This is your perfect holiday rental home, situated on the outskirts of bustling Sarlat for easy access to all the shops & restaurants & yet within a peaceful valley for a completely relaxing & tranquil experience. A beautiful 16th Century mellow coloured stone house with a rare Pigeonnier tower which has been the subject of many paintings & photographs by local artists & visitors new to the area. This was a house built for the landed Gentry of the 16th Century which still looks out over it's own meadows complete with walnut trees & a babbling brook with the occasional trout. The house is in a sunny valley with woodland on both sides, if you are lucky you can see deer & hares crossing the meadow in the early morning or at dusk. In the summer evenings, whilst enjoying the last of the sun with a glass of local wine, you can hear beautiful nightingales singing.
This is a wonderful period house which has been lovingly restored to it's former glory with a beautiful open plan living dining & kitchen area which makes a perfect family & friend space. You will find comfortable soft furnishings throughout, a large two seater sofa and two armchairs, two window seats facing north and south with cushions, new 5ft King & 6ft extra long Super King or Twin beds, with deep memory foam pocket spring mattresses, totally new en-suite shower rooms, a super heated salt water (soft water without horrible chemicals) pool measuring 10x4m with easy access Roman end, with a shallow & deep end. Everything that you need is provided in this house for your enjoyment but if something is missing, just ask & we'll do our best to find it for you.
It is also possible to rent a 1 bedroom self contained apartment in conjunction with the 2 bedroom house to make a 3 bedroom 3 ensuite home, which is ideal for a multi generational family. Please note, the two homes are never let individually, there is always only one reservation staying at any one time and you will have sole use of the property and pool.
The whole property is over 3 levels, the ground level is a one bedroom apartment with it's own kitchen & living room with independent entrance.
The next level up is the main holiday home which is accessed via the original stone staircase. On this level is the kitchen, dining & living room with two bedrooms & two ensuite shower rooms the next level up.
NB. There is no internal access between the house & the apartment, they are both independent. Access is via the external stone staircase.
We have designed the house this way to give greater flexibility to our guests with rental rates according to number of guests staying. We will only rent the apartment on its own if the two bedroom house is not let (generally this would be the winter period), this is to ensure that there is only one reservation staying at the property at any one time for privacy. At no time will you share the property with other guests.
Rental rates shown are for either the 2 bedroom home or the whole house, please enquire for rates for the apartment only during the off season. The availability calendar shows the dates when all 3 of our houses are reserved, if it shows as available then I do have free dates in one, two or all three of our houses.
We are a 15 minute walk to a Gastronomic restaurant (or a very short small quiet country lane car journey ;-) with good Tripadvisor reviews and during the summer months there is also a nice bar and restaurant 900 mtrs/10mins walk from the house which also offers take out pizzas which are very good. There is another bar restaurant 2kms from the house on the edge of Sarlat and once you are in central Sarlat which is 3.5kms there are 50+ restaurants, bars and street cafes to choose from. We can provide you with fresh free range eggs during your stay from our own hens.

We moved to France with our two children 16 years ago and have lived & worked in the hospitality industry in the Sarlat area since then. We ran our own small hotel and restaurant in Beynac for 6 years and are proud to tell you that we were listed in many International guide books, including Rick Steves, Alistair Sawdays and the Guide du Routard. We sold this business in the summer of 2006, and after listening to the needs of our restaurant and hotel guests we started our holiday rental home business. We now have 3 wonderful vacation rental houses in prime locations in central Sarlat & Beynac which are available to rent all year round. Totally relaxing and yet a short cycle ride or drive to all the main and unique attractions of the area, including the villages of Beynac, Sarlat, Domme, La Roques Gageac & Castelnaud, the Chateaux of Marqueyssac, Castlenaud, Beynac, Fayrac & Milandes, canoeing on the Dordogne river, Sarlat Farmers Markets, plus much more all within a 5-15 minute car journey from this house.
What makes this House unique
Beautiful mellow stone house in tranquil location yet only a 2 minute drive to the centre of bustling Sarlat. We have three beautiful holiday homes, one in central Sarlat, one in central Beynac (wonderful house which over looks 4 Chateaux and the Dordogne river!) and this one which is new to the holiday rental market after a 150,000 Euros refurb is our 16th century Maison Bourgeois with heated salt water pool, which is located just 2 miles from the centre of Sarlat in a tranquil bucolic setting. Both our Sarlat and Beynac homes have been our own family home since we moved to France 13 years ago and we now offer them for others to enjoy. All three houses are private and you will have sole use of the house, garden and pool, they all have their own off road private parking and ensuite bedrooms. As we now live only 5 minutes drive from both Sarlat and Beynac we are on hand for any queries that you may have during your stay so you can be assured of the best of care & assistance if needed. The Sarlat & Beynac houses are within a 2-5 minute easy level stroll of restaurants, cafes and wonderful boulangeries selling the best croissants and baguettes. There are Farmers Food Markets each day of the week in the surrounding towns and villages and a twice weekly street market in Sarlat which also has a daily covered market by the main Square. Here you will find the local farmers selling their freshly harvested produce, including organic bread, fruits, vegetables, cheeses and creams. During the summer months there is a daily variety of street entertainment in Sarlat which is free to watch and sometimes participate in ! This house is a 15 minute walk to a gourmet restaurant which is open all year around & a summertime bar & restaurant with twice weekly live music during July and August and is only a 2 minute car journey into bustling Sarlat. My husband and I stayed in this home with our 3 children (24, 13 and 12) and a family friend for 7 days. The area and the house was perfect for all of us. The house is located countryside which was quiet and a perfect way to end a day full of activities in the surrounding villages. Sarlat, Domme, Beynac were all within a few minutes drive, as well as many other wonderful towns.
From booking to the day we left, Xanthe and Hamish made every experience for us go as smoothly as possible and assisted in anyway they could to ensure our stay was perfect!
The house itself is large, bedrooms all have en suites (including a toilet in each), bedding is plush, very comfortable and everything was very clean. Kitchen was fully stocked with any appliance you could need.
In the mornings, we had a great time collecting eggs from their 13 or so roaming chickens for our breakfast!! In the evening, playing ball with the terrier, Jack (who if we were allowed, would have taken back to the states with us) or cuddling with Mac the cat were all things that made us feel comfortable and at home.
Our whole experience with this rental was perfection and we would highly recommend staying here! Looking forward to staying here again one day!

Lovely quiet house near to everything
I stayed here with my family in July and we enjoyed a fabulous week. Really spacious house which our three generation family of seven enjoyed to the full. Good free WIFI for those of us still needing to work. Lots of sunshine during our stay, lovely warm & clean pool, very clean house, comfortable beds, ceilings fans in upstairs bedrooms and a nice ground floor apartment for the grandparents to enjoy some quiet time without the kids. We really appreciated the help Xanthe & Hamish provided when we had a car problem and all their recommendations were spot on. We would stay again in a heartbeat :)
We booked this house for a week's stay with our 3 kids (aged 11, 8, and 5) and had a fantastic time. Very close to many castles. Very beautifully renovated. Super friendly hosts. Highly recommend it!
We booked the house having seen it on the HomeAway website for a long weekend with another couple as part of a milestone birthday treat. And what a treat! We were not disappointed, the pictures on the website do not do it justice.
Calm, clean, convenient and full of character. The house itself is stunning with loads of space and it has been very sympathetically modernised, not easy with such an old building. The views are lovely, and the general ambiance of the property is idyllic.
Xanthe and Hamish could not do enough for us, from directions and suggestions, to fresh range eggs from their chickens in the mornings. Having them close enough for help but at arms length so you never felt intruded on or a lack of privacy was an added bonus.
All mod cons as expected, cable TV, wifi (a relief as work interrupted our stay and laptops were out on the patio on more then one occasion), washer, dish washer, BBQ, comfortable furniture and fantastic beds.
The pictures don't do the scale of the interior justice, the rooms are huge. And we loved that the bedrooms were on separate sides of the house, divided by stairs, both with en suites so you never disturbed each other. The rooms were lovely and cool, the thick walls and small windows with shutters helped keep the rooms at a nice ambient temperature.
And finally, the private pool. Fantastic, we spent 3 of our 5 days relaxing by the pool, and we are not traditionally pool side people.
I would say that it's a shame with such a stunning house inside that we spent all of our time, and every meal, eating outside on the patio.
We are looking forward to coming back and to trying Xanthe and Hamish's other properties.
Lovely house, nice and clean and well maintained
Helpful owners shared their knowledge of the local area, offering tourist places to visit and some great restaurants to sample, which we did and thoroughly enjoyed. The house has lots of space and is in an idilic and relaxed location. Ceiling fans in upstairs bedrooms worked a treat, ground level bedroom nice and cool, thanks to the old stone walls, I guess? No problems with WiFi, excellent connection, which was good, as it was needed intermittently for work. All-in-all a great place to stay with nice clean pool! If you're looking for some quietness in your life to unplug and unwind, this place offers a slice of tranquility for your digital detox!
Nice stay, but misleading representation
We enjoyed the Sarlat area very much and had a pleasant stay at this house, but I want to warn other people looking for a vacation rental that many things are not as presented in its listing.
First, no where in the write-up would you get the idea that the owners live in the same building. I was quite surprised when I arrived to find one long house divided into the rental area you see pictured-- actually what is pictured includes all of the house you will rent and some of the owner's -- that included the owner's home. I'm very careful when I rent summer houses online and read all the reviews, one of which stated that the owners were right next door, but I thought they were just that, next door, not in the same building where we could see and hear them. I had looked at other properties that had similar set-ups, but rejected them on that basis, because we prefer privacy. The other listings made it quite clear what you were getting, this house did not.
Secondly, we searched for a house on Homeaway using the filter to look only for air conditioned houses, and this listing came up since it lists A/C as one of its amenities. The price was on the high side for the area so it made sense that it came with A/C. But as we found out when we got there during a heat wave, it didn't have air conditioning. The owner gave the self-serving explanation that the thick walls and ceiling fans in two rooms are just as good. I disagree and feel that listing air conditioning so you are included in searches for houses with A/C when you don't have it, no matter what your opinion of how cool your house is, is deceptive. There were also other amenities listed like that, such as tumble dry when there wasn't a dryer, but a rack to hang your clothes on, which is fine with me, but why list it when it's exactly what you don't have?
Another thing that turned out differently than what we expected was the wifi. The listing says free wifi and it had it. But when we checked in the owner said that his wife worked with wifi during the day -- and since it's a shared house, not a private house of your own -- could only one of us use wifi during the day so her bandwidth wasn't affected?
On the positive side, the house is furnished comfortably, the kitchen is good, and pool is lovely, and I can appreciate that the owners describe it with a loving eye, but I think potential renters should know there are inaccurate descriptions and omissions in the listing.
We respect our guests and work hard to provide them with the best service possible. After reading your review, I am sorry that we were not given the opportunity to address your issues during your stay, next time you visit we hope you will be pleased with the simplified instructions we have made based on your comments. We apologise for any misunderstanding caused and look forward to meeting you all again for your next visit to beautiful Sarlat and the Dordogne.
SARLAT & the Dordogne are renowned the world over. Whenever there is a publication or feature on France, anywhere in the world, this is the area that is photographed virtually every time. You might like to visit the vineyards of Bergerac & St.Emilion, or go Hot Air Ballooning meandering along the Dordogne river & see the Chateaux by air; experience one of the many Gourmet restaurants in Sarlat, or sit in the street Cafes & watch the world go by. It is all here for you to do, whether its drifting down the Dordogne river in a canoe or eating in a Michelin starred restaurant.
THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE RIGHT HERE ON YOUR DOORSTEP!!!!

APARTMENT RENTAL - We have the option to let the apartment only over the winter months for longer lets suitable to 2 people maximium. Heating and WIFI included. Enquire for details. Please note that the house and the apartment are not let separately ie. only one reservation at any one time. POOL HEATING - In order to keep the rental rates as low as possible pool heating is optional. Therefore, please note there may be an optional 100€ surcharge pw for pool heating during the cooler months of April, May, September & October depending on the weather at that time. POOL OPENING - Open from 1st April (or earlier depending on the weather and UK school holiday dates) until mid October (or later depending on the weather). I also have the details of another house with similar facilities inc.10x5m pool nearby that will sleep 6-10 guests in a 3 bedroom or 5 bedroom house that has a very advantageous rental rate, enquire for further information.
