Local activities: FISHING
You may buy a fishing licence in the local stationers that will give you 15 days permission to fish anywhere on the River Dordogne. The cost of this is just 30 Euros and there are many beautiful spots to choose from where you may take the family for a picnic while you are busy catching the bar-b-Que for your evening meal!
The area boasts many different breeds of birds and several of our enthusiastic guests have returned from trips very excited at having spotted unusual species that are not widely found in UK.
HOT AIR BALLOON
Trips of varying times are available to see the area from the air. There are several pick up points and prices are inexpensive. Why not take a birds eye look at your holiday venue? A very different way to see the beautiful countryside around.
KAYAKING AND CANOEING
On the edge of Le Fleix is the quayside where you may hire kayaks and canoes. You have the choice of a 1, 2 or 6 hour trip on the river and the company who hire out the canoes will take you, with your canoe, life jacket and picnic if you have one, up the river to your starting point. They see you safely off and drive back to their base where you have left your car. You make your way down the river, dropping the canoe off and picking up your car at the end of your trip. This is a really fun day for all the family.
5 minutes drive will take you to Fougerolles where there is a private airfield from which you may book a gliding trip or even lessons for the more adventurous. Once again, this is inexpensive and prices depend on your choice of trip or lesson.
LAC DE GURSON
The Gurson lake is found on an 18 ha domain and features two large lakes (one for fishing) aquatique toboggans, pedalos, mini-golf, horse rides, tennis, kids games and a picnic area. Located at Carsac de Gurson.

Would happily recommend this property. The gites are clean and comfortable with lots of space. Location is tranquil with beautifull views, swimming pool plus lovely walks straight from the door..
A car is essential for shopping and sight seeing with driving being easy as roads are quite.
Ste Foy La Grande is a lovely market town and Dordogne river is only 10-15 mins away
Will definitely go back again.
We just loved Starling Lodge. The pictures don't do the property or the gardens justice. It was perfect for our party made up of 4 families with children ageing from 18 months to 9 years old.
The property was spotlessly clean on arrival with a welcome basket which was appreciated by all. After a well rested night we work to glorious sunshine and our holiday could truly begin.
There's plenty on site to keep all entertained from the swimming pool to badminton, for the more energetic members of our group.
Two musts, if you can drag yourself away, is canoeing on the Dordogne and a visit to the Saturday market in Ste Foy.
A big thanks goes to Cordelia who with all the little extras made our holiday bliss. Highly recommend Starling Lodge to all ages!
We had a very enjoyable, fun and relaxing stay at Starling Lodge.
Starling was as described – attractive, clean, comfortable, well and thoughtfully equipped and in a very quiet rural, non touristy area though within easy reach of Bergerac, Montbazillac etc. The grounds are very pleasant and peaceful. Our family group of 14 was easily accommodated. Daily “maintenance” of the pool etc. was quietly and efficiently carried out.
It was very hot during our stay and the veranda where we ate all our meals, the excellent pool and the many shady trees were most welcome. In spite of the heat the family made use of the all “sporting facilities” including the football area! The bicycles were also used, after a bit of oiling and brake checking, but if you plan to cycle you might like to bring your helmets. The members of our family who went out found the roads quiet and the local scenery, through the vineyards and by the river, very pleasant.
The only “down” was that because of the heat during our stay, two of the upstairs bedrooms which have very small windows were extremely hot at night and the fans provided just couldn’t cope.
Also, as we ate outside all the time it did not affect us but, if we had needed to dine indoors it would have been difficult to seat a group like ours together in one room.
No other issues or omissions!
We arrived to temperatures of 40c so the large private pool was a most welcome relief. The two properties connect through one of the downstairs bedrooms, but both properties have separate external access if this is a propblem. It wasn't an issue for us. Both properties are comfortably furnished. There are some low beams, especially upstairs in Starling Lodge. This may not be to some peoples liking. Being 6 ft 5 I didn't fancy sleeping up there especially after a few glasses, but it was perfect for the children, and the bedrooms , once in, were lovely.
The properties would benefit from either aircon or ceiling fans. I believe Adrian is looking at the latter, which will be beneficial for upstairs, especially during the high season. In fairness there were plenty of stand alone fans. For the downstairs bedroom these were not required, during the second week, as night time temperatures were pleasant, but not overpowering.
The lounge areas were both comfortable, with Freeview on large flat screen tv's. There was a pool table in Starling Lodge, which went down well with the kids.
There is WiFi although the signal was weak on the patio when we arrived. One of our party installed signal boosters which means this won't be a problem going forward.
The outside space and facilities were fantastic, with everything available that you could think of set in 16 glorious acres. Even if the 3 properties were rented separately there is plenty of space and privacy for all. The mountain bikes were really handy as well for a morning cycle to the local bakers (5 mins).
We recommend canoeing down the Dordoyne, which was great fun. Golf at Vigiers was nearby and resonable priced. Fairways and green were both in good condition. We played early, which was cheaper and meant temperatures were perfect. We made up a 4 ball with the proprieter (Adrian) who, by the way is good value for his 12 handicap!
We had a fabulous stay. The beds were comfortable, facilities near faultless, and the setting stunning. I would not hesitiate to recommend this property.
Our extended family ranged from age 2 to age 75 and everyone was happy. Starling Lodge was a relaxed, rambling farmhouse where we were able to all be together, but also each had our own space. The outdoor area was large with many of things to do right on the property - great swimming pool with lots of lounge chairs, soccer field, trampoline and play area for the children, badminton, boules - you name it. The place was very well stocked with games and puzzles etc for the children indoors as well. The weather was hot and sunny while we were there and we ate out on the large veranda every night.
The owners were in residence next door and could not have been nicer. They cheerfully helped us with any questions or small problems we had and never complained about our late dinners. They even had some pizzas in the freezer for us to eat on the night of our arrival. We stayed 2 weeks and loved it.
Having spent the last 3 years going to Starling Lodge in Le Fleix, I have found a place to relax and explore at my own pace. The property is always spotless and the owners are always so obliging. They recommend the best places to visit and restaurants also local markets which I found so helpful. The property is set in a lovely setting with a pool well laid out gardens fish pond and play area for children.
There are plenty of lovely places to visit Bergerac is only 25 mins by car and well worth a visit. Having spent evenings relaxing in the gardens with a book, glass of wine or just soaking up the peace and watching the sun-set, I always feel I have had a great holiday. Having recommended to several of my friends this is the place to go. Great accommodation good customer service all in all well worth a visit.
Le Fleix village is just over 1km and has a small supermarket, post office, petrol station, 2 bakers, butcher, bar/restaurant and 2 hair dressers. It's a pleasant walk or you may borrow one of our bicycles if you are feeling not quite so energetic. Ste Foy La Grande, a charming old bastide town set on the River Dordogne with delightful town centre, is 7km and has a superb Saturday market, larger supermarkets and a multitude of other shops and restaurants. Bergerac is 17 kms and is also an old bastide town set on the river Dordogne and also with a picturesque town centre surrounded by restaurants. There are many shops, boutiques and supermarkets here too. The airport is just outside the town and is less than 20 minutes from our house. GOLF 15 minutes drive from Le Fleix is the superb golf course of Les Vigiers. This is an 18 hole course and is testing enough to satisfy regular golfers but not too tough for the lesser player. Green fees are very reasonable.
Other Activities: hot air ballooning, Canoeing
Golf: 15 minutes drive from Le Fleix is the superb golf course of Les Vigiers. This is an 18 hole course and is testing enough to satisfy regular golfers but not too tough for the lesser player. Green fees are very reasonable and you may hire clubs and buggy.
Les Vigiers also has a swimming pool, a bistro-style restaurant and the more expensive restaurant for a special night out in the chateau. There is also a health spa and fitness salon so that the ladies can enjoy pampering themselves whilst their menfolk fight it out on the course.
