One Bedroom Cottage, Bungalow Style, With Access To A Day House On Lake Superior
About Nancy Barnes
My husband and I were both born in Munising and I grew up there, he in Lower Michigan. He moved back in 1974 and we raised our three children here in the UP. We currently live across the street from the cottage and will be available for any assistance or information you might need. We love to travel and enjoy meeting new people. We rented our current home as a seasonal rental for 25 years, so we know what our guests want in a rental. We have a lot of repeat guests who come back year after year to enjoy Shelter Bay and the surrounding area. We are confident that you will love it too!
Why Nancy Barnes chose Au Train
My grandfather initially owned the property where we currently live, and it was eventually passed down to me. Shelter Bay has always held a special place in my heart and I consider it my little piece of heaven on earth. We acquired the property where the cottage that we now rent to guests is, because we hope to leave it to our children someday. In the meantime, we want others to enjoy Shelter Bay as much as we do.
What makes this Cottage unique
My husband built the cottage and we have taken very good care of it over the years. We lived in it for 6 years giving it our own personal touches. The cottage is very tastefully decorated to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. The best feature is the day house for your use, which is just across the street and down a short wooded path to the lakeshore. There you can sit either inside, or out on the deck with a magnificent Lake Supeior view. It has comfortable furniture, and a small dining room table to enjoy your dinner. Open the windows with the screens and feel the lake breeze while inside. It's a perfect spot anytime of day or night!

Cute little cottage
Didn’t spend a lot of time at the cottage as we were in town for a wedding and our schedule was packed. But bed was comfy, owners were great! Would go back again!
Loved it ❤️
We couldn't of asked for nicer hosts. The cabin is lovely and very clean. Everything you need for a comfortable stay is provided. The day house was a pleasure to spend time and watch the waves or the stars. Would stay again and recommend it to anyone else.
Lovely Down Time
This is our second stay and we enjoyed it just as much. The home is perfect for two adults to stay. The day house adds a whole other relaxing level. Even in the rain you can watch and hear the lake. The house is well supplied for cooking and barbecuing. It's perfectly located for day excursions. The hosts are available and wonderful. If you're looking for a true hidden gem in the trees but also lakeside you've found it.
The day cottage on Lake Superior is Devine. We loved our is it and the hosts were exceedingly nice and accommodating.
Great house with lake access
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this small but very nice house with a huge lot, including a lovely day house with awesome views of Lake Superior. The firepit with a complimentary wheelbarrow full of wood was a nice touch. Highly recommended.
Nature at it's best
A wonderful place to come back to after long days of hiking and kayaking. So relaxing on the lake. Nancy and Jack are like next door neighbors. Oh --- and do not forget to take the sunrise on the lake. What a way to start the morning.
Located adjacent to the Hiawatha National Forest, hike out your front door to explore the old rock kilns and cemetery. Enjoy swimming and picnicking at a inland lake nearby with a sand beach at a roadside park. You'll also have access to a quaint day house located directly on the water edge of Lake Superior.
