Overview

About the property

Architect's loft overlooking the river Seine

If you want to discover Paris on foot, this is the place to be!

Our beautiful architect-designed apartment lies in the very heart of Paris at Châtelet in the first arrondissement.

Located on the top floor of an 18th century listed building on a quiet, leafy street opposite Théâtre de Paris and one of the city's most romantic flower markets.

A ten minute stroll in any direction takes you to some famous landmarks including the river Seine, Ile de la Cité, Centre Pompidou and the Louvre museum.

Our apartment has stunning views and has been simply modernised whilst retaining its historic features.

The living area has a south facing balcony, an inviting sofa area, well-equipped with books, satellite TV, DVDs and CDs, as well as Wi-Fi.

We often stay ourselves and love to gather around our big oak dining table.

You will enjoy playing chef in the well equipped kitchen and the view of the twinkling river at night certainly takes the edge off the washing up!

The apartment is a home from home for us and we hope for you too.

About Clare Ash

We are an Anglo American Academic family who live in London but met at Stanford University as Grad students. We have spent sabbaticals in the States and Paris and have by now grown to a family of 5 daughters and 11 Grandchildren--all of whom have spent some time in Paris and in this apartment. So we share it with you as house guests- albeit paying- but we leave everything ready for the stay of friends , not commercial tenants.

Clare Ash purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Clare Ash chose 1st Arrondissement Louvre

It is surrounded by beautiful buildings and the history of Paris envelopes you in every direction. It is quiet, comfortable and easy to live in. The neighbourhood is very safe and the little local restaurants excellent. A taxi stand, the metro and buses are all within a block: the River Boat is further away- two blocks at Pont-Neuf !

What makes this apartment unique

All rooms face South with French windows and small balconies.

We are not overlooked and sky lights in the bathroom and hall help fill the apartment with light. We have architects in the family so you will find a lot of thought has gone into the design and the details.

Our favourite view is watching the boats on the Seine from the kitchen sink, but the views of Ste Chapelle and Hôtel de Ville are also hard to beat.

Most of all, coming to our apartment allows us to become Paris residents with the freedom to construct a daily routine according to whim without restriction but with all essentials laid on.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Visited Paris for one week in May. The apartment was perfect in every way. The location allowed walking access to many venues - museums (Louvre, Orangerie, Pompidou, D'Orsay, Rodin, Picasso), churches (Sainte-Chappelle, Notre Dame) , shopping ( I liked Deyrolle and Alexandra Sojfer), Seine, markets galore, Hotel de Ville, Victor Hugo, Bastille, etc. Some short distances, some longer distances. Metro is close by and taxis are readily available. The apartment itself is very nicely situated with a lift, a well stocked kitchen and excellent water pressure in the shower - plus 3 balconies!! The beds were comfy. Scrumptious boulangerie located below the apartment - my favorite was the apricot croissant. Very decent market a block away. Some decent restaurants and cafes near by but I recommend eating in the various neighborhoods across Paris. Definitely recommend this flat.

central and cosy at the same time

  • 5 of 5

We had a very nice stay in Paris! Everything worked fine, Mme W. welcomed us at the apartment and explained everything to us, and we were really enchanted by the nice views to Théâtre du Châtelet and the Seine. But in particular my parents and I liked very much the decoration of the apartment that is quite functional and very cosy at the same moment – a combination you can't find very often. (My mother was absolutely enthused about the well organised kitchen cupboards, including the little tags indicating which item had to be where!) Thanks to the very central situation of the apartment we could discover quite a lot of Paris, and even with my old father who is not very quick on his feet anymore we could do some walks to Notre Dame, to the Quartier Latin or to Marais, and for the longer distances we could easily take a cab. So our stay in Paris really was a raving success!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. Like you we enjoy being at home in the apartment, cooking the delicious things the Paris street market offers and then dining with a view of the river and St Chapelle. Hope you will be able to return!

We stayed at three VRBO's on our trip through London, Paris and Edinburgh. Two were wonderful, this was not, for us anyway. On the 6th (top) floor, very hot with no air conditioning, which I thought was perhaps the norm till talking with other travelers in the area who were comfortably cool in their rentals. We slept little due to the heat. But the biggest problem for me was the response of the owner when a plumbing problem nearly prevented our stay. I was packing my two kids to leave London for Paris when I got an email telling me of the problem and that if the apartment was not usable when we got there they would gladly refund our money! That's it. No offer to assist with alternate arrangements, just refund my money. Turns out VRBO is not much more helpful: when I called them they said they would be happy to help only AFTER the owner of this property had refunded my payment, not before, even if that was after my arrival in Paris with two kids in tow. Fortunately the plumbing problem was fixed after hours the night before our arrival but that was only good luck. Otherwise I would have been face with a very challenging problem. I have a VRBO of my own in California and would never leave guests in the lurch this way. Though a rare occurrence, I have needed to locate and secure alternative and equivalent housing and have worked hard to do so. Seems the only right thing to do when your guests have counted on you and are now just wanting to enjoy the vacation they worked so hard to plan and pay for. I would never again stay in a home owned by Claire Ash. Three stars because of great location near the river and countless restaurants and shops, the Lourve, Notre Dame, etc.

One additional caution - if you take the Chunnel train over from London to Paris Nord station, do NOT allow yourself to be guided to a taxi by anyone from inside the station. It's an expensive scam. Taxis are outside and accessed same as in any other city - without non-driver solicitors.

Perfect for Paris stay

  • 5 of 5

The location is perfect for food, walking and transportation. The property was exactly as described, with no surprises. Great kitchen, dining, balconies, bedrooms, large bathroom and with a washing machine.

Wonderful boulangerie and patisserie on the corner. Two small but very adequate grocers within 3 and 7 minutes walking distance. Walk 4 minutes to catch a direct bus to Rue Cler street market for outdoor shopping, or walk 12 minutes to Rue Montorgueil street market. Bank and Metro are within a block or two.

All that we needed to have a perfect stay was included in this Flat, and we have no suggestions for improvement. Thank you for sharing it with us!

Comfortable, attractive apartment - we will return

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd stay in this apartment (1st in Sept 2016) which we rented on the recommendation of a friend who had stayed before us. It is clean, furniture is comfortable, good kitchen (food shop around the corner), very helpful local agent who sorted a minor problem instantly. Perfectly situated for exploring Paris on foot or via metro. We have already recommended this apartment to friends.

We quite enjoyed our 5 (too short) days in Paris at 24 rue Victoria, an absolutely perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

The top floor flat has leafy views down onto the street’s treetops, and across to the iconic grey Parisian roof of Théâtre du Châtelet, with a glimpse of the nearby Seine. Across the Seine, on Ile de la Cité, we could see the Conciergerie and the exquisite spires of Sainte Chapelle.

We loved popping down to the Seine in the evening to watch the Eifel Tower’s lights go into ‘twinkling mode’ for 5 minutes each hour.

I’d foolishly assumed the elevator went to the top floor. But there are several narrow, spiral steps to the flat - very difficult for me with my game leg and walking canes, to come and go each day. Also, there are 2 steps up at the ground floor. My husband was fine with the stairs, though.

Otherwise, the flat is as advertised … very light and bright (openable skylights in the bathroom and in the hallway), with a fairly well equipped kitchen. There’s a nice long counter, with several drawers, cabinets and shelves filled with all you need.

Several lights over the work area, and a pair of ‘chandeliers’ over the large dining table and chairs. I admit to being challenged by the mystifying way the light switches work …

A small chair is at the wee ‘work’ desk, located beside the step up to the tiny Parisian balcony (the 2 bedrooms also have these tiny, step-up balconies). There are book shelves galore, with many useful tourist books and pamphlets.

The flat’s 2 bedrooms have largish closets, good hanging space and lots of shelves, a goodly supply of extra towels and bed linens, and an iron and ironing board. There’s also a small step-stool (handy for reaching the levers to open the 2 angled windows over the kitchen counter area).

A great little spin washing machine and laundry soap and a drying rack that heats up, were quite useful!

Good lighting in the bathroom, along with great natural light from the skylight. Great counter space, and a pair of large drawers under the sink, for all your ‘stuff’.

We appreciated the 2 umbrellas, covered grocery cart and 2 hefty cloth grocery bags.

Myriam very warmly greeted us and cheerily showed us around, and gave us handy tips about where to shop, eat, etc.

As others have stated, our communication with Ms. Ash during the booking process and afterward was easy, quick, and very courteous.

Good location/well equipted

  • 5 of 5

We spent several days in Paris and stayed at this VRBO. We found it comfortable and had everything we needed as a functioning home away from home. It is well located near major metro lines and the popular sites. There is a grocery store and boulangerie nearby and many restaurants and major shopping as well. It was quiet with the windows closed and we didn't open them due to outdoor temps.

Steeped in history, with buildings from the 18th and 19th century on one side and the Théâtre Musical de Paris on the other, we are just one block north of the Quai Megisserie which runs across the Seine with bookstalls and flower markets.

Place Châtelet with the gilded victory atop a column and surrounding fountains has claim to be the centre of Paris.

A 10 min walk south takes you across the bridge to the Ile de la Cité and Notre-Dame. To the east, the Hôtel de Ville; to the north, Centre Pompidou, to the west, the Louvre museum.

We are at the crossroads of all transport: Metro, RER, buses and vélib (street bikes).

If, like us, you are passionate about food then this is a great part of the city to base yourself in.

One of the country's oldest and most loved gourmet food markets on Rue Montorgueil is a short walk away, whilst below our apartment is one of the best boulangeries in Paris.

Shopping, sightseeing, cultural entertainments and, of course, great and varied places to eat are within easy reach.

Other Activities: shopping, museums, theatres, cinemas, antiques, fitness centre.
