We are a retired couple - James previously worked in the City (London) and Helen in a GP surgery as a psychotherapist. We have two sons and one grandson. Besides the latter, our passion is gardening and we are always seeking new ways to develop the different areas of the garden at Petites Cotes. Our chief desire is to give our guests pleasure as well as relaxation in the beautiful surroundings of Perigord Vert. We spend time in both London and France. We are members of a book, history and gardening club and attend the local English speaking church in France. We love eating out especially as there are many inexpensive restaurants in the area.
Helen & James Gray purchased this cottage in 2004
This property offers almost everything for complete relaxation - for art, wildlife and garden lovers (see below for further details)
A heated swimming pool, unique pool tower with WFI and small kitchen plus changing area and a paddling pool for little ones and a safe garden/wood for children to explore. An arboretum with specimen trees - a wild garden with many different Perigord Orchids in Spring - an Iris Garden - Wildlife Pond stocked with fish and a resident terrapin to name a few of the unique benefits we offer.
La Petite Maison delivered absolutely everything it promised to.
The cottage was full of character, felt very spacious and was a home from home. The pool area was huge and sunny and the pool was probably the largest and best we have had on a holiday. It was so peaceful lying by or swimming in the pool but we also loved being able to play badminton, table tennis and use the basket ball hoop. We used the BBQ several times and loved the many outside tables to eat at depending on the time of day and the weather. The gardens were spectacular and vast and our children and dogs enjoyed the space and freedom.
The area around La Petite Maison was absolutely stunning and we saw hardly any other tourists which was a big plus point for us. Verteillac, only a 5 minute drive away, had everything we needed. A very well stocked general store, great butchers, amazing bakery and a really lovely bar/restaurant that we ate at several times. We also managed to fit in Kayaking twice during our stay which was inexpensive, local and great fun.
Helen and James the owners were an absolute pleasure to meet and went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. They were next door if we needed them but never intruded and we had a week of really special family time. We would return to La Petite Maison in a heartbeat and couldn't recommend it highly enough.
Thank you Helen and James xx
Everything that has been said in previous reviews over the years is genuine, the descriptions are heartfelt. Petites Cotes welcomes guests with open arms like a soft blanket: the house, the beautiful garden and wider environment, and owners Helen and James are truly unforgettable. The private pool was important to us and is fabulous, clean and well-maintained. There is a good combination of shade and sun in the beautiful garden. Our labrador was safe and made welcome. Wifi was also important and it worked better than BT... Like others, we were torn between staying put the whole holiday or visiting the area, but there are some lovely towns to see within a 45 minute drive and combining these visits with a meal or a market worked well for us. Our 14 year old daughter was very happy here. We were so sorry to only have had one week here and would highly recommend this property. Thanks and fond wishes 🌸
A fabulous quiet rural family holiday! We had two great weeks staying in the Perigord at La Petite Maison, for the first week there were six of us staying and in the second week just my wife and I and our two teenage daughters. The facilities are excellent, with the pool being a particular highlight - it is one of the largest and best kept pools we have ever had exclusive use of on holiday.
Helen and James are perfect hosts - around when needed but otherwise leaving you to your privacy. The local town Verteillac is very friendly and picturesque and has some great restaurants and bars. If you like cycling, there are miles and miles of undulating hills and quiet roads to get around. Weather was pretty good for most of our two weeks, some rain but mostly warm and sunny.
All in a all a great holiday and a fantastic place to stay if you like rural France.
We had a lovely two weeks at La Petite Maison. The house is very comfortable and homely and we settled in straight away. James and Helen are lovely hosts and are on hand if you need them, but otherwise are only to be seen pottering around the garden (probably doing a little more than pottering, as the gardens are beautifully kept and attract butterflies, bees, lizards, deer etc.) The pool area is fantastic with plenty of sun beds and our youngest loved the paddling area.
Verteillac is about 10 minutes down the road and has plenty of restaurants to choose from and some great local shops. The surrounding countryside is very picturesque with sleepy villages and fantastic scenery. Nearby is the lovely, bustling town of Brantome, with some great restaurants and is one of the many places where you can hire a canoe or rowing boat and spend a couple of hours on the river. The kids loved the caves and various prehistoric sites dotted around the area.
If you're looking for a beautiful, peaceful place to stay in a less touristy area of Perigord, but within reach of some great attractions and historic sites, then you won't be disappointed.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this cottage - it really is a rural retreat where you can escape from the stresses of everyday life. The swimming facilities are outstanding; immaculately kept and very attractive. Our children also thoroughly enjoyed using the badminton court. James and Helen are great hosts - knowledgeable about the area, friendly and helpful without ever being intrusive. An added bonus was the gorgeous sunflowers that line the entrance to the property and the stunning sunsets! Local facilities in Vertaillac were more than adequate and we also enjoyed a couple of weekend markets. A car is essential at this property and we used ours most days to visit attractions slightly further afield, of which there are quite a few. A favourite was a medieval fayre in a neighbouring town. We took children ranging in age from 17 down to 8 and there was something for everyone. A lovely holiday, thank you.
We stayed for a week in 2012 and had a very happy family holiday and our children (early teens) were glad to return in 2013.
This time was even better as we had more time to explore the environs as well as relax in the pool and the lovely gardens. There was lots of interesting wildlife (butterflies, lizards, red squirrels and much more) and the local facilities had charm and met our needs perfectly. Helen & James are delightful hosts, who balanced our privacy with attentive interest perfectly. There is plenty to do without the need to go further afield and yet we found a range of interesting options nearby without a long car journey. The cottage was charming, clean and welcoming and we made full use of the table tennis and badminton as well as the exceptional pool. We have stayed in a few properties in different parts of France over the years and for family holidays this is our favourite.
Perigord Vert is known as the most unspoiled part of the Dordogne being a paradise for country life lovers and an inspiration for artists. Verteillac, the nearest town is 8 minutes by car and buzzes all the year round. It has almost all amenities - baker, bank, bars, butcher, chemist, hairdresser, newsagent, post office, restaurants and boasts the 'best general store' in the Dordogne selling everything from groceries to furniture. There is a weekly Saturday market and the area has numerous, reasonably priced restaurants. There is a lovely sandy riverside beach at Aubeterre which is within easy reach of the domaine plus nearby fishing, horse riding, tennis, walking, canoeing, golfing, medieval towns, Romaneque churches, prehistoric caves - to name just a few! Within an hours' drive is the Dordogne Valley and the wine regions of Bergerac and Pecharmant. Bordeaux, St Emillion and Pommerol are a little further away. There is an English speaking church at Bertric Buree with weekly services
Other Activities: There is also a children's mini clock golf course and canoeing nearby.
