a large party. Landscape was very scenic! Would definitely recommend to others
Upon arrival October 19th, you're in total "awe" on your approach to Hart House - beautiful! Inside, "WOW" - you have to visit yourself to believe the greatness of the Hart House.
So accommodating - we had 10 adults with 7 children (ages 3 to 8) and we never stepped upon each other. The kids (and a BIG kid) did the outside - wonderful run around space with play gym. Adults did great room, patio, scenic front porch, kitchen and, simply, relaxed (some worked!) in this huge home. Sleeping in the comfortable beds, throughout the home, made some of us "sleep inners" - bathing was so easy with a Jack 'n Jill, 2 masters, 1 in double bed room and a powder room.
This home was built to perfection, well thoughtout and with the best of materials - just lovely - all the guys admired the build on Hart House.
The first day the kids met the next door neighbor and her horses - did not pester as their Papas were with them - the Papas enjoyed talking with her while the kids loved watching the horses - lovely person.
Hart House kitchen is filled to capacity with all you need (except food) to prepare wonderful meals - we only did breakfast, lunches and snack time. Thank you for the S'mores supplies but, unfortunately, we did not get to roasting and enjoying. However, the kids and BIG kids did enjoy them and the apples that were provided - some of us did the apple farm nearby which was lots of fun. We visited Sierra Nevada Brewery for one dinner - great place - very tasty small plating and, let us not forget, the yummy beer. All other dinners were done in Asheville with the wedding and reception at Antler Hill Barn on the Biltmore Estate - beautiful setup, splendid food and entertainment.
We all decided that we would like to spend a Christmas at the Hart House but that will have to take place in a couple 2-3 years.
Mary and Amoreena were so helpful to my brother-in-law, Dave, and myself when we had a question or concern - the kind of people you love to work with, when planning such an event.
One concern we thought we should mention are the floods in the kitchen, they flicker "on & off" while utilizing other electrical appliances. I read other reviews but no current one mentioned this, but you might want to check it out. We did not use any other electrical type equipment other than our laptops and household appliances. Just a small concern.
Thank you for a wonderful mini vacation with our family.
We had a wonderful time at the Hart House celebrating my Dad’s 90th birthday!
He was so pleased that we could enjoy such a beautiful home where we could all stay comfortably. The facilities were great. We cooked all our meals at the house…kitchen was well equipped and there were plenty of plates, table service and glassware. Refrigerator was a great size and at one meal I think we used all 3 ovens – perfect.
The downstairs rooms are nicely set up for group conversations and the kids loved the swing set. Beds were comfortable, too. Several members of our group did the “lazy-mans river tubing" on Friday…and enjoyed it!
What a marvelous place Hart House is! We recommend it for family gatherings. Thanks again for a great place for a wonderful event!
We recently had a family reunion at the Hart House. Family members ranged in age from 71 years to 16 months. Amoreena was very helpful with every inquiry and the house and its surroundings made for a beautiful and comfortable setting. The great room, kitchen and covered back porch were perfect for meals and gatherings of the whole family, yet there was plenty of space for individuals and small groups to spread out and find a quiet nook. We made good use of the games in the cabinet next to the fireplace and the swing set and basketball hoop on the grounds. The kitchen was well appointed with all we needed for preparing and serving our meals. The bedrooms were great and the bathrooms were spotless with plenty of towels. We also appreciated the feeling of being in a quiet rural setting, yet minutes away from grocery shopping, restaurants, natural parks and Asheville's great offerings.
A great house for an extended family get together. Beds were very comfortable, Plenty of bathrooms, a great front porch, patio, and back yard. The first floor had many rooms for the family to spread out. I have rented many houses and condos, and when it says the kitchen is well stocked, they mean it. Plenty of quality pot's, pan's, mixing bowl's, cutting knifes, plates, silverware, wine glasses, and beer glasses. Even had a cabinet full of spices.
We were very pleased that Mary allowed us to bring our Golden Retriever. He had a good time running in the back yard, and being with the family.
We would do it again the next time we were in the area.
The Hart House was nothing less than perfect for our small wedding. Mary was graciously hospitable, and made us feel right at home as soon as we arrived. The house was set up perfectly for our intimate wedding and we were sad to leave such a beautiful estate. We will be returning for family reunions in the future. We highly reccommend this rental for any occasion.
