About Victoria and Peter
Nearly 29 years ago Peter Hobday who was helping to present the Today programme on Radio 4, London, when came across an article about properties for sale in Italy, amazing bargains the article said! So Peter rang his wife Victoria and in no time they were ringing estate agents searching for the 'Italian dream'. They found it, Casa del Lauro. It was a complete ruin set upon a wheat sown hillside surrounded by olive trees. They restored it, and through the years created an architecturally designed garden. There were many ups and downs with trees being moved on a regular basis from one spot to another! Now that Peter has more time they try to be there on and off for about three months of the year. It is their home in Italy.
Victoria and Peter purchased this Villa in 1988
Why Victoria and Peter chose Città della Pieve
Architecturally it is in the classic Italian farmhouse style, long and low with pale tiles on the roof. They could not have got nearer to the Italian dream house. It is situated in the cultural heart of Italy, within a drive from the fascinating Renaissance towns of Florence, Sienna, San Gimigniano, Gubbio and many more...and on the door step of the beautiful lake Trasimeno, and the castellated lake side town of Castiglione del Lago.
What makes this Villa unique
Casa del Lauro is now a fabulous farmhouse/villa, thoughtfully designed to combine contemporary facilities with country house elegance. It is kept in perfect decorative condition and the spacious garden with endless lawns is well maintained by Silvio the gardener. The villa overlooks it's own Olive Grove and 33 cypress trees which are pruned every two years. It is set among gentle rolling hills, with 360 degree views of pretty little Umbrian and Tuscan hill top towns such as Montepulciano, Citta' della Pieve and the old Etruscan town of Chuisi.

Beautiful private setting and amazing views, beautiful garden.
We had a lovely week here. Victoria was very helpful with all the details beforehand. The property is set in a stunning position with views of the rolling hills around. It’s close to lots of beautiful local towns and also close enough to the train station in Chiusi, where you can take a fast train to Rome in an hour, if you want to venture further afield. We made full use of the outdoor space and pool when we were at the villa. The indoors is very comfortable and tastefully furnished in keeping with a restored older property, but with all the things you need, and a smart tv too!
We had such a lovely time. The house is beautiful and well-equipped (even large pasta pans and a Le Creuset which were really appreciated!).
The pool has the most amazing views; the house a very comfortable retreat. We enjoyed the smart TV and could screen mirror all our downloaded TV and films easily so we had some fun film nights.
The location is perfect for exploring and also near some great restaurants - the recommendations were excellent.
We were so sad to leave.
Lovesick over this villa!
My family of 5 just returned from our glorious stay at Casa del Lauro. I knew from the reviews and the photos online that this property would provide us with a lovely home base for our travels. What I didn't realize was how much the actual experience would surpass my expectations.
This spectacular farmhouse has been lovingly restored with attention to every last detail. Panoramic views of the stunning grounds and countryside can be seen though every window and the location is centrally located allowing for various day trips. While it was certainly difficult to drag ourselves away from the villa, we were able to take easy trips to Siena, Orvieto, Bagnoregio, Assisi, Cascata delle Marmore and Lake Trasimeno, which is only 20 minutes by car.
Each morning our kids enjoyed time at the beautiful pool and breakfast on the shaded patio. I can tell you that no one was happy when it was time to leave. We are truly lovesick over Casa del Lauro and we look forward to returning one day to this exceptional property. Thank you to Victoria and Peter who were our most gracious hosts.
What a brilliant review you gave us,,,,,,,,, mille grazie!
Peter and I are so pleased you and your family had such a lovely time. You are very observant and appreciative (thanks) for all the lovely things we have done to the farmhouse over the years; creating a super modern home in an old, characterful Italian farmhouse.
You may have noticed the oak wall - brackets in the dining room and salotto made by The Mouseman. Robert Thompson, wood carver extraordinaire, in Yorkshire. He is famous for his mouse that he carves beautifully on every item of furniture he makes, whether it be a church pew or a wall sconse like ours. (you may have gathered I am from Yorkshire!).
You certainly traveled around to lots of interesting places,,,,,,,,,,, such a benefit they are all so close by leaving time to stretch out by the pool among the cypress trees, the flowering oleander and the olive grove.
It was nice to chat too while you were there, you were such friendly people and your love and joy of Italy shone through.
A huge thanks for your stay with us.
Simply Stunning - a perfect location and property to relax and soak up the breath taking views.
We stayed in Casa del Lauro in August 2018 for 6 days. Everything about the stay was perfect. the property is well equipped to ensure you have everything you need throughout your stay. The furnishings are comfortable and in keeping with the overall property style, but also modern enough to cater for all ages and tastes. The most alluring thing about the property is without doubt the endless views - simply breath taking. The children loved the pool and spent most days playing in it whilst the adults enjoyed the sunshine, views and local wine!
The location of the property is also perfect allowing us to visit Lake Tassimeno and the charming medieval town of Cortona on the Tuscany border.
A truly hidden gem and the perfect base for a very relaxing holiday.
Thanks very much for your marvellous review.
You're right about the wines from the choice of local Chiantis to the great Vino Nobile of Montepulciano,,,,,, great prices too!
We hope you managed to seek out one or both of the fresh fish restaurants. In particular Ristorante Da Lauro in Citta della Pieve,,,,,,,,, where they serve vino sfuso (draft wine). And you saw the beautiful paintings by Perugino in the Cattedrale,,,,, he was born in the pretty hill top town.
Many thanks for choosing us for your holiday,,,,,,,, we hope you will come and stay with us again when next visiting friends and family.
Best wishes from Peter and me
Beautiful Italian house with stunning views
This place is simply beautiful,
it has a soul
The garden, the pool, the views,
the rooms will all remain as a beautiful memory in our mind!
Dear Ingeborg and Jan Hein
Thank you very much for your thoughtful review. This is our home in Italy and we are happy to hear you appreciated all the work and care that has gone into creating a very comfortable simply designed home.
We love gardens and have spent many years creating lawns, buying dozens of cypress trees and brightly colored oleander bushes over looking the pool and an olive grove,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, all designed to reflect quintessential Italy.
Best wishes Victoria and Peter
Luxurious villa with fantastic views
We are a family of four including two teenagers. We had a wonderful time here; we only wish it had been longer than a week. The villa is located in a very quiet area but shops are not far away; it's very clean, spacious and well equipped and the pool is a generous size. It is also homely rather than an impersonal holiday let and the sunsets looking over the pool are wonderful. Lots of lovely cities and towns within driving distance and Lake Trasimeno is not far if you fancy boating, kayaking, island hopping etc. but you would be equally happy just staying put. We wish we were still there
Dear Ian and Clare
Many thanks for taking the time to write a brilliant review. Lake Trasimeno is beautiful isn't it,,,,,,, swimming, restaurants, lovely walks along the lake shore and delicious ice-creams!
We're happy to hear you all had a great time and hope you will come and stay with us again another time.
Thank you very much for choosing Casa del Lauro for your holiday this year.
All the very best for the rest of the summer
Victoria and Peter
We are right in the midst of the cultural centre of Italy. Florence, Siena, Gubbio, Spoleto, Rome and Assisi are all within easy driving distance. Also a fantastic train and bus service from Chiusi. You can get a fast train to Rome, one hour and twenty minutes; and Florence, where it is very difficult to park in the city, under two hours.
Arezzo is well worth exploring. Principally the lengthy restoration work on, the Legend of the Cross, the famous cycle of frescoes by Piero della Francesca in the church of San Francesco, has at last been completed. Also the Antique Market of Arezzo, is held the first week-end of every month on Saturday and Sunday. Serenella, a colourful eating-house in Citta' della Pieve, a fascinating hilltop town 20 mins away. Good Umbrian cooking, even the local priest eats there. Plus many other interesting Attractions. Fashion Bargains are to be had at The Mall, in the village of Leccio, it is 1hr and 15 mins away by car. It is a collection of designer outlets selling surplus and out of season stock.
Other Activities: Various games: i.e. Scrabble, cards, Backgammon.
Golf: The nearest Golf Course is in Panicarola , about 5 miles away. It's a 9 holes golf course. The larger 18 hole golf course is nearer Perugia, about an hour away. We have been there and it looks very good.
