The house is located at north, in the best kept secret of Gran Canaria (the Laurel Canyon). Just two miles from the protected natural reserve of Los Tilos, one of the last strongholds of Laurisilva and within the Parque Rural Doramas and 15 minutes away from the coast.
The house sits between Moya and Fontanales, from there you can enjoy both towns, with their quaint houses and restaurants. It will serve you as a great retreat to enjoy the island and its mountains. The location is ideal for resting, relaxing and hiking. If you seek peace and nature, this is the ideal starting point to discover the island of Gran Canaria.
Our house was built in 1850, so it has all the flvour of the Canry Islands traditional arquitecture. It has been recently renovated to give it today comforts with a special flavour. You can completely relax in the Jacuzzi or in one of the terraces.
Moya center is approximately 10 minutesaway in a car and there you can do your shopping and visit the gorge of Los Tilos. The nearest beach is 15 km. Makesure you visit to thewhite village of Agaete thirty minutes away.
We also provide you with websites from which you could contract services such as mountain biking, windsurfing and much more.
Walking around the house you can enjoy spectacular views and buy handicrafts or fresh products of the area. The existence of a rich flora and fauna endemic to the island makes the area a paradise for botanists, photographers and lovers of nature.
The coast is also one of the main attractions of the island and from the house you can visit golden, gray or black sandy beaches or small ones hidden among rocks and cliffs.
Very close to the house is the highest peak of Moya with its volcanic scenery and contrasting shapes and colors. Two natural constructions are the ones who taround 3. 000 years ago shaped the existing relief, which hold the 'record' of being one of the last volcanic eruptions in the island: Montañón Negro and Caldera de los Pinos.
In the Caldera de Los Pinos, one can appreciate the volcanic relief of the inner walls of the volcano.
A great gastronomy, is one of the offers of this area that due to its particualr situation in the mountains but close to the sea offers a wide variety of products, from the typical canary islands soup (potage that come in around ten different mixes, beans, chickpeas, lentils, watercrass...), to pork, goat, rabbit and beef. But for thise that prefer fish you can order a variety of twenty seafood dishes in the area. Other two products that complement the local cuisine are the sweets from Moya, famous throughout the island and cheese varieties that can be found nearby. (Museo del Queso).
Shopping is possible in different shopping centers through the island but if you are tired of malls have a stroll in the traditional Triana Street, where the 'canarios' walk, talk and take 'tapas' while shopping. There you can also find more selected products and designer stores.
Do not forget also if you visit between the months of February and March the fabulous Carnival of Las Palmas with street musicians, drag-queen contest, parade, throngs and glamorous choice of the Queen of Carnival, a spectacle of color and sound.
Traditional in the island also are the festivals in different towns, festivals that gather traditions that date back to the Guanches or festivals that celebrate the natural wealth of this privileged island. Each village has its particular saint and for several days celebrate with cultural and musical events that often culminate in the typical 'verbena', a party that takes place outdoors in the village square, wher locals, eat, dance and have fun until late hours in the night.
In recent years has also increased the popularity of the wines of the islands, and today many wineries allow visitors to its facilities.

Hi my name is Rosa and my friends known me as Rosa Mesa. I was born in the island but I traveled abroad at younf age living in the Caribean, Venezuela, Thailand and Kenia , working as a divemaster. Later I moved to Canada (where I lived for 13 years in Toronto). I have also lived in Barcelona (3 years), two in Switzerland and three in Berlin. For the last three years I have been living in Gran Canaria with my family. I love nature, culture and good food. I am an artist and art therapist.
Our house el Laurel is our own refugy where we escaped everytime we can. We chose it because it give us the energy we need for our daily lifes. Because of my extensive experience living in the North I have learn to appreciate more and more this island and what it has to offer and I am happy to raise my child here.
Now that I live again in the island I enjoy providing our guests with a piece of this beautiful place, remebering how important was for me my winter escapes for so many years. It is true that the islands are mainly known for their beaches but it has really much more to offer. The light in the island is simply fascinating, it covers everything and also transforms you when you visit. The blues (how much I have actually missed them) are brilliant and in contrast with the green of the valley is simply visual food, an instant relaxation. This mountains are other of the secrets of this island, with multiples places to hike or bike.
The original inhabitants of the islands (guanches) did enjoy walking though the mountains, sometimes using huge sticks to fly over them. The mountains here can take your breath away. Due to the special weather conditions in the island, not too hot, not too cold , you can live almost in an eternal spring so it is a grat place to hike all year around.
In the house you will be by yourself, in a friendly rural enviroiment, away from tourism. In contrast with the coast you will live in a natural space with plenty of vegetation, the evergreen forest. The restaurants in the area do not know tourism so they offer local food at great prices. The house is located fifteen minutes from the coast and fitteen minutes from the mountains so you are in a great place to explore.
We were looking for a holiday with sun in February but still in Europe and Gran Canria ticked all the boxes. We walk regularly and on a whim booked Casa el Laural, it is remote. The road up to Moya from the GC2 is best done at night when you cannot see the overhang! Moya itself is perched on the edge of a deep ravine and the road up to the cottage is a steep single track road, twisting and turning up through a tiny narrow valley.
The cottage is surrounded by fields and up a crazy steep track and stone built. It is spacious with two bedrooms and two bathrooms and would easily be comfortable for six. We drove to Puerto de las Nieves to see the sea one day, but otherwise walked up and down the valleys. Fonatanales has several well marked footpaths and excellent bars which serve substantial meals.
The weather was perfect at just over 20 degrees and just one overcast day and no rain. We improved our Spanish and started our suntan.
We were for two weeks at Casa El Laurel, we had planned to spend two weeks in the island and altough we wanted to go some time to the beach we were looking for a place in the mountains. Some friends were already at the house some years ago so we tried. We had an amazing time. The house is more than perfect for four people, we had (each couple) a bedroom and a toilet so a lot of privacy. The house is delicious with a great decoration and very cozy. You have all the comforts than promises it but the real treat, the ambience is hard to describe. We enjoy a lot the three terrases and the game room that although does not have state of the art games was a lot of fun. The coast is around 20 minutes away. You need a car for sure always.Restaurant around are cheap and lovely but not always open. Shopping is great in Moya. We will be back
We were for a whole month at Casa El Laurel, the weather was lovely and we really enjoy our stay. The house is very big and is well supplied. the terrase is perfect and the area around the house is rural and quite. there are great cheap restaurants in the area. We recommend Los Tilo Grill, run by Jose, great food at incredible price and super friendly enviroiment. We visit Moya often and Fontanales but we also went south to Maspalomas and west to Agaete. if you like fish this north coast is the best choice. if you are lucky you maybe can eat on the sea at the italian restaurant on El Roque. It is a little bit more expensive and the owner is a bit excentric but absolutly worthy. under our hostess advice we visited Las palmas and found a great diverse city with a lot of terrase, cultural centers, museums, opera and shopping.
on the down side you definetly need a car in the island and it can get tricky driving at night in the mountains. The tourist are all in the south so in Moya you will be just fine if you like local atmosphere. We highly recommend this place.
We were really impressed by the beauty of the area. It is a very relaxing valley and a good base to explore the island. You need a car. The hiking is fantastic and the restaurants around are cheap, hearty and delicious. You wont need to cook.
The house was lovely, huge for two people, high ceilings, very clean. They gave us linen and towels. You have everything you need and some extras, the Jacuzzi, the pool table and soccer table, exterior barbecue...
We enjoy a lot the terrace.
We recommend it.

For those who enjoy contemporary art spaces you will be surprise with the CAAM (Centro Atalntico de Arte Moderno) or La Regenta and contemporary galleries as Saro León and Manuel Ojeda.

Casa el Laurel is a traditional 100 year old stone built Canararian farmers cottage, surrounded by fields. It is spacious with two bedrooms and two bathrooms a living room with kitchen and dining area and large lounge room, outside access to a wash room and massive games room complete with pool and football table. Outside there is sheltered barbecue area, large sun patio and an outdoor hot tub. It has 2 foot thick walls designed to keep cool in summer. Situated in the tight fertile valley created when the lava flowed from the ancient volcanoes that make up Gran Canaria, it has it's own micro weather system, with the tiny hill farms that surround the cottage busy growing crops all year round. The valley is criss-crossed with narrow roads joining farms and cottages, missed by through traffic and is an absolute joy for walkers, with several excellent long distance signposted footpaths starting from Fontanales. (thanks a lot to Simon Redston (one of our guests) for this fantastic description of our property, we could not do better).
