About the property

Fantastic Harbor Front Home , Dogs Allowed, Beach, dock, canoe, kayak, Hghspeed, fir

Situated on the harbor, overlooking Bass Harbor's comings and goings of the local lobster men and yachtsmen, this historic village offers Thurston's famous restaurant ,that you can walk to in 3 minutes, a quaint village and private beach. This harbor is famous on Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park, for being the most photographed and painted working harbors in Maine. The famous Bass Harbor lighthouse is only 5 minutes away. Bar Harbor is a 15 min drive to the other side of the island. Kayak right from this oceanfront home, or just relax on the many decks and enjoy the view. New to the home is a fire pit and renovated kitchen. Great gourmet kitchen with local granite used.

Fire-pit, canoe and tandem kayak are also offered ... Lots of decks for your private use

Private floater on the shore as well for your use- please bring everything back up each night - due to high tides and winds.

We offer a fenced in yard for the pups and allow multiple dogs. No cats please. Each dog is the required to pay the fee of 125 each for the entire stay. Multiple dogs discounts offered.

Bar Harbor is easy to get to- generally about 15-20 minutes unless behind a lobster boat - or road construction.. This is the quiet side but with alot more to do .. ( since this town is not selling t-shirts )

This oceanfront/shore front home offers beautiful views of Cadillac Mountain and the working harbor all day. Photograph the many artists and photographers coming to this spot to capture Maine's beauty.

This is a great find in America's favorite coastal Maine (Bernard) destination. The home offers a fireplace, a great place to read, windows overlooking the harbor from the living room, or take a walk through the fishing village. Charming architectural details, attractive furnishings, a fenced in yard, and lovely flowers make this a wonderful spot for your stay. ! This home is right on the ocean with steps going down for your exploring, plus a fenced in yard, and gardens. The large yard is great for children and dogs. The home has been freshly painted in 2015 and currently the entire home has been renovated.

An easel is on site, for the artistic ones. An office area overlooks the harbor is equipped with high speed internet, and printer/ copier for those who need to stay in touch. This home also has excellent cell phone coverage for many providers. Call today, we can help you book the best activities as well...the only luxury home on the island...that really serves you..We are Maine Registered Guides and really know the area...

Many of the homes on our island cannot receive cell phone coverage, you need to ask before arriving for your convenience.

This home is within 2-5 minutes of the trails in Acadia National Park where you can enjoy biking, hiking, running, kayaking, or mountain climbing. Spend your week enjoying nature by day and curling up to the fireplace at night. Come to the Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor and see what Bernard and Bass Harbor Retreat has to offer..

About Leslie Becker

I am a Maine Registered Guides and know this island very well. I love living here and being able to use the home when I can. The beauty and surroundings are wonderful especially if you are active. I use to have a home in Bar Harbor- but found the noise and t-shirts for sale a bit overwhelming.. This town offers more activities and more local things to do - if that is your style from the art shop/homes, to Thurstons, famous - last lobster pound locally owned and operated in Maine

Why Leslie Becker chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

hiking, biking, etc, acadia national park, plus I am a Maine Registered Guide and live and work can paddle every day- please do not get in the way of the lobstermen and women they have the right away. Make sure you have wet suits in Maine- the temp of the water never gets above about 45 in the summer - so do not fall in ! Best to be ACA OW here - due to our strong tides and more

What makes this house unique

watching real Maine, the lobstermen, the harbor, hike , bike, cross country skiing, running trails, acadia national park..

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for the view from the deck and the peacful sounds around the home. Our two Brittany Spaniels loved running from the front to the back. We have hiked everyday. There are so many places to go & so many different hikes from easy to difficult, obviously the dogs have slept well at night! We also climbed the Beech Mt. -beautiful sights from the top.

Beautiful views, comfortable house

  • 5 of 5

It's right on the water so you can fish or launch a canoe from the dock. Beautiful views of the harbor and the boats coming and going. The house was clean and comfortable. It's a bit of a drive from the main part of Acadia, but the flip side is that it's nice to be out of the bustle. It was a very relaxing location and we would definitely come back.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying... and taking such great care of the home. We would love to have you back. Yes we know- there are short cuts to Bar harbor, but the home is surrounded by Acadia- 4 of the most photographed hikes are within 3 miles of this home ... One is the Bass Harbor Lighthouse, the other one is the trail right past the lighthouse - there have many a great shot that comes on every calendar and movies made from those 2.. Echo lake is great for swimming- in Acadia - 5 miles away. The other photo shot is the western mountains- take the trail across from Echo lake- you can see all entire end of the island out to sea - it is wonderful.. also all the nature cruise boats depart from bass harbor- so best to stay close in this area if you like nature, which it sounds like you did ....I hope you were able to see all these wonderful places of Acadia, if not- come back in fall- spectacular colors then .

Wonderful retreat

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely loved staying at this Bass harbor retreat. The house was perfect for what we were looking for ... relaxation all the amenities necessary. We were regulars at the lobster shack down the street and we did a lot of grilling out back. All in all, it was a great few days away from the bustle of city life. Looking forward to coming back!

GREAT location.

  • 4 of 5

The house is situated on a quiet harbor with beautiful views. The interior is rustic, yet very well appointed with beautiful new appliances (including dishwasher, French door refrigerator and large capacity front load washer & dryer!) and updated bathrooms. Everything you need is provided, from linens to dishes, cookware to dish and laundry detergent. Just bring your clothes and you're all set.

The only reason I didn't rate it 5 star is the exterior. The blue exterior paint is peeling and the deck is not in good shape, although the newer deck railings are nice. Be sure to wear shoes on the deck because there are loose splinters of wood. The outdoor table and chairs on the lower deck level are heavily worn and half painted. Because of the dry conditions prior to and during our visit, the lawn was a bit overgrown and the insect population was high, making it difficult to enjoy the outdoors. This was obviously a weather issue that impacted our trip that is not controllable by the owner and is not intended as criticism of the home itself.

While visiting, be sure to take advantage of the free area shuttle sponsored by LL Bean. There's a convenient stop at the red store around the corner that will take you anywhere in the area that you need to go.

I'd like to make a constructive comment to the owner regarding the instructions left for guests. It did not feel very welcoming to read more than once about the service call fees that would be assessed if the TV was inadvertently left on the wrong mode or there were issues with the fireplace or appliances. The same applies to missing robes. From what I've read in other reviews, guests have left your home in great shape, as we did. Providing you've spelled out these details in the rental agreement, I don't believe it's necessary to stress the potential penalties in your instructions. Again, this is meant as a constructive comment that I hope you'll consider but did not impact our 4 days at your lovely home.

Owner's Response: Not sure who you are staying here, please next time leave a name . Thanks for staying- the home is repainted every 2 years - this is the hard weather north east- the shingles dry fast and paint seems to peel alot quicker here than any other home I own - ie: in the other states. The deck was repainted this year- it wears down by august each year- but boards were replaced again 2 years ago -as well as all railings.. paint just goes quickly here due to harsh winter conditions - ( if you are a painter move to this island painters cannot keep up with homes- we book them 3 years ahead ) as far as the notes- you kept it nice - but ironically when there were no notes ( or reminders ) we are accused of not having them or helping them be reminded - so I realize it is hard to keep everyone happy - someone will think notes are too much- you are the very first one to complain in about 10 years here- so guess the odds have been great so far...The robes, and septic notes are in the lease by the way and are the same notes as in all the homes located in Maine rental homes. ... Maine is also a state where pesticides are not allowed on water/ oceanfront- so yes there is the off chance of a fruit fly ( at least there are no black flies here on the coast- like there are on all the lakes in maine- hence why people come to the shore.. )

Idyllic setting for family getaway

  • 5 of 5

We fell in love with this house and its setting! Everything was absolutely perfect, from the new kitchen appliances to the nautical decor, comfy beds, and gorgeous views. Walking around the corner to Thurston's Lobster Pound for dinner was a treat. Owner Leslie seems to have thought of every detail, including kayaks and luxurious robes. We appreciated being on the quiet side of the island in contrast to the crowds we found in the Bar Harbor side of Acadia. I have a feeling this won't be our only stay at this lovely home. PS. We recommend picking up delicious sandwiches from nearby Saltmeadow Farm to take for a picnic on Ship Harbor trail.

Beautiful and Relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

The house is beautiful and well kept. It provided everything you could need or want. The area is quiet and relaxing but not far from Southwest Harbor. This was the perfect place to relax and unwind but close to great hikes and the waterfront provided great kayaking. We all loved it!
