Charente Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

Self-catering, heated private pool, 9 bedrooms grounds

La Sauzade is a beautiful country house, built in the 18th century, within walking distance of the historic village Aubeterre-sur-Dronne. The house is intended to be my home rather than just a holiday let and every detail has been chosen with that approach in mind.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable. Nearly all of the rooms look over the front lawn and swimming pool.

The ground floor consists of a large kitchen with substantial (2 m diameter) table, sitting room or family room, entrance hall, dining room, library. Behind the dining room and library is a down stairs bedroom with dressing room, stone fireplace, and its own bathroom. (Bedrooms are described below).

The house is furnished with antique furniture, as well as a wide screen Sony TV, separate TV, two play stations, DVD player, impressive DVD collection, table tennis, etc.

I am now taking bookings for weeks in 2014. If you are interested in booking during the summer holidays (or half term) in 2014 I strongly recommend that you book now.

A touch of class in the French countryside.

We four couples enjoyed delightful accommodation for a week at La Sauzade. Two of the bedrooms were quite grand, all were generously sized and each had a stylish bathroom. The two living rooms were handsome with beautiful sofas and antique furniture so all quite special just as the photo suggests. The house is very roomy and set in a tranquil location with lots of wildlife and yet just a few minutes walk up the hill to Aubeterre.

At the house, we made good use of the pool and the table-tennis table and hired canoes locally to explore the pretty river Dronne. Aubeterre itself is a delight and there is a good choice of restaurants with seating in the square; we also liked the Taverne's outdoor terrace and the Brasserie's duck burger with foie gras topping is not to be missed. Oysters from the local market were another treat.

Aubeterre is a gem and so is La Sauzade!

Beautiful, relaxing French manor house

La Sauzade is a wonderful house – lots of room, as described, all beautifully kept and spotless when you arrive. The garden and setting are delightful. The pool and its area is magnificent and – great plus this – kept clean and safe without chlorine!

In fine weather, meals on the south-west facing terrace are delightful; one tip: the access is either through the garden or up a staircase within the house, so putting everything required for the meal into the shopping carriers you get from French supermarkets is a good, safe way to carry them.

There’s plenty to do if the weather is not up to pool activities, barbecues and sun-lounging. The house is well stocked with games, Play Station 3, DVDs, ping pong table etc and the surrounding countryside, walks and places to visit will keep you well entertained.

Aubeterre is a really dinky French village, with castle (ruined), fascinating monolithic church – must see, and many attractive little shops and businesses. The Hotel de France provides good meals, and there are several other delightful eating places both in the village and within a short drive. Our particular favourites are the Château restaurant in Chalais and the Restaurant de Domaine des Vignes at St Romain.

In the house you will find a comprehensive list of places to visit, which all live up to expectations. Market types and days in the environs of La Sauzade are listed as well, but the supermarkets in Châlais and Riberac are excellent and good value too. Aubeterre’s food shops are perfectly adequate, with two excellent boulangeries, if you want to forage in walking distance, and the butcher stays open till 7 or 8pm, and there’s an oyster market on Sundays.

Charming manor house

We stayed at La Sauzade in February 2009 and had a wonderful time. The house is charming, beautiful and very homely. Plenty of space to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The large fireplaces and woodburners are lovely in the wintertime, and the house was very well stocked with firewood! Thoroughly recommended!

A great holiday house

We stayed in La Sauzade in September 2009- two families with children and a couple. There was ample space and the facilities were excellent. So much so that the couple had two bedrooms in the house as well as the cottage to choose from as the families were, effectively, installed in separate wings of this very substantial house.

For September, when the summer heat is just starting to ebb, having a heated swimming pool was wonderful. It meant that the children (one of whom was only 8 months) could stay in the pool for a long time.

The grounds are beautiful and well tended. The facilities of a high standard and the linen from the owner's specialist high-class linen company. The local agent was very helpful.

Overall a holiday let to be wholly recommended with no complaints at all.

La Sauzade is within walking distance of Aubeterre, one of Les plus beaux villages de France (this is, apparently, an official recognition rather than my own assessment).

The village has everything you might need for a relaxing French holiday including a range of restaurants and bars, post office, bakers, weekly market, bank, hairdresser, etc, as well as various craft shops celling local ceramics and jewellery.

Aubeterre is mostly built of stone and reflects the popular perception of an idyllic French village; there are 2 medieval churches, including one built from a single piece of stone which is the largest monolithic church in Europe.

During the summer there is a river beach in the village, with canoes, bicycles for hire and horse riding.

The house is also within easy driving distance of numerous famous towns and sights such as Bergerac, Surat, Cognac, and countless pretty villages.

  • There are 6 bathrooms and in addition a couple of separate stalls. The main bathrooms (i.e. bathroom 1, 2, 4 and the ground floor bathroom) were all refurbished in 2010. We used a number of suppliers. The hand painted tiles are from Marlborough Tiles (bathroom 4 and ground floor bathroom) and (bathroom 1) Douglas Watson. The stone (bathrooms 2 and 4) is from Stonells. Towels are provided (these are from Peter Jones): each adult should get a bath sheet and a hand towel, and also a towel for the pool. Each child gets the same but a bath towel rather than a bath sheet.

  • There are 9 bedrooms: 7 in the house and 2 in the adjacent cottage. Of these 9 bedrooms there are 5 with double beds (i.e. suitable for an adult couple), 3 with pairs of single beds (i.e. suitable for a couple of children or single adults), and on bedroom (bedroom 4) which has both a double bed and a single bed in it. The beds and mattresses (save 2) are from Litvinoff and Fawcett and were purchased recently. The bed linen on the adult beds is from lindolino, i.e. pure linen. The children's beds have cotton. Duvets, mattress covers, and pillows are from Peter Jones (some of the children's duvets are from Ikea). The larger bedrooms all have somewhere to sit and read or write post cards. There are numerous chests of drawers, wardrobes etc. There are also 2 cots.

The house is let for parties of up to 15 so the facilities are intended to cater for approximately that number. This assumes a typical family group of say 6-8 adults, and the remainder children of various ages. The dining room is intended to sit say 8 adults whereas the kitchen can sit a much larger group. Daily cleaning, etc, can be provided at cost.
