Portigliolo Villa Rental Photos and Description

5 chambres, 2 SDB, 1 salle d'eau, 4 toilettes - Maximum 11 people.

This five-bedroom villa was custom-built to provide spectacular panoramic views from both the wrap-around terrace and the large private pool in the garden. The unobstructed views from terraces go beyond the sandy local beach and rocky headlands of the coast, across the Bay of Ajaccio towards the majestic mountains that dominate the center of Corsica. Comfortably furnished and well-equipped, the villa’s Terrace Level has cathedral-ceiling living area and master bedroom suite that open onto covered and uncovered terraces. On the Garden Level below are the remaining 4 bedrooms that all open onto the garden with a large pool. A great family villa for up to 11 people. It is also well-suited for romantic rendezvous because the terrace level includes master bedroom with a private balcony; so a couple can enjoy living in a very spacious one bedroom. The villa is a 5 minute walk to the sandy beach at Portigliolo. This quiet, beautiful community on the southern tip of the Gulf of Ajaccio offers local tennis, boating and dining; just 17km to its main resort town Porticcio and 35km from Ajaccio Airport.

Unobstructed Panoramic Views: Views from Terrace: Sunsets across the sea to the Isles des Sanguinaire are spectacular. At night the lights of Ajaccio across the bay sparkle like a diamond necklace. Into June, the snowcapped peaks in the center provide an amazing backdrop as you sunbathe on the terrace enjoying windsurfing, sailing and larger boats taking safe harbor in our local cove. Even during peak season the contrasting bluies of the sea and the waves splashing on the rocky headlands just beyond our local sandy beach provide visual entertainment throughout the day.

About Adele Bozza

I am an American who lived in Europe for 20 years until I returned to New England in 2001. In 1989, we purchased land in Portigliolo and built U Castellu in 1991. Now that I live in USA, I enjoy sharing my wonderful Corsican home with others through rentals. It still remains my family holiday home. I come here twice a year in Late Spring and Early Autumn.

Adele Bozza purchased this villa in 1991

Why Adele Bozza chose Corse du Sud

We first visited Corsica in 1988 while living and working in London. I immediately fell in love with the island. During our first 2 weeks here, we searched for a villa to buy but soon realized we want to create OUR PLACE for our family and friends to enjoy. It was built with love for the island by local builders who appreciated that while we were strangers, we wanted a Corsican home; all materials are from the island including the grey-green granite fireplace.

What makes this villa unique

It is a family home, custom built for our vacation enjoyment. It is comfortable home that is well-equipped for adults and children. The views across the Golfe d'Ajaccio are even more spectacular than any photo I have taken. They still take my breath away each time I return. Because I love the island and have lived in England and USA, it offers some items that other French villas might not.

Property is looked after by my French neighbor from Bordeaux who retired here a few years ago. They are fluent in English but also understand the culture of Corsica. They are not employees but caring neighbors who want my home well-cared for and my guests happy.

Wonderfull location, great property and so friendly owner. Parfait pour famille

  • 5 of 5

Voir la version Francaise plus bas.

I was looking for a place which would accommodate my family from my 80 years old father to my 10 years old son. This was the perfect solution. The house is spacious, well equipped, the teenager could stay connected, the kitchen was perfect to cook for 8, the kids could play in the pool or walk to the beach. The location is both off the main traffic and close enough to have access to all shops and amenities. It is also close enough to be a base for day trip and cover most of South Corsica.

The playbook is very comprehensive and includes good suggestions for dining out. To top it, the owner is extremely responsive and very friendly.

This was just the perfect solution and definitely would come back.

Owner's Response: It makes me smile to hear about happy family celebrations held at our Corsican vacation home. When we first decided to rent U Castellu to others, we hoped "OUR home would be YOUR home during your stay". We have take good care of our villa over the past 25 years since we built it. That is because it is not a rental investment property but a home we share. A home needs to be lived in and loved to remain a cherished place. I love helping others to learn about my favorite island so they enjoy not just our home but also the wonders of this amazing Granite Island.

Lovely Villa. Amazing Views.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at U Castellu in July with our two children.

The villa is as described, very spacious with the most amazing views over the bay, in a beautiful part of Corsica - quiet, but close enough to town / supermarket when you need. It's very much a home, ie not corporate decor, but nicely furnished, with a very well equipped kitchen. The garden is not large as the villa is on a hillside, but very private, and gets the sun most of the day.

Following high winds, there were a couple of issues, and Adele was extremely responsive and helpful, and things were remedied quickly.

The location is great, and while the local beach is nice, and quiet, we found the beaches further north had nicer sand. There's a few nice local restaurants, especially Mico's down the road, which we were very impressed with. Also, do visit the amazing patisserie about 15 mins north facing the garage, which we only discovered on our last day sadly (or happily for our waistlines).

Overall we had a great stay, and would visit again.

Wonderful, as usual

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 8 (3 adults and 5 teen-agers) enjoyed for the third time a lovely two weeks at U Castellu. Everything was in good working order and we could concentrate on relaxing on the terrace and in the garden, enjoying the pool and the lovely view of the bay and exploring the beech and the island. In a way, U Castellu has become almost a "second home" for us. We know that everything (be it in the kitchen, in the rooms or in the laundry room) will be clean and well equipped and we appreciate Adele and her team's efficient and friendly effort.

Owner's Response: So happy to hear from returning guests and to know they feel so at home. it is our goal to make U Castellu be YOUR CORSICAN HOME while staying there. This group of 8 is two families reuniting each summer -- one living in London and the other USA. It is wonderful to hear from them during their 2 week stay and after. We do have a strong team of caretakers looking after our home so it is satisfying to have their efforts appreciated as well.

Views you'll remember the whole year

  • 5 of 5

This was the third time that my family and our friends (8 people total, of which 5 are children, including 4 15+ teens) stayed at U Castellu and it felt like coming home. The house is just the right size for our group (we could even fit in an extra kid if we had one), and the kitchen is well equipped. We had long, languorous dinners on the terrace every evening, watching the sun go down and the geckos come out.

The house itself is comfortable and breezy; it never gets too hot because of the location up on the cliff. The fact that the kids can walk alone down to the beach or the little shop for croissants is a big bonus for us, as it means adults can stay up at the house and read, lounge by the wonderful pool, or (alas) work.

From U Castellu we often venture out in different directions. Filitosa and Sartene can be reached in a couple hours in the south, and Ajaccio is about an hour or so north. There are lots of outdoor activities (e.g. an excellent zipline park and canyoning) in the Forest of Vero, about 20 minutes north of Ajaccio.

We'll keep our memories alive over the long Boston winter and hope to go back next year.

Villa is poorly maintained and dirty!

  • 1 of 5

We spent two weeks at U Castellu in July 2016, and we regret to report that the experience had been very disappointing. The house was very dirty – week/month-old stains, dust, dirt and spiderwebs everywhere (these spider webs are really big, so they are weeks-old, not newly spun during our stay), dirty floors on the terrace and stairs, week/month old stains on furniture, fixtures, appliances, walls, windows, glass panes, door handles and doors. In addition, the house is poorly maintained.

The owner is a very nice person and had been a good communicator throughout. Unfortunately, she ultimately failed to address the cleanliness issue even after I had alerted her of the situation. After my first email to her, she sent in her cleaning people to do the most superficial of cleaning (for half an hour), which did not fix the problem. I reported back to her that the cleaners did not do an adequate job, and asked to have them come back. Even though she agreed on the phone, she later emailed me that the cleaner and she decided that they would not clean again until we left.

After we checked out, the owner rebated us $200 as a cleaning adjustment. It is a nice gesture, but it was not enough to make up for the bad experience. Our Corsica holiday was severely marred by our very unpleasant stay at U Castellu.

Owner's Response: Our guest’s comments were disturbing because I encourage everyone to email or call me when they first arrive if anything isn’t to their liking. During all rentals, I check in by email and encourage guests to contact me if they have any questions or concerns because I want to ensure they have a wonderful experience. Over the 20 years of renting our Corsican vacation home, we have always strived to maintain our villa to a very high standard--investing in the structure, landscaping and pool as well as adding new decorative improvements each year. It is our vacation home that we visit at the beginning and end of each rental season to prepare it for our guests whom we hope will feel comfortable and at home during their stay. Unfortunately, this guest waited until the end of her first week to contact me to say our villa was not properly cleaned. Perceptions of cleanliness are subjective. I hope that anyone considering renting our vacation home, will put this singular bad review in the context of the 35 previous reviews including 7 Five-Stars for May and June 2016.

A fantastic holiday home - life there was a joy.

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful holiday home. It has ample room and is well appointed with all the things you'd ever need. A great barbecue. Good sized rooms. A really nice pool. And of course the views are just stunning with some of the best sunsets I've ever seen.

The villa is a 5 minute walk to the sandy beach at Portigliolo. A quiet, beautiful community on the southern tip of the Gulf of Ajaccio (rated the cleanest in Europe) offers year-round dining (excellent Corsican specialties and wood-fired pizza) and tennis. June to mid September, our local beach blossoms into a secluded water recreation spot (sailing, windsurfing, sea kayaking lessons and rentals are readily available.) without the crowds of the main resort town of Porticcio – conveniently just 17km north along the coast.

During thea summer season, a well-stocked local shop provides fresh breads, local produce and other grocery items. Just 5km south along the coast in the village of Aqua Doria, a larger convenience store is open year round. Heading north along the coastal road to Porticcio, there are many opportunities for shopping, dining and watersports at the numerous suberb beaches and hidden coves. The interior of the island and the mountains are easily accessible by car.

Other Activities: tennis, windsurfing, jet skis, sea kayaking, boat rentals, ferry tours, fishing, hiking, cycling.
