About Rebecca Maxey
Born and raised in Alaska, I love sharing my State and city with visitors, and sharing stories of adventures far and close to home. I grew up working and playing on the remote Alaska Peninsula where my parents, retired teachers, owned and operated a fly-out fishing lodge. After jaunts away for school on the East coast and Europe (the University of Edinburgh and Universidad Computense Madrid), I returned home to begin a law practice and create a beautiful setting for inspired living. I continue to travel widely, practice yoga and meditation, and sing with the Anchorage Concert Chorus.
Why Rebecca Maxey chose Hillside East
Upon acquiring this unique property in 2004, I moved the log cabin that my father hand-scribed from its original home site. I added a fully functioning bathroom addition, which includes a large shower, washer/dryer and large closet/storage area, as well as a large deck from which guests can enjoy the outside views. The cabin is nestled on a 3.3 acre wooded and gardened property where moose and other animal sightings are year-round.
What makes this Cabin unique
This retreat offers a truly Alaska experience of a log cabin aesthetic, with beauty and comfort that will inspire and delight. It is the perfect setting from which to launch your Great Land adventures, or hide away for soulful rest, relaxation and reflection.

We stayed here for 10 days. We had never been to Alaska before and were mainly coming to hike. There are hundreds of trails to climb in the area and the cabin is only 15-20 minutes away from many of the trailheads. It is also within 15 minutes of downtown, so it is easy to catch the train for a day excursion. The cabin is comfortable and has an excellent view of Anchorage from the front porch as well as a very attractive garden area. The cabin is close to the main house but we didn't feel that was a problem in anyway. The owner was gone during most of our visit but was good about communicating via email if we had a question. We loved our time here and felt quite at home in this cozy little cabin. We miss it already!
Great cabin. Close to the chugach with an incredible view. Super friendly host.
Cozy cabin in a great location.
Easy access to Anchorage and area.
This is a very cozy cabin! The added bathroom area is large with ample closet space for storing belongings. The washer/dryer was a huge factor in our decision so that we could pack more efficiently for our travels. The bedroom area is up a ladder, which feels very private with a very comfortable king sized bed and large windows. The deck is perfect for admiring the gorgeous mountain views during the day, and breathtaking sunsets at night. One evening we even got to see a mama moose and her baby come up the driveway and post up under a tree for several hours.
The cabin is in a great location for exploring the Anchorage area. We recommend taking the drive down Seward highway - either direction - you can't go wrong. We spent a couple of our days skiing Alyeska - which is an absolutely great resort area for all experience levels (beginner to expert). If you don't ski or visit during the summer there is a tram that takes you to the top of the mountain where a restaurant/bar awaits with GORGEOUS views of Turnagain Arm. We spent half a day Ice Fishing on Echo Lake and feeding the Eagles our tiny catches - what an experience! BE SURE to check out Moose's Tooth Pizza in Anchorage!
A few things we discovered once arrived, that if we knew ahead of time may have swayed our decision to stay (due to personal preference - this cabin is absolutely amazing otherwise)
- The cabin is in Hillside which is a residential neighborhood. It is located on the owner's(?) property, in very close proximity to their house. From the description and photos we assumed it was a bit more remote. The owner wasn't home during our entire stay, (sorry to have missed you!), but we probably wouldn't have picked this spot had we known ahead of time as we do prefer to be more secluded. There's also no TV (which the listing didn't say it had). Typically this wouldn't matter to us, but the sun set pretty early while there and so we had planned ahead of time to spend our evenings in. We ended up buying some games at the local Fred Meyer, so in the end didn't miss it one bit.
Overall I think anyone would enjoy this cabin. I mean, you're in Alaska - everywhere you go is absolutely amazing!
It was a peaceful and charming little cabin - perfect getaway.
The property and cabin were exactly as described on the website. The owner put outdoor Christmas lights up and a decorated tree inside - that was such a personalized touch for the time of our trip : ) It was warm and cozy, easy to navigate the driveway in the snow, and the view at night was beautiful with city lights and snow covered everything!
We are very glad to have found this little piece of heaven for our getaway.
