Hello, I am Liz and my husband is Quentin. We are both now retired, I trained in art, and was an air hostess, where I met my husband whilst in India. My husband who is Irish, was a ship's-captain on long-haul and fast ferries and worked on passenger ships with the B.I. Company in India. We have one son, who lives near Paris. He has a French wife, and one son. I was born in the midlands of England, so discovering this wonderful villa was pure magic. The climate is really exceptional and we can now live a full life with many days of sunshine. We love this corner of the world and enjoy sharing its beauty with our visitors. We have made lots of wonderful friends who return year after year.
Liz purchased this Villa in 2000
Why Liz chose Gattières
We chose to live in France, and fell madly in love with this lovely villa at first sight! It is unique in that it is very private, surrounded by beautiful terraces with olive, lemon, and orange trees and yet it is on the doorstep of Nice and all the major attractions of the Riviera. It is centrally located for all major towns, motorway and airport. We love being able to walk into the village and share a coffee and croissant with our new French friends. Here, at Le Contadour, we are so spoiled to live under the gorgeous blue Mediterranean skies. You, too, can share a part of it.
What makes this Villa unique
The Contadour (haunt of artists and writers) has hosted guests worldwide for over 18 years and who return frequently. It is perfectly located just 20 mins. drive from Nice, Vence, and the many famous beaches and tourist spots on the Riviera. Highly rated as 5* it maintains its peace and serenity in an area of outstanding natural beauty; perched 300 m above the Var Valley and the foothills of the Alpes. If you can tear yourself away from the beauty of this villa, then visit the famous resorts of Nice, Monaco, Cannes and St Tropez- all a short drive away, or escape to the mountains and visit the ancient perched villages where time stands still. Locally, you can visit a Roman vineyard and sample the delicious wines of the area. Take a walk into the hills for spectacular views. Share the life of a French resident. Participate in village life by joining in a game of boules or sipping a gorgeous coffee with a steaming croissant, while watching the locals greeting one another. The famous institutions such as the Fondation Maecht and the Matisse Chapel are close by with wonderful exhibitions of art and sculpture. Shop for fresh fruits and vegetables in local markets. Taste the huge varieties of cheese from the mountains. Even in the short winter months, Gattieres is sheltered from the frost and snow and you can sit out most days to enjoy lunch on your terrace. We get 300 days of sunshine a year. Within the grounds of Le Contadour, you will be able to benefit from an exotic, heated pool, surrounded by mediterranean plants and trees. You no longer need wait until the crowds arrive on the Riviera to appreciate the calm surroundings and the beauty of the area. Here at Le Contadour, you are central for everything; the airport being only a 20 minute drive away, and the motorway only 10 minutes drive. You can enjoy all the benefits of life on the Cote d'Azur here at Le Contadour and for those who seek a hideaway different from the masses whether young or old, it is right here.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Lovely star with warm and friendly hosts
We had a fantastic week in and around Gattieres, staying in this beautiful apartment. Liz and Quentin are the kindest and friendliest people you could have as hosts. Around if you need help or advice, but otherwise leaving us to enjoy their beautiful property. The apartment is very quiet and has views from the balcony down to the sea in the far distance. It is really convenient for visiting places such as Monaco, Antibes, Vence, St Paul de Vence and Nice, but is also perfect for relaxing around the lovely pool area. The aircon in the living area and the large bedroom are excellent and the kitchen is short of nothing.
A great stay and if we are ever in the area again we will definitely choose this apartment again.
Wonderful hosts, great location and very high quality villa
Stayed for 1 week End July, as a family of 3 with a 13yo daughter. Villa is very well decorated with high quality soft furnishings and furnished with all the equipment and appliances you could need. The villa is well maintained and is well cared for and it shows. The pool is a good size and plenty of space to lounge around and catch the sun or sit in the shade. Liz and Quentin (the owners) are the nicest and most helpful hosts you could ask for, completely welcoming and friendly, helpful and very knowledable of the area and can assist with tips and advice to improve your stay. They will both make sure your stay is going well and are happy to either be part of your holiday or leave you to do your own thing with just enough help to get the most from your time, its a great balance. The villa is set in its own grounds and not overlooked so you have privacy, but also have great views over the valley to Nice. The gardens and grounds are well maintained. The rural setting is good to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but you are only 20mins from the city itself by car. The local village has a supermarket, fine bakers, grocers and a butchers which are good for supplies and fresh products daily. There are lots of other villages to explore by car. All in all a great place to stay in a great location with great hosts. I would really recommend this villa, we all had such a great time and were sorry to leave at the end of our holiday.
Perfect place to relax away from the crowds
Liz and Quintin were delightful hosts and have a fabulous home. We travelled as 4 adults and a 7 month old baby and we had everything we needed in the house, including high chair for baby and a well equipped kitchen for food prep.
We spent hours relaxing by the pool, which was the perfect relief from the hot temperatures in the middle of the day. The evenings were extremely relaxing drinking wine and cooking on the charcoal grill on our private terrace.
The bakery in Gattieres has delicious croissants, pastries and baguettes for your daily fix.
The short drive to Vence and St Paul was particularly lovely, and the beaches and restaurants of Nice were a 20 min drive away.
Thanks again Quintin and Liz for the great company and sharing your home.
Very nice place, wonderfull stay, we enjoyed it.
Our stay was wonderfull, we had a nice view from the terrace, comfortable house, nice garden and swimming pool area. Not far to the seaside, to Nice, to the small mediaeval towns. Liz and Quentin were very friendly and helpful. Our stay was really relaxing.
Fantastic and very friendly hosts, gorgeous location and garden/pool. Couldn’t fault anything. Perfect as a base for visiting lots of places on he coast and in the mountains. Easy to drive to from the airport, would defiantly recommend .
Thanks for a lovely holiday.
Many thanks Angela for your very kind words and the review. We loved meeting you and your little girl and sincerely hope to meet you again one day.
Quiet, well equipped apartment above Nice
The apartment below the main house is very well equipped and has a private terrace with expansive view. This terrace is shaded and would be more appreciated on hot days. Gattieres village with its grocery and bakery is a ten minute walk.
We received a warm welcome and helpful advice about visiting in the area. A detailled house guide gives a lot of information and the hosts fill in with other suggestions. We appreciated the heated pool in March . The driveway is on a steep downward slope and you must be careful getting in and out. If you are inexperienced with a manual transmission we would suggest renting an automatic since some of the local roads are challenging.
The hosts suggested driving to the northern end of the Nice tramway, parking there and exploring Nice by public transport (recommended ). All in all a very good place for a vacation above the crowds on the coastal strip.
Gattieres, is an unspoilt, charming, very French medieval village, situated 300m above the Var Valley. As yet, unspoilt by tourism. It is steeped in history, dating from the Middle Ages where its streets still reflect times long ago. Perched on the foothills of the Alpes, the views from the village down the Var river to the Mediterranean sea or beyond to the snowy mountains, are breathtaking!
One of its main attractions is that it is central to all major towns. All the most famous resorts on the Riviera are only a 20 min. drive on easy roads. There are many local, scenic train journeys along the coast where a car is not necessary.
Gattieres Opus, hosts a famous open-air opera in July every year, professionally produced with well-know operatic singers and musicians. It is a performance not to be missed!
Numerous cultural events, concerts, street parties, plus local markets and car boot sales are big attractions in the summer, with bargains galore and great fun for all the family.
Many famous writers and artists have lived in the area, drawn by the quality of the light, such as Monet, Matisse, Picasso, Renoir, and Chagall and their works can be seen in many of the local galleries and museums.
For skiers, it is less than one hours drive to the well-known ski resorts of Greolieres, Isla 2000, Colmiane, and Auron; ski in the morning and party by the pool in the evening-even in November! THE POOL IS HEATED!
The Italian border is only 50 mins. drive away with its famous street markets offering copies of designer products and great restaurants. The Piedmonte mountain area is very scenic for day trips.
We are central for visiting the many Medieval, historic, mountain villages such as Eze, La Turbie with its Roman ruins, or famous resorts on the Cote d'Azur, such as Nice, with its international crowds, its famous flower festival in February, and the fantastic Carnival; one of the biggest in Europe! A must for winter months!
Monaco, and its principality including the exciting international Grande Prix, and Cannes, with its famous film festival in May, where you will see many of the famous stars from screen and TV. St.Tropez, the home of Brigitte Bardo, chic boutiques, and super yachts. Vence, for its famous artists, including the fascinating Maecht Museum in St Paul; International Antibes, with its millionaire yachts and international crowds is a must to visit.
Feel part of the jet-set scene by simply sitting with a cocktail at one of the many splendid bars situated all along the coast. All this is available a short drive from the villa.
For nature lovers and those who love walking, we have the well-known GR51 which crosses from east to west across France and is accessible from Gattieres. Many simple and delightful walks can be made from the villa for all levels of competence, promising extraordinary views and quality of air!
Cycling enthusiasts can enjoy participating in the numerous clubs and tracks in the area which is famous for its cycling. It is a national sport here in France. The Iron Man contest passes right through Gattieres in June.
Other Activities: Botanical walks, Matisse chapel, art galleries, mountain resorts, painting courses, horse races, theatre, concerts, outdoor markets, top restaurants locally, golf, fishing, and rafting, and ferry trips to the islands of Lerin, where the Cistercian monks have created a wonderful vineyard and allow visits to the ancient monastery. A famous Mitchelin starred restaurant offers cookery classes to small groups on a regular basis. Courses can be arranged for you in advance. Nothing is forgotten in the playground of the Riviera!
Not forgetting Golf: We have 12 golf courses nearby. However, courses tend to be quite pricey. Check them out on the internet before lugging them with you on holiday!
Great tennis clubs are available to guests nearby.
Ski: There are many well-known ski resorts in the area surrounding the Alpes Maritimes. The closest at Isola 2000 is only an hour's drive away, with all facilities, or lovely Colmieres, for both ski du font and Alpine. The scenery is breathtaking, even for simply walking. You can be skiing in the morning and be back to the villa for a BBQ in the evening!
Or for simple indulgence, treat yourself to the numerous spas and beauty centres in the area. Nothing has been spared here on the Cote d'Azur! It really is a wonderful destination - that is why we chose to live here permanently!
Le Contadour Villa is designed for the discerning visitor even in our glorious winter when the crowds have left. Come and enjoy the winter sun where you can still see temperatures of 16+°- escape from the cold, wet weather back home. Swim in a lovely heated pool chez nous! So easy to fly to; in 20 minutes you can be enjoying all the comforts of our villa, sit on the terrace and enjoy a glass or two of bubbly, take in the exotic perfumes of the flowers, and ... relax! Share our little bit of paradise here on the Cote d'Azur.
