Jeremy Cay House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms + Den, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 7-8) + DOCK

'Spectacular!' 'Awesome!' 'Unique.' 'Beautiful.' 'Fun.' These are just a few of the words that have been used to describe the unspoiled natural setting for our vacation home, Sea Forest. Located on Cowpens, a small private island accessible by causeway, the house offers stunning views of marsh, creek and the Atlantic Ocean.

The island itself, with fifteen homes including ours, is situated just behind Edingsville Beach, an uninhabited barrier beach just north of Edisto Beach. The setting is secluded, relaxing, and peaceful.

Our home is designed to maximize enjoyment of its beautiful marsh and ocean views and abundant wildlife. The main level has an open floor plan with living area, dining room, kitchen, and master suite. In the summer you may enjoy the cool ocean breezes, or if you prefer, the air conditioning. In the colder months, the fireplace adds to the cozy comfort provided by central heating.

Large picture windows across the front and front-sides of the house provide unobstructed views of the ocean, creek and marshes. The outside deck provides a perfect seating area to enjoy the afternoon sea breezes while you watch the pelicans, great blue herons, egrets, wood storks and other shore birds fly overhead or feed in the marsh grasses a few feet away.

The back screened porch provides for panoramic views of the beautiful creek, marsh and gorgeous sunsets while you enjoy the peace and quiet. The additional fireplace on the porch provides the luxury of a cozy fire to gather 'round on chilly afternoons or evenings with friends and family, even when it's raining outside!

The master suite offers a large bedroom with a queen-sized bed, a deck overlooking the creek, and a bathroom with a walk-in shower. There are two bedrooms upstairs. One has a double bed and a small deck overlooking the creek and marsh. The other bedroom has a double and a single bed which is perfect for families with young children. There is also a fold-up cot for an additional guest.

A covered fixed pier with floating dock is on the creek behind the house. The dock provides additional 360-degree marsh/creek views and access to the creek for small boats (kayaks, jon boats, etc.), crabbing, fishing, and swimming, This is a wonderful swimming 'hole' and great for lazy afternoons spent relaxing in and on the water. There's a hammock to enjoy the breezes while you read or nap --- the perfect way to while away the hours on vacation.

The creek is navigable for small boats even at dead low tide (about 2 feet of water at the dock at low tide), and provides easy access to Edingsville Beach, Botany Bay Beach, and Frampton Inlet. (OWNER WILL ASSIST WITH LAUNCHING AND SECURING YOUR BOAT AT OWNER DOCK) Edingsville Beach has historic significance because it was the established beach community in the 1800's for the Edisto Island plantation owners until it was completely destroyed by the hurricane of 1893.

For the serious beachcomber, pieces of fine china and old wine bottles from the old Edingsville community can still be found on this beach today. Both Edingsville and Botany Bay Beaches are literally covered with numerous seashells and fossils, including sharks' teeth, and these beaches are prime locations for swimming, walking, sunning, and surf fishing. It is requested by creek property owners that jet skis not be used on the creek.

In addition to boat access to Edingsville Beach, one can walk from our home to the beach which is a distance of about a half mile through a private residential development. For other beach access, we also use the public path options at Edisto Beach.

Sea Forest is located about five miles from Edisto Beach with its restaurants, gift shops, grocery and hardware stores, golf course, tennis courts, churches, and special community events. It is about a forty-five minute drive south of romantic Charleston, SC, known for its outstanding gourmet restaurants, chic King Street shops, and historic sites and homes.

Yes, Sea Forest really is 'unique!' It's a comfortable home in an incredibly beautiful setting. There is lots to do and see, and yet it's so relaxing that you might not want to do anything at all!

About Mike Lumpkin

The Lumpkin Family has owned this property since purchasing the original home in 1953. That home was destroyed by fire in 1971. This newer home was built in 1980 and has been re-modeled twice since then. We love using it as a year round retreat from the too-hurried pace of our daily lives.

Mike Lumpkin purchased this house in 1953

Why Mike Lumpkin chose Edisto Island

The mystery and magic of Edisto Island has always been a draw for us. The privacy and isolation of this island community has been particularly rich for our lives.

What makes this house unique

The secluded location, along with the entertainment provided by nature and the spectacular views, provides an oasis conducive to relaxation. Here we can enjoy the truly rich pleasures of life. Some of the things we enjoy most are the peace and quiet...the birdlife (from painted buntings to pelicans)...the wildlife (porpoises, otters, deer) shelling...swimming... boating...fishing...crabbing...reading...napping. OWNER CAN SOMETIMES ASSIST WITH LAUNCHING AND SECURING YOUR BOAT AT THE DOCK--Jon boats and boats under 16' are ideal for this creek.

Guestbook comments from the owner

After months of moving, empty-nesting, and crisis-managing our aging parents, your home here welcomed us to much needed respite. It is so soothing to be surronded on two sides by the slow rhythms of the marsh tides, to sleep to the sound of breeze and surf, and to walk for hours along the beach. We too saw dolphins in the creek, giant horseshoe crabs, eagles and whooping crane. The bird life here is astonishing.

We read and wrote and talked-- even caught and ate some crab. The jon boat is lots of fun. The superb watercolors and pottery in your home attest to your own love of beauty. This is a beautiful place. We are blessed and refreshed for having been here.

  • 5 of 5

This rental was a lovely place to stay. The view was breathtaking and the surroundings were relaxing. Loved the constant breeze from the ocean. Everything was clean and enjoyed the decor. Wish I would have brought a golf cart....It would come in handy when going to the beach. Overall, It is a great place to visit!

wild but wonderful week

  • 5 of 5

My sister and I fell in love with the pictures, but were enchanted by the actual place. We were there during the recent historical rain. Although it saddened us to see the damage done by thw storm, we had a great adventure that week, watching the forces of nature.

The house itself couldnt be nicer. It has everything, views, both front and back, comfortable furniture, and the kitchen is well furnished.

I talked with Mike several times because of uncertainty about the weather, and he was so nice. He and Ellen came to check on the place after the storm, and they are both very gracious people.

I do hope to go back again.

The Best Place on Edisto!

  • 5 of 5

This is our family's second stay at Sea Forest and we will definitely be back. We've stayed in many houses over the 30 years we've been coming to Edisto and this is our favorite! It is in a gorgeous setting with magnificent views of the ocean, creek and marsh. The sea breezes are wonderful as are the deck chairs for viewing the marsh and ocean, and the hammock on the dock. The house is very comfortable, clean, and well furnished. Mike is a pleasure to work with. The short walk to the beach access is part of the fun, although probably not for families with young children. We ran and walked on the beach, found spectacular shells and sand dollars, and even found a piece of the old crockery from early Eddingsville. Such a special week. Thank you!

beautiful peaceful place even during a rare ice storm

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had never been to Edisto island and on the recommendation of our youngest daughter we decided to book a three day stop over on the island on our drive back from visiting family in Fla. We booked Sea Forest bc it sounded secluded and peaceful, just what we needed after a hectic visit for Gasparilla Festival in Tpa. The owner Mike was a delight to work with and we had no problem whatsoever finding and checking into this wonderful house. What I was not prepared for were the views everywhere the comfortable coziness of the house, the privacy, the feel of the area, and the fact that there was still a place that exists along the Atlantic Coast as pristine and untouched as this area of South Carolina. The first night my husband and I sat out on the deck outside of the new master bedroom and watched the tide come in and abundant wildlife in the winter marshes feed..there were herons and snowy headed pelicans, terns, and seagulls. We were the only humans around and as the sun set over the marsh the sky entertained us with brilliant colors and silence all around except for the distant sound of breaking waves on the nearby beach. After a great nights sleep in the ultra comfortable bedroom ..we awakened to driving rain in the form of ice pelting the decks and windows. We had been informed earlier of the impending winter storm and were worried about losing power. We were able to get into town where the friendly folks at the BiLo grocery many who had stayed on the island overnight bc of the storm, were friendly and welcoming..the folks at the Sea Cow an island favorite known for its belly warming breakfasts, a short way from the grocery, were serving a delicious hot breakfast! These are tough islanders who take storms in stride and do it with a friendly smile! We were beginning to really love this sea island even in the dead of winter. Back at the house we enjoyed a warm fire w wood bought from the Bilo . We heard that the bridge to the island was closed due to ice and we felt like we were castaways on a private island with ocean on one side and marsh on the other. We spent the day reading by the fire, cooking up sweet low country shrimp purchased from the eclectic little fish shack, Flowers, and enjoying the gorgeous views. The owners of Sea Forest have thought of every comfort imaginable from deep plush recliners for reading by the fire to old fashioned rockers in front of abundant windows with views to the ocean. Come to this home it is wonderful!!

Great holiday, wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at Sea Forest. The house is near the holiday town of Edisto Beach (well appointed, has everything you need), but is set on a secluded road alongside other holiday homes to the north of the town. The creek to the back of the house is wonderful - quiet, a great spot to watch birds and wildlife - and the views of the sea to the front are lovely. There is plenty to do within walking distance of the house (not least on long Eddingsville Beach). And a lot to explore in the surrounding area, with both Charleston and Savannah easily accessible.

The house is very well appointed and comfortable. It's very nicely decorated, as well as being very practical for families. The sea breezes acted as fantastic air conditioning (ours was a hot March week). And the owners were extremely nice to deal with.
