We spent a lovely week at The Pond View cottage.
If you want to relax and unwind here's the place. If you want to shop and be close to "touristy" attractions this isn't it. Stay in Newport. This is a modern cottage tastefully furnished (think Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware). Spacious, light and comfortable. Huge kitchen and Master bedroom. Large work desk and internet for those who can't leave the office The property sits down a gravel lane and gets no traffic. The houses each set on at least a couple of acres so there is ample privacy although you can see a couple of other homes from the yard. The outdoor areas are expansive---plenty of room for entertaining, playing and relaxing. Very nice outdoor dining area.
The 2 bedrooms and kitchen have french doors to the porch---all with a view of the pond, ocean beyond, islands and faintly Martha's Vineyard in the distance. We enjoyed a gorgeous sunrise each morning---as the cottage faces East. Sunsets are nice too! Bed was comfy.
Do visit the Little Compton Historical Society--- the tour and museum are well worth the $5. Do shop locally at the Wilbour General Store (they have just about everything from food to hardware to gift items. Do check out the Consignment shop. Do eat at A-1 Pizza----their brownies are especially good as is their pizza!
If you plan on using the kayak or canoe bring old shoes or boots---the put in is swampy. Do bring beach towels!
Pick up some wood at one of the local stands for the outdoor Bar-B-Que. (The indoor fireplace is not to be used). Lots of areas to explore locally. GO to the Beach go for a hike. We went to Newport one day and did the Cliff Walk.
Great retreat for family fun, romantic get-away or nature lovers. Do request sheets and towels if you are flying in (like we were). Well maintained and recommended.
No toilet paper, hairdryer, soap, sheets, pillow cases, bath & beach towels, napkins, dishtowels, firewood ..... When I fly 2000 miles for a vacation of Limited duration
I don't expect to have to drive miles to an urban area to outfit the property
with essentials for living...and spend a day or two of my vacation doing it. Expect that at this property because it's what you'll be doing. This little house is gorgeous, the property is lovely and pastoral, the beach is close and the farms surround. The high beam ceilings and French doors flood the little house with a beautiful beach light....but I can't enjoy it, I have to get in the car, find a store, and buy toilet paper, soap and a hairdryer. If you are traveling a long distance to visit Rhode Island, and you don't want to pay to check extra luggage after shopping and packing household essentials; or you want to enjoy a vacation and don't want to hunt down an urban shopping mall to outfit the property, then I have to recommend you skip this property and find one that includes essentials which most travelers reasonably expect to come with a semi-luxury property.
The coastal town of Little Compton, RI perfectly blends the history of its rural beginnings with the beautiful seaside community that has grown up with it. You enter the town with a sense of disconnect from the rest of the hustle and bustle and feel your tension fade away as you pass open fields and views of river and ocean. Enjoy sea breezes and the sounds of nature. The Town Commons is at the center of town where the restaurants, coffee shops, general store, gas station, post office, library and churches are located. Summer brings back our visiting friends, abundant local farm stands and seasonal events. A great place for a getaway from everyday life and relax on the beach!
