This new luxury ski apartment is situated by the ski slopes in the traditional Savoyarde Village of Les Houches, entrance to the Chamonix Valley at the foot of Mont Blanc. It’s virtually ski in ski out with the ski lifts Bellevue Cable Car and Chair Lift Coupe de Monde 150 metres away plus the Ski Bus stop giving access to the ESF ski school and the vast number of other ski areas in the Chamonix Valley. Fully equipped and furnished to a high standard with HD TV. Free WiFi access in the apartment. Within 150 metres there are three excellent restaurants, three bars and a good selection of shops. If you are part of a larger group we have links with other apartment owners in Chalet Whymper. We can put you in touch with them and so cater for large parties all in the same building. Excellent location for activity holidays; mountain biking, cycling, walking, hiking, white water rafting, mountaineering, climbing (outdoor and indoor) and paragliding.

About Janet Saville

Hi, my name is Janet, husband JP, then the children: Hannah, Brittany and Oliver (who are twins). We live in a seaside town on the south coast of England enjoying all the activities the South Downs have to offer. However, whenever we can we like to swap the rolling Sussex hills for the spectacular mountains of Chamonix. All the family love hiking and skiing (although Britt is a snowboarder) and the twins are keen climbers. For us Chamonix is the perfect year round destination and still, after almost 15 years of holidays there are still new hikes for us to discover and enjoy, not to mention ski resorts in neighbouring valleys.

What we love about this property is how close it is to all the amenities; ski lifts, restaurants, bars, supermarket, and of course the fabulous bread shop. I love the views – sitting with a cup of tea at the end of the day looking out over the ski runs and down the valley to the Fiz mountain range. Or, on the bedroom balcony catching a sunset over the Aiguille du Midi.

It’s also just a short bus, train or car ride into Chamonix where you can enjoy the hustle bustle, myriad of shops, restaurants, casino, bowling alley, night clubs, and bars (many with live music). This year we enjoyed listening to a Columbian Salsa band at the Club des Artistes, and saw the local ice hockey team “Les Chamois” win an eventful match against Brest.

Having stayed at this apartment for the second time we can only say that for a skiing trip this apartment is wonderful. From initial contact with Janet to the end of your holiday the whole experience is simply fabulous. The apartment has everything you could wish for. It is beautifully furnished, with wonderful views and is excellently kept. I cannot recommend staying here more highly. You have only to read the visitors book to know you are staying somewhere special.

Great Apartment - Great Location

We stayed one week (3 - 10 Jan 15) in this fantastic apartment with our two grown up children. An ideal location for skiing in Les Houches and a short 10 minute drive up the valley to Chamonix. A two minute walk to the nearest lifts. Great selection of ski rental shops - we used Intersport at the lift station and got great service and rates. If you are in to cooking then Chalet Whimper has everything you will need to make anything from a boiled egg to a soufflé an oven ready meal to a full roast dinner. A nice and welcome touch is that the owners don't clean the cupboards out of the essentials after each visit so getting started was easy without spending a fortune on day one on groceries and cleaning products. Just top up as you go along and leave something for the next guests. Janet's travel instructions made finding it easy even in the dark and the secure garage was a welcome feature for the car and ski gear although there is also a good sized locker room. Great views by day, ample entertainment options for the evenings in. Endless hot water in the good sized shower room. Clean and well maintained building and apartment. Would definitely return.

Great stay, super location

Fantastic location (not in busy Chamonix if you are looking for a little quiet in between hiking and going out), great apartment. Clean and modern. Close to Chamonix. Walking distance to bakery and shops and central Les Houches with all the amenities. Very comfortable. Stayed for one week. Managed to visit Italy, Switzerland and the surrounding region with no difficulty. Janet was great to deal with and made the arrival and entry super easy. Would definitely return!!!!

stunning views from this modern apt

We loved our stay in this beautiful apt! The views from all of the windows were spectacular. The apt was immaculate and perfectly situated on the mountain. The skiing was amazing in Les Houches and In Chamonix. We preferred the town of Les Houches over Chamonix. Les Houches is like a town out of a fairytale.There are great restaurants within walking distance of the apt. Our favorite restaurants were Le Basilic and les Enversins. The pastas, and duck were some of the best we have had anywhere in the world. We decided to go for a really expensive lunch in Chamonix one day. We dined at Le Bistrot. The food was nowhere near as good as the restaurants in les Houches.

The apt has a small garage which was great for keeping the car free from snow. It took a little while to master backing in to the garage, but was a really nice feature. The shower in the apt had plenty of hot water and great water pressure. We loved the heated towel rack. The bed was also very comfortable with high quality linens.If you are used to using washcloths to shower, you may want to bring some with you, as none are provided. There were wooden shutters outside on the balcony that you could close to provide privacy to the bedroom, I opened them every day to take in the beautiful views. There is a red binder in the apt that explains how to operate all of the appliances. The apt was very warm, and we hardly used the heaters in the apt. The garbage needs to be taken out and down the street to a container near the ski rental shop. If you plan on eating in a lot, you may want to pack a few extra garbage bags. Only one garbage bag was provided during our week long stay. There are 2 grocery stores on the same road as the apt. Make a right out of the apt, the first one you come to is called Carrefour and it's above the new tourist info building. This is the building where our favorite restaurant was: Les Enversins was also located. The other grocery store was further down the road on the right and is called Super U.

Even if you don't plan on skiing the Vallee Blanche, you should go to the top of Auguille du midi. The views are out of this world.

Highly recommended, beautiful apartment & area

We have just returned from our best family holiday ever.

We drove from the UK, via the tunnel, to Les Houches. The journey was excellent and very easy. Les Houches is just minutes from a main motorway, so access is not a worry anytime of year. We went prepared with shovel and snow socks, but didnt need them.

The apartment is lovely. It has everything you could ever need, plus lots of homely extras like DVDs and board games. The SKY TV with english channels were great too. We are a family of 5, and found the apartment spacious enough and perfect for our needs. Janet the owner is very friendly, and happy to answer any questions, and provides you with lots of information.

This was our first ski holiday, and found Les Houches perfect and beautiful. The apartments are so well designed for skiers, with ski lockers etc. The apartment is central in Les Houches, just minutes from ski lifts, shops, ski hire shops and restaurants.

We used the ESF Ski School for ski lessons in the mornings. Again we would recommend. We all went from complete novices to competent skiers in a week.

We ate at the pizzeria near Bellevue, which do very tasty pizzas. They also do takeaway.

I would recommend this apartment very highly. It is amazing, and we will certainly be returning!

Chalet Whymper..perfect base for hiking, relaxing!

We stayed for one week at Chalet Whymper (Sept. 2012) and it turned out to be the perfect location for us to explore the Mont Blanc area. It was our first trip to the French Alps and this chalet was everything we had hoped for. Janet was (is) an excellent host, kindly answering emails before as well as during our stay. The apartment is roomy, with lots and lots of storage space. The bedroom was plenty big and the bed super-comfortable. The kitchen rivaled my own at home, with every implement you could want, and more! We enjoyed being able to eat in after a long day out and just relax while looking at the mountain views. Comfortable couches in the sitting area plus the two balconies helped make this apartment welcoming and homey.

The area is quiet, but there are plenty of amenities nearby -- tourist office, specialty markets, a small supermarket, ATM -- all within easy walking distance. We were fortunate to have only one day of rain, so we did lots of hiking. Chamonix was an easy 10-minute drive, making it convenient to get to the major lifts. All in all, I would recommend Chalet Whymper without hesitation, and will definitely stay here again should we decide to return to this beautiful part of the world.

Les Houches is situated at the entrance to the Chamonix Valley, just 6km away from Chamonix town and an hour’s drive from Geneva airport. In winter Les Houches has its own ski area with 12 red runs, 5 blue runs and 4 green runs plus the black run La Verte (home of the Kandahar World Cup downhill race). The ski bus from Les Houches gives you access to the other 157 km of on piste in the Chamonix Valley. In the summer as well as the mountaineering there are breath-taking walks of all gradients, via ferrata, canyoning and white water rafting on the River Arve. For kids there are organised adventure days with Chamonix Guides, high ropes, a summer toboggan run, an animal park and swimming pool. In spring and autumn it is a cyclists’ paradise. For mountain bikers there’s enough technical single track to satisfy the hungers of even the most hardcore downhillers. For road cyclists there are the opportunities to ride the famous Cols: Col de La Colombiere, Col d’Aravis, and Joux Plane.

Ski: The ski and snowboard area of Les Houches extends from an altitude of 950 metres to 1900 metres. The terrain is extremely varied, providing enjoyment for all abilities with 12 red runs, 5 blue runs and 4 green runs. Plus the black run La Verte on which the Kandahar World Cup downhill race is run. Many of the runs are long descents through pine and larch forests. The lift system comprises of the Bellevue cable car (150 metres from Chalet Whymper), the Prarion gondola lift (500 metres from Chalet Whymper), 4 chair lifts (including the chair lift Coupe du Monde 150 metres from Chalet Whymper), 12 drag lifts and the Tramway du Mont-Blanc train. From the resort summit there is a breathtaking 360° panorama of the Mont-Blanc range. When necessary, artificial snow coverage is provided by 100 snow canons covering 900m of vertical drop. With the ski bus from Les Houches you can also access the other 157km of on piste (and limitless off piste) in the three other ski areas of the Chamonix Valley.

Apartment Chalet Whymper is a fully equipped self catering apartment available for booking all year round with secure individual garage parking and ski locker. There is a lift to all floors. There are two balconies, one accessible from the lounge and the other from the bedroom. The lounge balcony has two balcony tables and four chairs plus a three-seater bench from which you can view the ski run down to the Bellevue Cable Car and along the valley to the Rocher de Fizz mountain range. This balcony gets the afternoon sun. From the bedroom balcony there are views up the Chamonix Valley to the Aiguille du Midi. This balcony gets the morning sun.
