AREA: Sintra is well known for its historic buildings, palaces and beautiful gardens.
The Pena Palace is situated on top of the Sintra mountain next to the Moorish Castle.
It can be reached by car, bus, horse drawn carriage or on foot! It is a very steep climb and only the very fit should attempt to walk!
The town itself is a very popular tourist area and has many places of interest and a tourist office.
Cascais, Estoril and Lisbon provide all that you may require in the way of shops, museums, historic
buildings, night-life and a casino.
Further north the Mafra palace and the fishing port of Ericeira are worth a visit.
Between Guincho and Adraga beaches lies the most westerly point of Europe- Caba da Roca. A monument by the lighthouse marks the point.
ATLANTIC COAST: The Atlantic coast provides wonderful surfing and boarding.
Some of the Portuguese championships are held along these beaches.
Several are easily accessible and have very good facilities including cafe/bars and excellent seafood restaurants.
The beaches at Praia Grande and Praia Macas have swimming pools open to the public.
We had a fantastic family time with our 3 kids. Everybody in the family loved it. The house is just perfect, cosy, warm with lovely terraces, plants and flowers and very well decorated. You just feel you are at the end of the world, even with a rainy weather, and at the same time well integrated within the village. So quiet and charming. Real Portugal.
I highly recommend it for any season.
Thank you so much
Robert's cottage is gorgeous. The village is very sweet and well located (you'll need a car) for the many sights of Sintra. Highly recommended - we loved it.
We had a wonderful holiday in the Casa da Encosta in Colares. A beautiful house, fully equiped, lovingly decorated and furnished. The flowers, the terraces, the views on the valley, the friendly help from the village people: we hope to come back here someday!
this is a lovely place to stay in a very picturesque area. The views from the 4 terrace areas are gorgeous and you can follow the sun all day. There is everything you need to live like a local a fully equipped kitchen to cook up your produce from the local market . Only 10mins from sintra and beautiful beaches by car and access to lisbon by train means great variety staying in Panedo. I fell in love with the place im coming back next year.
Time goes by and we didn't tell you the good vibes we had in your so charming cottage in Penedo last June. Everything was perfect. The kind of place in which we want to live and never leave... Congratulations for the generosity we guess behind your art of living, to the delight of all.
With our warmest thanks,
Anne Marie, Emmanuèle and Mario
I have stayed at Casa da Encosta twice - once in high summer and once in the winter - and both times were magical. This lush green part of the Portuguese coast is a lovely place to stay any time of the year, with crashing ocean surf, forest walks and loads of weird and interesting old castles and houses to look around on a rainy day.
Casa da Encosta is right on top of the hill in the beautiful village of Penedo, next to the old church. It is a classic little whitewashed village in the Sintra hills, and Casa da Encosta is probably the most idyllic cottage in the whole village.
The position is perfect for views across the forested hillsides, with occasional views of the Atlantic peeping over the horizon. The cottage is well equipped and beautifully decorated in a rustic Portuguese style. It is the perfect base for anyone who wants to live a little of the traditional Portuguese life in a relaxing environment.
It has a very grand master bedroom with en suite bathroom, a separate shower room, and a snug sitting room with wood fire. Downstairs, a traditional tiled kitchen is deliciously cool in summer with all the utensils and kitchenware to rustle up a Portuguese feast.
Outside, there is a lovely little terrace with a stone table and much greenery that is the perfect place to while away a summer afternoon on the rigours of a good book and a glass of Vinho Verde. I hope others enjoy it as much as we did!
PENEDO is in a UNESCO Conservation Area, two miles from the Atlantic Coast and six miles from the ancient town of Sintra.
The cosmopolitan towns of Cascais and Estoril are a short drive away, offering good seafood restaurants, shopping and beaches.
Lisbon, Portugals capital city, is only a 30 minute drive, and easily accessible by train from Sintra or Cascais.
The larger villages of 'Colares' and 'Almocageme' are within walking distance and have restaurants, shops, bars, cafes chemists, banks etc.
The village itself has a small shop with an extensive range of groceries ,vegetables, beer and wine and an excellent cafe/bar(owned by 'Paulo'- he speaks some English!), church, bandstand and village square.
There is a Restaurant in the village, located next to the cafe and provides excellent typical Portuguese food at very low prices.( 3 courses 5-8 euros including wine) Open lunchtimes 12 - 3.00, closed Sundays.
