This is a charming traditional Portuguese Villa is situated just 350m from the beach and resort centre.

Originally built as a summer retreat for a large Lisbon family, it is set in its own private grounds and boasts a family-sized pool, with a poolside patio/barbecue area overlooking the sea. which is perfect for sunbathing (with handy changing rooms, shower and toilet) There is a large lawn and garden at the front, ideal for relaxing or playing games in the afternoon shade.

The Villa can comfortably accommodate up to 12 people in 3 double bedrooms (2 ensuite) and 3 twin bedrooms (1 ensuite).

At the back overlooking the pool is a spacious terrace with views over to the sea, it has a large table for dining al-fresco and socialising.

Ground floor features: large double lounge with 3 sofas, Satellite TV and DVD as well as WiFi; Large separate dining room; Well equipped modern kitchen; Utility/breakfast room; Private double bedroom with ensuite; Main bathroom off the entrance hall - all decorated to a high standard in a fusion of traditional and modern taste.

Upstairs the spacious landing area leads to 2 double and 3 twin bedrooms. 1 twin and double bedroom have access to a large 25 sq m sun terrace with stunning 180° panoramic views from the Sintra hills to the sea. The 3rd double has a small balcony overlooking the garden.

There is a wealth of experiences to explore in the area:

Situated on the west coast of Portugal, just north of Lisbon, Praia das Maçãs is only 12km from the beautiful World Heritage Site of Sintra. Amongst it’s major attractions are the Moorish castle and the fairy-tale like Palácio da Pena (Pena Palace) plus other historic palaces and gardens. There is also easy access to Lisbon by car or train, and you can visit the famous casino in Estoril, enjoy wine tasting in Colares, discover charming traditional villages and wild coastlines to explore.

There is something for everyone in the village resort and plenty to keep you occupied during your stay throughout the year:

The resort is very popular with families from Lisbon and they enjoy the local beaches throughout the year. All this is all within 5 minutes walking distance of the villa - the Lido with its Olympic-sized swimming pool with water slides - a children's playground - tennis courts and 5-a-side football pitch - A morning market selling everything from fresh fish and freshly grilled chicken, to beachwear and toys - The fabulous fine sandy beach (supervised by lifeguards in the summer season). - The Victorian tram to Sintra - All the great fish restaurants, brasseries and cafes (including Pizza), freshly made ice-cream and local specialities like Pão com chouriço (fresh bread roll baked in a clay oven with chouriço inside) - there are also craft shops, a bakers and a traditional butcher (just around the corner from the centre) as well as a chemist here.

The nightlife in the village is more family orientated and centred around the restaurants; there is one nightclub, (specialising in Gin cocktails) as well as a couple of discos in the summer. A local restaurant owner is also a renowned Fado singer and there are special local events such as the 'Blessing of the Sea' and an annual Mussel festival.

Finding suitable accomodation for a group of 15 (four families, with kids ranging in age from 3 to 16) is not an easy task, so we were really happy to find Casal Santa Maria. From all accounts, it looked like a great property, but I was still a little nervous whether it would meet everyone's needs and expectations. I needn't have worried, though -- as soon as we arrived, it was clear that we had made the right decision!

The villa is even nicer than it looks in the photos, and spotlessly clean to boot. As keen self-caterers, we were very happy with the well-equipped kitchen (two dishwashers, two fridges and a professional quality oven!); the charcoal grill outside also got lots of use.

Another great feature is the excellent use of space, both indoors and out; we never felt cramped, and everyone was able to retreat from the group if desired. In addition to the lounge, there is also a comfy sitting area in the foyer, and on the upstairs landing. Outdoors, there's also lots of choice of where to spend your time, be it the pool terrace, or the front garden. The kids enjoyed playing badminton and table tennis, and of course, swimming! Really, you don't even have to leave the house to have an excellent holiday!!

We did venture into Sintra on the tram (highly recommended!), and spent several afternoons at the beach. Praia das Macas is the closest, though we preferred Praia Pequena (about a 20 minute walk south of the villa). Praia Grande is another 5 minutes along from there, and a bit more lively, with lots cafes and bars, as well as an amazing 100 meter salt water pool. The area is also great for walking -- ask Ralph for directions to Cabo da Roca; it's not to be missed! Or if you'd prefer a pleasant stroll, the pretty village of Azenhas do Mar is an easy 2 km walk north of the villa. The more intrepid of our group enjoyed some great bike trips with Ralph -- thanks again!! Bike rental was a breeze with Cycling Rentals of Sintra -- they even deliver the bikes to the villa!

All in all, we had a fantastic time -- if I could, I'd give Casal Santa Maria 6 stars instead of 5!!

Très bonne semaine au Portugal

Nous avons séjourné dans la maison une semaine. Nous sommes une famille de 11 personnes, la maison est suffisamment grande pour tous nous y loger confortablement. Très bien placée amour visiter les principaux sites, aller à la plage et faire du surf.

Ralph qui nous accueille est très précis dans ses explications et de bon conseil.

There is also easy access to Lisbon itself and a short drive away is the famous casino in Estoril, or the beautiful marina at Cascais. 3 minutes walking distance of the villa is the summer Lido with its Olympic-sized swimming pool with water slide and children's pool; Close by is the covered morning market selling everything from fresh fish, vegetables, freshly grilled chicken to beachwear, towels and toys.

The resort centre (5 minutes from villa) has children's playground; Tennis courts and 5-a-side pitch. The fabulous sandy beach is supervised by lifeguards in summer season; there are many excellent restaurants (open throughout the year), bars, brasseries and cafes - some on or overlooking the beach; A delightful Victorian Tram can be taken from the beach to Sintra.

Other Activities: Cultural sightseeing - Sintra's historic palaces and grounds, wine tasting, cycle-tours and excellent surfing.

Designed in matt white tiles with highlights in mosaics and marble, decorated tastefully to a high standard. For use during low season are heated towel rails. Two double bedrooms have ensuite shower rooms with large shower cubicles. There is a shared shower room and WC upstairs and a shared master bathroom downstairs with a full-sized bath and shower, WC. The upstairs twin has an ensuite bathroom - bath with shower. There is also a pool changing room in the garden which has a shower, 2 basins and WC. All HOT WATER supplied to the house is solar-heated (supported by electric boiler in low season. Any excess hot water is vented into the pool)

  • On the first floor are 5 bedrooms off a large landing area, all with traditional furniture and decor. First double bedroom has an ensuite shower room and first twin bedroom has fitted wardrobes and ensuite bathroom, both open on to a 25sq.m terrace with stunning views east to the Sintra hills, south across the green river valley and west to the sea. This balcony is an all day sun trap. Second double has fitted wardrobes and a small balcony (6 sq. m) overlooking the lawn with a sea view to the setting sun in the west. The 2nd and 3rd twin rooms are on the east side and get the early morning sun. Shared shower room with facilities upstairs and a separate master bathroom off the main hallway on the ground floor. The 6th double bedroom (formally the maid's room) is on the ground floor located through the breakfast room and has an ensuite shower room. It's traditionally furnished and decorated with views south over the pool.
