The Art Cottage on Big Cedar Lake is perfect for those who appreciate good taste and high quality, we built our dream home to share with you! There is art in every room, all of which is original and by local artists. The living area is open plan with comfortable seating and dining for 6 people. The modern, European style kitchen has all the equipment a good cook needs, with a large fridge freezer and dishwasher. Our water comes directly from the lake, filtered and UV treated for perfectly drinkable water. There are 2 bedrooms - 1 king, 1 queen - and a loft with ladder for older kids. There are 2 large flat screen TV's, both with DVD players, one in the master bedroom and one in the loft - personally, we don't like TV in the main living area, hope you feel the same! Bedding and towels are supplied in the rental price. Outside there is a wrap around balcony with a large area for the BBQ and outdoor tables and chairs. The lawn has two steps leading directly into the lake which is shallow and sandy, ideal for young children, gradually leading to a deeper area for swimming. For those who love water we have 2 kayaks, a canoe and a pedal boat, on land there are 2 bicycles and you cant fail but catch a fish in the lake! Barbeque and star gaze from the balcony, or tell stories around the fire pit by the lake, the evenings are taken care of in this luxurious and tranquil location.
Kawartha means 'Land of Shining Waters' and is the name that First Nations people gave to the region surrounding the modern-day city of Peterborough. It remains a fitting description of an area renowned for its wealth of sparkling lakes and rivers, rugged landscape and deep forest of which Big Cedar Lake is a relatively small but perfect example, being 3 miles long and 1 mile wide situated on the edge of a Provincial Park and deep forest. The lake is spring fed and one of the cleanest in Ontario.
The Art Cottage on Big Cedar Lake is in the heart of this renowned, exceptionally picturesque region. A General Store and great diner are just 3 km away and the pretty village of Lakefield a 20 minute drive. Lakefield has 3 excellent restaurants as well as good shopping for foodies and gift seekers. Another 20 minutes' drive takes you to the eclectic city of Peterborough where there is plenty of shopping, live music and entertainment, art and cultural activities, and first class restaurants. The Kawarthas and surrounding region offers a full range of exciting year-round experiences including cross-country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling, skating, horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, golfing, swimming, water skiing, fishing, white water rafting, as well as many arts and cultural attractions.
We live in rural East Sussex, England and have been visiting Big Cedar for the last 15 years, it's our home from home and we have some great friends at Big Cedar which is a really friendly and supportive community. Now our children are all grown up we thought we would have more time to spend in Canada, but what did we do?...we bought a puppy and now are more tied than ever! Hence we thought we would share our lovely home with appreciative renters who share our love of the outdoors and beautiful art.
JOHN AND NANCY purchased this cottage in 2012
We were out fishing as the sun set on Big Cedar Lake, looking back at the rather ramshackle cottage we had just bought on the edge of the lake. The location was perfect, wonderful views, perfect swimming, lots of wildlife, but we were beginning to realise that we would probably have to tear it down and start again, the structure was very rickety and bats had taken over in the roof. Then John said, 'Why don't we just build a new one ourselves?' I looked at him doubtfully, I knew he was very practical and knows his stuff as a quantity surveyor (project manager for you Canadians) but it seemed a big step to do it ourselves. 'I don't know the first thing about building...just the two of us? No way!...What, you mean you really think we could do it?' 'Well,' he said confidently, eyes gleaming and a broad smile as he grew more excited about the idea, 'we wont know unless we try!' So, over 3 summers, we sweated and toiled, (of course those were the 3 hottest summers in history) learned all the Canadian rules and regulations, not to mention a different vocabulary for building products and materials, and here we are with the most beautiful cottage we could ever have imagined! All done with our own fair hands and lots of pulled muscles. If only we had contacted the producers of the TV programme Grand Designs, we would have had it all on record...maybe next time?
Here is a comment from a five star rating we had last year for our sister property:
We were unlucky to be visiting at a time when a very large area of 'cottage country' was without power due to storms. But Nancy got in touch with us as soon as the power went down (soon before we set off from Toronto). She kept up the communication by phone and email from the UK. Meanwhile Shannon, who maintains the property when Nancy and John are not in Canada, provided a large petrol generator for electricity, plus fuel, and bottled water. After two days the power was back, which was a relief, but the effects had been minimised. we stayed a week and had plenty to do. The lake itself was almost spookily warm; the water is very clear, and not deep. The several boats provided (open canoe, kayak, sit-on kayak and pedalboat) were very much appreciated. You can easily take two or three days just paddling around the perimeter of the lake and exploring. Local attractions like the petroglyphs and Lakefield feel close by, even for those used to driving in Europe. Similarly the drive from Toronto was not a hardship. There is a lovely little general store at the top of the road to the lake. For bigger shopping trips, Lakefield has a good supermarket.
We just returned from the most perfect, relaxing vacation at the Art Cottage. The only thing more gorgeous than the lake & water was the cottage itself. It had absolutely everything we could ever want & more. The area was very peaceful & quiet, but still close to everything we needed. We only left one time all week to get more supplies. Can't wait to book again for next year!
The property and the location were absolutely perfect. It was incredibly clean and comfortable and very relaxing. The property was located on the most perfect view of the water and very private. The canoe and paddle boat and kayaks were fantastic!
We honestly had the most incredible bonding time with our 2 boys ages 4 and 8.
We didn't turn the TV on once and we didn't use our iPads or laptops at all.
The only thing missing was having a boat. We have booked again for next year and can't wait to return to this perfect setting.
We just returned from a 1 week stay in the Art Cottage and we couldn't be more happy with our vacation. The cottage is gorgeous and incredibly comfortable (especially the red couch). My two little girls had the best time out in the paddle boats and kayaks, I couldn't keep them out of the water. The waterfront is nice and shallow and you can walk out quite far before you can't touch the bottom which was great for our kids. It is great family fishing in the lake. My kids were catching fish within minutes of putting their lines in the water. LOTS of large mouth and bass :).
Although there are other cottages around it feels incredibly private and very quiet and peaceful. Shannon was friendly and very helpful and Nancy was great, responds quickly and was a pleasure to book a cottage through :). We loved our stay so much we have already booked again for next year. We can't wait to go back!
Thanks so much for sharing your cottage with our family Nancy and John.
*sidenote* anyone going to the cottage should check out Spaghetti House if you are in Lakefield. Their pizza and wings were really good, great service, big portions and affordable prices :)
Where do I start.....
We arrived at the cottage with our three kids 17, 14, and 12. The intent was quality family time with no technology. The cottage is located on Big Cedar Lake and has beautiful landscaped lakefront views and access. The cottage itself is newly renovated, clean and well maintained. We spent most of our time on the lake using the provided canoe, kayaks and paddleboat. By the evening the kids were too tired to even look at their phones...Perfect! Shannon the property manager was very nice and close by if we needed anything, which we didn't. A truly perfect location for our family retreat.
My husband and I stayed with another couple and we LOVED our last long weekend of the summer spent at Cedar Lake.... the cottage is beautiful, modern, bright with a really fun decor......AND the beds are very comfortable! Nancy and John also gave us a bottle wine which was a very nice touch to welcome us! The cottage is placed in a quiet part of the lake and right on the water! There is a nice entrance into the water where it is weed free and shallow to stand or sit and there’s LOTS of fish to catch.... small ones off the property and bigger ones out in the lake where you can canoe and paddle boat to get to them. Our favorite thing about cottage is having the paddle boats and the canoe to use, it was so enjoyable! We had great weather so we spent all our time hanging out in the back looking over the water, having camp fires and swimming! We would go back in a heartbeat!!!!! Thank you again Nancy and John!
The Art Cottage on pristine Big Cedar Lake is to be found in the North Kawarthas, an area peppered with lakes and waterways, 2 hours car journey north-east of Toronto and just north of the pretty village of Lakefield. The cottage sits by a small bay only a few steps from the water, which is shallow and sandy from the garden steps and then swimmable into the lake. The views over the lake look toward the Provincial Park (a protected area) on the far shore. The lake water is clear and warm in summer, perfect for swimming, fishing and enjoying being surrounded by nature - beavers, loons, osprey, chipmunks and even the occasional otter. Local attractions include Algonquin Provincial Park, the close-by Petroglyphs Park (a native heritage site) and the Trent waterway flowing through the city of Peterborough (25 kms) with its Canoe Museum, famous Lift Lock, shops, restaurants etc.
