It is also possible to take an organized day trip from Akureyri to the island of Grimsey, which straddles the Arctic Circle. One of the most extraordinary aspects of Akureyri is its warm climate. Although its sits only 60 miles from the Arctic Circle, it has some of the best weather in Iceland. Summer temperatures frequently range in the high 20-°C!

Gunnar Gylfason purchased this villa in 2011
Let me tell you, this summer house is even better than in the pictures. All the people in our little group have travelled a lot and seen a lot of different places, but we all absolutely loved it.
In the end of august 2012, my husband and I rented the house for 10 days as our base for trips around Northern Iceland.
Five of those days our friends with their two little kids (1 & 4 years old) joined us.
We were all amazed when we opened the door and saw the view out of the huge living room windows.
You look right onto the fjord, against the mountains and left and right into the valleys. Whenever the weather changes (about every 10 minutes) the view changes with it. At night you see beautifully lit Akureyri.
Once inside the house, the arrangement of the rooms is perfect.
Right in the middle is the living room and the open kitchen and off that are the bedrooms and bathroom. The living room is a perfect meeting place and also big enough for everyone to do something different. The separate toilet is also perfect when you stay with more people. Outside the house is the big terrace with the barbecue and the hot tub which we enjoyed every evening - sitting in the hot tub looking onto Akureyri at night is magical!
Being right opposite the airport worried me a little before we arrived, but once inside the house, it´s even fun to watch the few small propeller aircrafts start and leave. You hardly even hear them sitting outside.
The house is modern and clean but has a warm feel to it.
The owners are very friendly and relaxed and more than once offered their help which we did not need as everything was just perfect.
I will recommend this property to everyone who would like to go to Iceland and whenever we will go again, we will definetely stay there again.
We absolutely loved the nature around it and spend every day doing long trips, walks in the lava fields and around the craters, whale watching, bathing, berry picking and enjoying the great food Iceland has to offer.
Even the standard supermarkets sell high quality products.
Akureyri has some good restaurants, but mostly we spend our evenings ´at home` eating some fish or lamb off the barbecue :-)
When we travelled to Iceland before, we stayed at hotels, but honestly, renting a house, especially like this, is much more homely and relaxing.
We also rented the 4x4 Jeep Cherokee from the owners. It is a great, luxurious car and much cheaper than renting a car from a hire company.
A newly built (2010) very modern and spacious house sitting on the southwestern shores of the North Coast’s Eyjafjordur Fjord, one of the most breathtaking fjords in Iceland. Rising up immediately behind the city Akureyri are azure farmlands that slope gently up to basalt mountains where our house is standing. The mountains are capped by snow year round, and in the winter they offer great skiing.
The house is only in a 10 min. drive from Akureyri - the Capital of the North. One of the most extraordinary aspects of Akureyri is its warm climate and although its sits only 60 miles from the Arctic Circle, it has some of the best weather in Iceland. Summer temperatures frequently range in the high 60''s (20°C).
Anywhere else, Akureyri’s population of only 19,000 would probably constitute what most countries call a “small town,” but in Iceland a number like that definitely qualifies Akureyri as a city. It has more than its share of museums, Akureyri is also home to the world’s northernmost botanical garden and 18-hole golf course. Outside the city are numerous opportunities for excursions, the most popular being the road skirting the beautiful western shore of the Eyjafjordur Fjord, the magnificent waterfalls, Goðafoss and Dettifoss, Dimmuborgir, Lake Mývatn and the Grand Canyon of Jökulsárgljúfur. It is also possible to take an organized day trip from Akureyri to the island of Grimsey, which straddles the Arctic Circle.
House equipped with all the modern commodities, veranda and jacuzzi. Close to center of Akureyri where all the services of a modern town can be enjoyed.
