Guestbook comments from the manager

Six of us have just come back from an idyllic early September break at the Masseria. We fell in love with this beautifully restored building, with its cool, honey-coloured stone walls, high arched ceilings and whitewashed exterior. Mature olive and almond groves add to the feeling that it's been there forever, with a couple of (currently unoccupied) trulli more or less the only other buildings in sight.

Pretty much everything else about the place is new - all the mod cons you'd expect of a high-end villa, but also beautiful furnishings and artefacts from around the world giving it a sophisticated yet homely feel. There was plenty of space for all of us to have our privacy, with room to spare (the Masseria accommodates nine with ease) and more bathrooms than we knew what to do with.

The pool is huge, with a comfortable seating/eating area and plenty of loungers, perfect for cooling off after a day trip, or nursing a beer and watching the sun go down.

Some great restaurants a short drive away, but do take up Darren and Donatella - the English/Italian couple who look after the place - on their offer of an evening learning how to cook Puglian-style. We had a fabulous evening, well lubricated with their own vineyard's excellent wine and their own olive oil.

All in all, this is a brilliant place to use as a base to explore this relatively unknown part of Italy, or just to lap up the sun, the food, and the peace and quiet.

Beautifully restored 16th Century farmhouse with large private pool
average rating of 5.0 based on 15 reviews

  • 5 of 5

Our party of six adults had a most enjoyable stay at Masseria Casalicchio over the first week of October 2016, not least because of the attentions of the caretakers, Donatella and Darren - Donatella offering a spectacular buffet meal, from fresh local produce, on the evening of our arrival, and Darren providing invaluable help during a medical emergency.

The handsome barrel-vaulted farmhouse preserves a basic 16th-century structure in combination with a thoroughly modernised, spacious, and comfortable interior. Being some distance from main roads, set among a landscape of seemingly limitless olives groves (and with its own large swimming pool), the house is totally quiet - sounds of nature apart - and entirely safe for young children.

It had been our intention to visit notable cities and towns such as Brindisi, Lecce, Taranto, and Matera, but found, in the event, that there was an abundance of attractive places closer at hand and suitable for half-day excursions: Conversano, Locorotondo, Martina France, Ostuni, and, on the coast, Bari, Polignano a Mare, and Monopoli.

All in all, Masseria Casalicchio and its locality can be warmly recommended, both for families and for groups of adults.

Excellent in all ways and we found it as described

  • 5 of 5

The farmhouse has been thoughtfully and comfortably restored. It sits amongst fields of vines and olives only a short drive from Castellano and supermarket etc. The coast is about 20 minutes away. There is great attention to detail - breakfast was provided and Daz and Donatella couldn't have been more welcoming and kind. They provided us with an amazing meal on arrival that our children still talk about.

Relaxation and Comfort at Masseria Casalicchio

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at the Masseria, a family party of six adults. The Masseria is set in the midst of olive groves and vineyards, quiet and secluded. It has been beautifully restored with all the facilities that you could require, super comfortable beds and a colourful garden with lemon trees, oleanders and agapanthus, all in flower. There is a large outside shaded area with tables and chairs and a splendid pool very carefully maintained by Darren.

On arrival we were met and guided to the Masseria by Darren, who with his wife Donatella produced the most delicious, home cooked meal of authentic local fare; a wonderful way to start our holiday. Darren was very easy to contact and full of useful suggestions of good local restaurants, markets and other places to visit. In particular, on his suggestion, we had a day out at Torre Guacheto, an unspoilt nature reserve with an endless curved sandy beach, beautiful swimming and walking. Other highlights were the local medieval town of Conversano, the seaside resort of Polignano a Mare and the partly excavated ruins at Egnazia.

The Masseria is rural and very quiet, an ideal restorative after busy city life, with lazy, sunny days of swimming and reading in a beautiful setting. Darren and his wife were very thoughtful and kind and added greatly to the pleasure of our stay. Two of the party have coeliac disease and Darren and Dona could not have been more helpful in providing delicious food they could eat safely and suggesting local, "coeliac friendly" restaurants. We were very grateful for their understanding and efforts.

We all had an excellent time at Masseria Casalicchio and could not recommend it more highly.

Wonderful Farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Masseria Casalicchio was absolutely faultless. It was the perfect holiday home. As a party of 8 we had a fantastic family holiday-it's great for families with very young children as we have. The masseria was spotless, well equipped, comfortable and spacious. Darren and Donatella were very hospitable and always available with advise and recommendations for things to do in the local area. The meal they prepared for us was out of this world and plentiful! We had enough leftovers to feed us all for days afterwards! If anyone is hesitant in booking don't be. You won't be disappointed.

Great home absolutely perfect for large groups

  • 5 of 5

The pictures of this beautiful vacation home aren't able to convey just how thoughtful the design and decorating of this restored farmhouse truly are. The owners clearly invested both time and money to make Masseria Casalicchio a true oasis in southern Italy. The property location provides complete tranquility, but with very convenient access to nearby towns that have all manner of resources needed by travelers. It's also within easy driving distance for numerous day trips in and around Puglia. Would highly recommend allowing the caretakers (both delightful people) to prepare dinner for you early in your stay; the food was delicious and bountiful - we had leftovers for days. Our group of 14 people had ample room to congregate both indoors and outdoors, yet allowed us to retire to our separate spaces when needed. The five star rating is well deserved!

Masseria Casalicchio is in close proximity to many of Puglia’s famous hilltop towns, each with their own character and historical centres quite unspoilt by new development. Within 5 minutes is Castellana Grotte, a beautiful market town with banks, supermarkets, restaurants and the world famous caves, arguably the most beautiful in Europe. The ancient town of Conversano, steeped in history with a medieval castle dating from Norman times is just 15 minutes and Putignano, a lively ‘buzzing’ town with an abundance of eateries and shops is an easy 15 minutes in the other direction. Within easy reach is the ‘must see’ town of Alberobello a UNESCO heritage site and fascinating place to explore the trulli, the conical shaped houses unique to Puglia. Nearby is Polignano al Mare, a spectacular seaside town built on limestone cliffs and the spectacular circular town of Locorotondo, famous for white wine. The coast is approximately 18km away, with some lovely beaches and coves and for the gourmand, fresh fish and seafood restaurants are in plentiful supply. Other local towns worthy of a visit are Martina Franca, an elegant baroque town that hosts Puglia’s famous outdoor musical festival, and the ‘”White City’ Ostuni with its whitewashed houses and cobbled streets. Slightly further afield, but still within an hour and a half is Lecce, known as the Florence of the South and Matera, the World Heritage Site of the ‘Sassi Caves’ where 'The Passion of the Christ ' was filmed, can be visited in a day trip.
