We are both retired now and live next door to the cottage in the main house, so we are usually available to advise or assist whenever needed. However we will never be a nuisance to you and only seek to enhance you holiday experience.
Graham and Jenny Venters purchased this cottage in 2009
We bought the main house in 2009, it was in a very bad state but as soon as we saw it we just fell in love with it and so we renovated it and then we did the cottage 3 years later in early 2012. It was a derilict 'Cow House' and we did the reconstruction sympathetically to the original style and in a manner that we would be happy to stay in it ourselves, Hence the cottage is very well equipped to a high standard and is very comfortable. We chose to live in this area as it is very quiet and the views are out of this world. The house and cottage are a little off the beaten track and so you will experience the 'Real' Madeira as against the Tourist images usually offered. Also, being at 400 mtrs altitude it does not get too hot in Summer or too Cold in Winter.
We offer a range of additional services with the cottage ranging from an evening meal service, boat trips for big game or bottom fishing or just a gentle cruise along the coastline and airport transfers.
After staying in Funchal on many occasions we thought with a little bit of trepidation it was time to visit a different part of Maderia . We are so glad we did. Set up in the hills above Caletha the cottage has great views down into a valley and out to sea . You could watch kestrels and buzzards from the balcony. The directions given but Jenny and Graham where spot on , it took around 45 minutes to drive to the cottage from the airport mostly on the express way . I think a car is a must . We where made very welcome in the small bar which joins the village shop . We spoke no Portuguese and they spoke very little English but some how we spent a couple of hours on a couple of evenings chatting in the bar . The cottage is in a good location to visit other parts of the island . The cottage had every thing you would need for a holiday . Ideal for walkers and people who just like to sight see.
Great location, fab views of both mountains and sea, good Base for walking. Jenny & Graham make great hosts and it's just like home from home.
What a beautiful situation Palheiro Cottage stands in. One winds up the steep hill and there it is on the left, hanging on the edge, looking down to the valley, left to the sea and right to the mountains. The balcony overlooks the valley and the roof terrace above gives a wider view. Inside is clean and simple with all mod cons.
Jenny and Graham were excellent hosts. They were helpful, friendly and informative. They have very good local knowledge and this was handy re supermarket, garage etc. We appreciated the wine, eggs, bread, butter and homemade jam they had for us on arrival. The eggs from Jenny's hens were the best we've had! And we really liked the mince pies she gave us on Christmas Eve - they were delicious!
When we had a problem with the cooker Graham sorted it smoothly and quickly and now there is a very good induction hob which we enjoyed cooking our Christmas dinner on.
We slept well there on a bed that suited us and were warm enough as there are extra blankets if needed. When we were there the temperature changed from warm to cold quite quickly both from day to day and within the day so we were often taking clothes off and on. There's a heater to warm the place if needed.
The cottage is situated in a beautiful, warm part of the island. We accessed all parts of the island from there but mainly the west and the southern coast as there were clouds over the mountains most days apart from two.
We were very happy to have been in Palheiro Cottage for our two weeks in December.
Immaculately presented modern cottage, perfect for two, with everything we needed provided and in good order. Great outlook from main living area and balcony over steeply-sided valley of cultivated terraces. A bonus - village shop and bar a minute's walk for basic provisions every day, with friendly owner encouraging any visitor's attempts at Portuguese! Cottage owners living next door at hand for any advice, if needed.
A beautiful place to discover Madeira. Jenny and Graham are perfect hosts to make your stay as comfortable as possible.... and they are great cooks. We enjoyed the fish-barbecue, which we were invited to on the roof-top of the apartment. (This was for free and gives you the impression, you live among good neighbors. Thank you very much for a wonderful week. Andrea & Martin
My husband and I stayed for a week at Palheiro Cottage, hosted by Jenny and Graham and had a fantastic time. The cottage itself is beautifully appointed, with spacious living accommodation inside as well as plenty of outside space with the balcony and the roof terrace. We were warmly welcomed by Jenny and Graham, given a tour of the cottage and lots of helpful information about the local village, Calheta and beyond: such as supermarkets, parking tips and places to visit on the island. We felt reassured that we could come to Jenny and Graham with anything and it was lovely to say hello in the morning and stop for a friendly chat. It was the village chapel feast day during our stay and we were able to observe the village procession and the festivities with our hosts. The kitchen was stocked with basics and we very much enjoyed the meal service provided by the hosts; wonderful home cooked food and delicious wine. We had an amazing experience on the boat cruise with Graham on the Gavito, watching dolphins and whales and seeing the stunning coastline of Madeira from the water. Additional thanks to Graham for trying to teach my husband to fish! The boat trip was a truly exceptional experience and we would urge guests to book it! We hired a car during our week long stay to explore the island, taking a hire company recommendation from our hosts. This was essential for us because we like to have the freedom to come and go. We balanced our stay with trips around the island and days at home. For non drivers, there were always taxis available. Whether you are looking for a base from which to explore Madeira fully or if you are looking for a place to relax, soak up the sun and scenery then Palheiro Cottage is the perfect choice for either. This was our first visit to the island and will definitely be coming back to stay at Palheiro Cottage. Our thanks and best wishes to Jenny and Graham for being such fantastic hosts.
I do not know where to begin and I hope that I will not forget something to write:
1. As I wrote in the tittle view from the balcony is fantastic (especially at sunset), 180 degree horizontally & approximately 150 degree vertically, from ocean on the left to the clouds on the right.
2. It is a very peaceful neighborhood, and at night you can hear only the sound of crickets
3. The house is clean and well organized, it is equipped to feel like you are at your own home (to the thinnest details: books, binoculars, playing cards, spices, dishes...)
4. Location is very good and very near to the Calheta beach, but certainly if you are not hiker it is preferably to rent a car
5. Owners are the kindest people. Due to wind condition on the island we couldn't land and we lost one day in Lisbon. Because of all that we had situation with rent a car agency and we lost car too. Owners help us to overcome all problems, Mr. Graham wait for us on the airport, drive us to the cottage and they even find car for us which came to the cottage early in the morning.
I will certainly recommend this property to all my friends and this beautiful island too, and I hope that I will visit it again.
Our cottage is located on the outskirts of Estrela which is the commercial centre for the Calheta Region. We are withing easy walking distance of the village and some Lavada Walks . Also some of the most spectacular Lavada Walks (the 25 Fontes at Rabacal) are within our region and are easily accessed by car. The Marina is but a short drive from the cottage and this has a number of Restaurants and Bars. There is also a sand beach next to the Marina with a safe swimming area, although you may choose to go out to sea with Graham on his boat and swim in the Ocean or view the Whales and Dolphins or even go fishing for your supper! The boat is fully licenced and insured. 15 Kilometers away is Cabo Girao, the second highest Sea Cliff in the World with a cable car from the top to almost the bottom and a view point with glass floor.Swim in the natural pools at Porto Moniz which is just a short drive away.
