There is lots to like about this house. The owner is honest, responsible, and responsive; the kitchen and bathrooms are in good shape; the pool is nice (if a bit chilly); and the view is terrific. There really were only two downsides. First, although advertised as sleeping 8, it's really only comfortable for 6. The extra beds, such as they were, were really uncomfortable, even for our teenagers' backs. Plus, the fourth bedroom is more like an office and wasn't set up for the bed when we arrived. In addition, the next-door neighbors' dogs are annoying. Ignore any reviews that describe the dogs as threatening; they're small and behind gates. Rather, it's the constant din of yapping that got on our nerves. At least, the dogs are taken inside at night. This all said, the villa is in good condition, the location is quite nice (above the city looking down at it), and the owner is trustworthy. Improving the additional beds and adding wireless would be terrific, but the house is a very good value as is. We're Americans who've owned rental property ourselves before, so it's possible our standards are too high. Certainly, this property compares favorably with everywhere else we've stayed in Spain.

Owner's Response: Thanks for this. We have already purchased some new furniture, including the beds which you commented upon. These will be installed over the winter, including the general furniture for the 4th bedroom. Regarding the dogs, the neighbour occasionally breeds Catlan mountain dogs and so there are young puppies in their spacious garden for a few weeks once every four months or so. It was unfortunate for you that your visit occurred at this time. They are good friends and have a more rural property nearby so I will speak to them about relocating any puppies during house rental periods.

Girona villa

Our family of 4 stayed in this villa for 8 weeks. We had various extended family members visiting us throughout our stay, and the house was often full. This house met our needs very well. It slept 8 quite easily, bathrooms are adequate, and space plentiful. The outdoor spaces are beautiful, and our kids, despite the cooler temperatures in April this year, were in the pool almost daily. The house agents (Joy in UK; Cesar in Spain) were approachable and responded quickly to minor issues. The house is located in a fantastic location on Montjuic in Girona. The views from the decks are incredible. The walk up and down the hill was a challenge with a 2 year old, but the bus was available and inexpensive. We often walked to the Barri Vell (Old Town) for an evening gelato. We found that hauling groceries was difficult, and having a rental car for that purpose was an asset. The listing description was accurate, and we were pleasantly surprised at the spaciousness of the villa. The property was clean and well maintained. With a young family, we spent much time at the park near the Montjuic castle ruins (10 min walk), exploring in old town, and visiting Devesa Park on market days. We are a cycling family, and the villa was a perfect starting point for all local rides in Girona, as well as for hikes to Sant Miguel. We were in Girona during Flower Festival, and this house was also a perfect starting point for exploring that wonderful May event. Dogs were abundant, but in 8 wks only kept us up once, and weren't nearly as loud as jubilant football fans! We would return to this property.

Well located Girona villa with pool

  • 4 of 5

The villa is perfect for a city holiday with access to the coast and all the amenities and attractions that Gerona can offer, along with a good sized pool for swimming and cooling off on a hot day. The pool area would benefit from some new pool furniture. We never tired of the view across the city, whether at breakfast time from the balcony or over an early evening drink before a night out. Access into the city was very easy and the return equally straightforward – a frequent bus service during the day and cheap taxi ride later in the evening. We hired a car but you could manage without one. Some better directions if driving from Gerona airport would have been helpful especially if you arrive at night! The villa is spacious – it accommodated nine of us quite easily – and well appointed. In high summer, every bedroom would benefit from a fan. The villa is in a quiet residential area and we were not bothered by noisy dogs.

In Gerona we’d recommend the cinema museum very highly – go on a Sunday when admission is free. Take a walk round the extensive remains of the city walls and visit the spectacular cathedral. The Ramblas is popular but we preferred, the Placa Independiencia, where there is a real buzz from the cafes and restaurants as the local enjoy a late night out or a morning coffee. Our favourite day trip was a 30 minute drive away – to the small town of Besalu, famous for its fortified bridge. It’s a little tourist oriented, but not excessively so, and the bridge is particularly photogenic. Take the short guided tour that includes the Mikve, one of only three surviving Jewish purification baths in Europe. Avoid the busy Dali sites at Figueras and Port Ligat and head for Gala’s house at Pubol (Salvador Dali bought it for his wife as a private retreat, now it’s a small but fascinating musuem) – it’s a gem. It’s also easy and cheap to go further afield by train, south to Barcelona or north to Port-Bou and the French border.

You might not normally consider staying in Gerona – many visitors to Spain only know it for its airport and never see the city. There can’t be many places where you can be so close to a historic city centre and yet be able to stay in a genuine retreat from the bustle of the city below. Try it!

Would love to return to this villa

  • 4 of 5

Six (females) of us spent a most enjoyable few days at this lovely villa. Photos are spot on and the villa has everything you could possibly need for a fabulous holiday. The views are just spectacular! The villa is spotlessly clean and we all had plenty of space to chill out! Getting down the hill to Girona was no problem and only took a few minutes, we didn't tackle the climb back up but got either buses or taxis.

The booking agent (Joy) and agent in Spain (Cesar) were so helpful and I hope that we can all return for a longer stay as we all thoroughly enjoyed the break

Excellent choice (despite the dogs)

  • 4 of 5

Our party of seven adults had a wonderful time in the villa. It is very spacious and has all the amenities that you could wish for apart from air conditioning. The pool is a decent size and is a great way to cool off after the steep walk up from town. Girona itself has plenty of museums, restaurants, shops, bars and even a tourist train to keep you occupied. While we were staying there was a partially completed villa on the next plot but no building activity going on.

About the dogs. The ones in the garden next door were very excitable and ran up and down behind the fence whenever someone walked along the path separating the two properties. This was alarming at first but we got used to it. There are other dogs in the neighborhood that bark ferociously when someone walks past their property. I don't think they are used to pedestrians. They can be avoided by using the bus, which seems to be fairly frequent, or getting a taxi up from town.

You could have a relaxing vacation here without a car but shopping might be a problem. The shop at the garage up the hill stocks basic things like bread, milk, wine and beer but the supermarkets are too far to walk. It's well worth checking out the local market on Saturdays and Tuesdays for fresh fruit and vegetables (and novelty underwear if that's your thing).

A lovely villa

  • 4 of 5

After getting lost we finally loacted the villa. The agent Ceaser was kind enough to wait for us to hand over the key. The villa was lovely and very clean and equipped with everything that you could possibly need. The living and dinning area was big enough to accommodate our big group. The pool was really nice and clean and was lovely to swim in. The view from the balcany was amazing. We didn't walk down the hill as we hired out cars but it looked like you need to be really fit to do the walk up the hill. The only problem we had was that the living and dinning room was infested with flies. No matter how clean we kept those areas the flies did not go away, it was a nightmare to eat anything in those two rooms but we had no problems eating out in the balcony. Would definitely recommend to friends but will advise them to buy fly spray which we kept forgotting to buy.

Girona is a small beautiful town with lots of character and restaurants that you can eat out in.
