About Nancy Barnes

My husband and I were both born in Munising and I grew up there, he in Lower Michigan. He moved back in 1974 and we raised our three children here in the UP. We currently live across the street from the cottage and will be available for any assistance or information you might need. We love to travel and enjoy meeting new people. We rented our current home as a seasonal rental for 25 years, so we know what our guests want in a rental. We have a lot of repeat guests who come back year after year to enjoy Shelter Bay and the surrounding area. We are confident that you will love it too!

Why Nancy Barnes chose Au Train

My grandfather initially owned the property where we currently live, and it was eventually passed down to me. Shelter Bay has always held a special place in my heart and I consider it my little piece of heaven on earth. We acquired the property where the cottage that we now rent to guests is, because we hope to leave it to our children someday. In the meantime, we want others to enjoy Shelter Bay as much as we do.

What makes this cottage unique

My husband built the cottage and we have taken very good care of it over the years. We lived in it for 6 years giving it our own personal touches. The cottage is very tastefully decorated to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. The best feature is the day house for your use, which is just across the street and down a short wooded path to the lakeshore. There you can sit either inside, or out on the deck with a magnificent Lake Supeior view. It has comfortable furniture, and a small dining room table to enjoy your dinner. Open the windows with the screens and feel the lake breeze while inside. It's a perfect spot anytime of day or night!

This one is a gem! Highly recommend. Immaculate and cozy.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for three nights and could not have been more pleased. This is a great location with plenty to do in the area. We had a blast touring waterfalls and lighthouses. Sunrise and sunset were extraordinary each day. Loved the day house. This property is kept in immaculate condition. One could quite literally eat off the floor!! Your hosts have thought of everything you will need for your stay and are helpful yet unobtrusive. Book this one !

Best of both worlds - lake and forest!

  • 5 of 5

Shelter Bay Cottage provides the best of Lake Superior and the forest. The spotless, comfortable, 1 bedroom cottage is well supplied and sits nestled among tall trees so you have a Northwoods experience. The newly built and charming Day House is a short walk across lightly traveled Old M28 and down a dirt path lined by trees. There you can rest comfortably outside or in, with windows on three sides to take in the awesome views of Lake Superior. Nancy and Jack are gracious hosts, welcoming and ready with helpful suggestions to experience the area, but are also mindful of your privacy. This was my third trip as their guest and I know I will come back.

Perfect place on Lake Superior

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was just lovely and immaculate and had everything you could need. Owners are nearby and very responsive to any questions plus recommendations for local sights and restaurants. The BEST thing is the day house on the lake. We watched the sunrise there and the view of the lake is unbelievably beautiful any time of day. Tons to do in the area if, like us, you've never been there before. Would highly recommend!

The spotless main house is just perfect for a couple or anyone just looking to relax. Sunrises, and stars are amazing and walking the quiet beach or taking a swim so refreshing! Jack and Nancy are wonderful hosts!

Beautiful spot in the quiet woods

  • 5 of 5

A very clean, comfortable and well maintained cottage. Great location, close to Hiawatha, Pictured Rocks and Marquette. Lovely swimming nearby in Superior as well as the warmer waters of inland lakes. You couldn't ask for better hosts than Nancy and Jack.

The day cottage, with stunning views of Superior is a highlight.

Our stay at Shelter Bay Cottage was everything we hoped it would be. We loved exploring the area, touring the waterfalls and cruises on the lake. The cottage was clean and very comfortable. We hope to come back for another week at the Shelter Bay Cottage.
