Overview

Haute-Marne Barn Rental Photos and Description

Spacious 2-bedroomed gite combining rustic charm with modern convenience

Our two-bedroomed, two-bathroomed gite has beams and exposed stone to remind you of its agricultural origins whilst having all the modern additions that you'd expect from a luxury holiday letting - a spacious kitchen with high-quality appliances, British and French TV, wireless internet, underfloor heating and a wood burning stove. There are no hidden charges in our rental price - linen, electricity, heating (including wood for the stove) and cleaning at the end of your stay are included. Sociable, well-behaved dogs are welcome.

Cirfontaines en Azois is a small village four hours by car from Calais, and also accessible by train. This secret corner of France is almost unknown to tourists yet offers a wide variety of activities and places of interest. But, enticed by the beautiful view of the forest and the south-facing terrace, you may prefer to relax by the solar-heated pool and then watch the sun go down with an aperitif!

Two years after buying our farmhouse as a holiday home we were so seduced by this corner of France that we picked up sticks and moved here. Our gite is a conversion of one of the two barns on our property and, while we are close by if you need help or ideas for making the most of your stay, another large barn separates our house from the gite so you can also enjoy your holiday in seclusion!

Before moving here, we enjoyed many Gite holidays in France and we've applied our experiences, good and bad, in designing and fitting out our property. So, the kitchen has plenty of space for several people to cook at once, there's a utility room to hide dirty boots and dry wet coats and there's a second fridge for keeping sufficient rosé (or Champagne) chilled.

The village is well-placed for you explore the Champagne region and Burgundy. Our visitors have enjoyed local attractions like the historic town of Langres, the De Gaulle museum at Colombey les Deux Eglises and the lakes east of Troyes and around Montier en Der, both renowned for bird-spotting.

Further afield, it's more than feasible to enjoy a day in Troyes, Reims, Dijon, Auxerre, Gray or Chablis. Central Paris is also accessible by train and it's not unknown for our visitors to drive to Disneyland Paris.

Our website gives you more information on things you can do during your holiday here.

Second visit hope to return again :-)

  • 5 of 5

My second stay, love the place, it's quiet with lovely local walks and scenery. It's great to sit by the pool, relax and have a BBQ, visit the local champagne and wine areas. It is extremely dog friendly and my three Spinone were made to feel at home by Sarah, Jonathan and of course, Circé. The property is very spacious, comfortable and very well equipped. Would love to visit again soon!

A perfect long weekend

  • 5 of 5

We fully enjoyed the stay at the gite - a perfect place for our family with 3 children! The sun was out, the weather really nice and the pool was very much appreciated.

The owners are really friendly and gave lots of advice on what to do in the area, thank you very much, Sarah and Jonathan!

The house is spacious and very well equipped, very clean. One of the best gites we have ever been to.

The children already miss Circe, the owners' dog!

Fall in love with rural France

  • 5 of 5

This was our first venture to France and we were absolutely delighted with our choice of area and holiday home. From the minute we arrived, Sarah and Jonathan were the perfect hosts, welcoming both us and our girls into their haven and providing everything we could possibly need for our two-week stay.

The gite is delightful and perhaps more spacious than you would expect from the photos. It was extremely well equipped and we didn't want for anything during our stay. Sarah and Jonathan were on hand should you need any information or advice but, equally, totally respected your privacy. The supper and wine provided for us on arrival was thoughtful and much appreciated, and sharing a glass of Champagne with the owners on the first evening made us feel instantly at ease.

Cirfontaines-en-Azois is well situated to enable you to do absolutely nothing, or get out and about and see a lot. We fitted into the latter category and found ourselves in Paris, Nancy, Dijon, Langres, Chaumont, Nigloland, (the nearby theme park)... I could go on but these where just some of the highlights! When we did choose to stay at the gite, our girls made the most of the swimming pool, come rain or shine, and thoroughly enjoyed having it to themselves. Many an hour could be wiled away just enjoying the tranquillity of the surroundings and, in good weather, this would be the perfect place to do so.

In summary, we loved every minute of our holiday and would highly recommend this property without hesitation. We couldn't have asked for a better gite, more friendly/helpful owners or more serene surroundings. A true gem in the Champagne region and a place were truly happy memories are made.

Great time in Cirfontaines en Azois

  • 5 of 5

Fabulous gite, which was so well equipped, they have though of everything you could possibly need. There is plenty of room, two large doubles, each with their own bathroom; large spacious kitchen and living area with satellite TV (should you wish the need to catch up on English TV!); the swimming pool is lovely to have a cool down in or to just sit and soak up some rays next to. Lots of information and maps to hand, to make the most of visiting the area. Hosts Sarah and Jonathan were very friendly and helpful. It is very doggie friendly, Circé the Labrador made our two Spinone very welcome. The garden area is large and safe for the dogs to relax and have a holiday too! There are beautiful walks direct from the door, where you can meet all types of wildlife and take in the perfect views. Just a short drive away there are many small towns with their own beautiful walks, and close by a great restaurant and bar (La Belle Epoque - Chateauvillain) which serves super food. We were sad to leave and will definitely be returning. Á la prochaine!

A delightful gite in beautiful surroundings.

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at the gite in Cirfontaines en Azois after an easy drive of 4/5 hours. We had no problems finding the address due to the clear instructions. The property was just as described, although somewhat larger than we had expected. There was plenty of space for three weary travellers. As has been said before, the gite is equipped with just about everything we could have needed and was very comfortable. Sarah and Jonathan were thoughtful and kind hosts who made us feel quite at home. We were delighted to find the delicious supper that had been prepared for us. Thank you! The gite was spotlessly clean, well appointed and set in lovely surroundings; rural but not remote.

Our hosts provided an excellent customer service, which included bringing fresh bread and croissants to our door every morning in time for breakfast, from the travelling boulangerie in the next town. During our stay we enjoyed exploring the Champagne area. Our favourites were trip to Chaumont, with its very impressive 3 level viaduct, 52 m tall built in 1856 (a must for photographers), The fortified town of Langres was a good day out as we were able to walk around the ramparts which encircle most of the town. The town itself is of interest, there is a very helpful information centre and a welcome Salon de Thé in the town centre. The Charles de Gaulle memorial and Museum was probably our most favourite attraction and well worth a visit. There are some magnificent views across from the site across the town and beyond, if you go on a sunny day as we did. We drove into the town of Chatillon sur Seine and went to the museum where the treasure of Vix is its main attraction, dating back 2600 years . It includes a huge bronze vase, 1.5 metres high and discovered in 1953. The town itself is also worth a walk round.

We would recommend La Belle Époque, the restaurant in Chateauvillain. We had a very good lunch there on our last day, Jonathan kindly booked a table for us. We would certainly recommend this gite to others, indeed it is probably one of the best we have stayed in. We can't leave out Circe, the friendly Labrador who was a perfect host and entertained us with her antics and her singing in 'tune' with the church bells!

Fabulous gite, fabulous holiday

  • 5 of 5

Warm reception from Sarah and Jonathan, and a lovely glass of champagne by the pool on our arrival, a perfect start! The Gite was extremely well equipped, probably the best we have ever stayed in. Sarah and Jonathan were extremely accommodating, but also remained unobtrusive. We spent a day visiting the nearby Charles De Gaulle Museum and then went to the Charles Clement Champagne house as at 1530 they do an English speaking tour. The champagne tasting was well worth it, and prices were reasonable. We decided to take a trip to Paris, catching the train from Troyes. The journey to Troyes took 1 hr and the train approx 90 mins. We spent a wonderful day in Paris taking in the major sights, and were still home at the gite by around 10pm. Definitely worth considering. We had a wonderful couple of days relaxing by the pool and doing a couple of 20km bike rides, around some of the surrounding villages. The countryside is truly stunning, and the French are certainly more considerate to cyclists than at home. We were sad to leave as we felt there was a lot more we could have done, Nigloland was close by and we didn't make it there, but from previous reports would say it would be worth it, and you can kennel your dog there for 5 euros. I think trips to Langres and Dijon would be high on my agenda next time. Overall a simply wonderful holiday and we really cannot recommend the gite enough. Congratulations to Sarah and Jonathan for creating a simply wonderful holiday home.

Car: recommended

Situated in a rural village in the Champagne / Burgundy borders, in gently rolling countryside with open farmland and mixed forest, this corner of France is largely undiscovered by tourists and is ideal for walking and cycling.

Nearby there are Champagne houses where you can taste delightful Champagnes to rival the well known brands. Just a 15 minute drive away is Colombey les Deux Eglises, the home of Charles de Gaulle with a magnificent new museum. The medieval city of Troyes is less than hour's drive. Slightly further afield is the city of Dijon, famous for its cuisine and architecture . Closer to home you can visit the atelier of Pierre-Auguste Renoir at Essoyes, or discover the secrets of Voltaire and Emilie du Chatelet at the exquisite Chateau at Cirey sur Blaise.

For the younger at heart the highly recommend theme park of Nigoland is also close by. Fancy a day trip to Paris and climbing the Eiffel Tower? Well, with an early start, its just two hours by train from the station at nearby Bar sur Aube.
