About the property

The Quietest and most remote Mountain Top Retreat in the Elk State Forest

*** SPECIAL SUMMER RATES ***

Click the Rates Button Above for Details.

If you're looking for a first class lodge in an unbeatable location, you've come to the right place. Newly constructed in 2016, our Lodge is located in the heart of the Pennsylvania Elk range. Save your spot now…

This is what a mountain retreat is all about. Quiet and remote yet all the comforts of home… and then some. This lodge has something for everyone. Whatever your reason for vacationing in the mountains, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve tried to think of everything you’ll need to ensure a first class stay. We’ve paid special attention to every detail inside even though we know once you walk through the sliding glass doors and on to the deck you’ll probably spend a good bit of your time outside.

We hope you agree, the most enticing feature of this property is its location. No need to worry about bothering the neighbors, or even seeing them. You’ll be situated right in the middle of 6 wooded acres and the entire property borders the state forest. Perfect whether you’re a hunter, fisherman, wildlife enthusiast or just someone looking for peace and quiet. If you've come to see the Elk, you likely won't have to go far. They visit the property on a regular basis. If a trip to the Elk Viewing area is on your agenda, it's just a short drive away.

Of course in this day and age we know that certain things are necessary to ensure an enjoyable stay so we come equipped with satellite TV, WiFi Internet access and a cell phone booster system so you can stay in touch with friends and family.

Winter in the mountains can be beautiful and challenging at the same time. A four wheel drive vehicle is generally required especially in January and February. Our lodge is situated on a state forest road with no winter maintenance. The township road which ends at the corner of our property is maintained through the winter but tire chains are recommended if not required at times. Conditions can change quickly so be prepared if you wish to book a stay during January or February.

Scroll down to see everything we have to offer. We are looking forward to having you.

About Seth Conner

Kevin Frantz and Seth Conner, owners, have been enjoying this region of PA since childhood. Both avid outdoorsmen, this area has fit our lifestyle for over 40 years and we are excited to provide this vacation spot so that others can experience the beauty of the PA Wilds.

Seth Conner purchased this chateau / country house in 2015

Why Seth Conner chose Pennsylvania

We purchased this property and built this home mainly due to its perfect location in the heart of the Pennsylvania Elk Range. Just minutes from Benezette, guests can take a short drive to the Winslow Hill Elk viewing center or even closer, the Hicks run viewing area. Speaking of Hicks Run, 1 mile from the home is some of the greatest trout fishing water in the region.

If elk viewing is your reason for visiting, you may not even have to leave the side deck. Elk frequently roam right through the yard.

Located on top of the mountain, privacy, peace and quiet are the best features of this location. There isn't another camp in sight.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We cannot say enough about our stay at the Barr None Lodge! The owners truly thought of everything and then some. We felt completely "at home" and enjoyed the peaceful surroundings. Also was glad that we weren't within ear or eye shot of others....felt like the mountain was ours! Nice property to move around on,too.....kids could mess around outside with plenty of room. Beautiful decor and layout inside....spacious covered deck outside...I could go on and on. Will definitely return!!

Cozy and remote

  • 4 of 5

This is one of those places where you wish you could stay longer. The property is clean and cozy, and felt very private and remote. Really, the only drawback (and the only reason this place isn't 5 stars) is that you do need to pack in all the water and food you're going to use during your stay. The well water is, as advertised, very iron-laden, so while it is safe to cook with, I wouldn't, more because of how it is likely to flavor the food than anything else. Also, there aren't a lot of good options for groceries nearby. This, however, is the price you pay for truly getting away from it all, and it is totally worth it! (Who wants to spend vacation going to the grocery store, anyway?) The owners have provided more than most rental owners do in terms of supplies, so call and check to see if they have it before you bring it because they just may. The lodge is set on a nice, wooded lot, so there's a lot to see just wandering up and down the logging road or in the woods around the property. We saw elk on the way in and the way out. We saw turkey on the property in the morning and heard owl calls and coyotes at night, not to mention the spring peepers. There are plenty of good hiking trails close by, and an elk viewing blind right at the bottom of the hill from the cabin, which you can see when you're turning off 555. You will be tempted, however, to spend the whole time on the side porch or out by the fire ring. The owners could not be more responsive. Seth got back to me within minutes of my e-mail.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. I do apologize for the water situation but wanted to add that future guests (and hopefully you again soon) should no longer have to worry. We added an additional system that seems to have greatly improved the water quality. We won't give up until we have it completely resolved. Iron is extremely challenging to combat but we finally think we are winning the battle.

We are located in the heart of the elk range with several viewing areas close by. Hicks Run viewing area is a 5 minute drive and the Winslow Hill loop is just down the road from there. If you're looking for elk, you shouldn't have any trouble finding them.
