If you desire an idyllic holiday in the sun, Madeira with its stunning scenery, is for you. 38D Banana Grove, a south facing, semi-detached, fully furnished house, is in a peaceful, romantic setting, in the village of Estreito da Calheta. This is on the west coast of Madeira and is favoured for its beautiful weather and fantastic sunsets. It is only 150m above sea level and has spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and mountains, which twinkle with thousands of lights from the houses, at night time. There is a private garden and patio area, with garden furniture and a BBQ. Ample private parking, with remote controlled gates and a security phone system. It takes approximately 25 minutes to drive to the main bustling town of Funchal and 45 minutes to the airport.

About Mrs Christine Hunter

In 1976, when my children were young, I went into teaching. I left full time teaching in 2001 and went into the property business, much to the disbelief of my husband, family and friends. I bought a large 4 storey Victorian building on the Isle of Wight and converted it into 8 luxury flats, which I sold. I am still involved in the property business and love it.

Mrs Christine Hunter purchased this house in 2008

Why Mrs Christine Hunter chose Calheta

I started travelling to Madeira about 15 years ago and fell in love with the island and the people. I bought a large piece of land in 2004 and had 5 lovely houses built, which were completed in 2008, just in time for the 'financial slump'! Four of the houses I have now sold. and the 5th is being kept for for holiday lets. I particularly liked this piece of land because it was fairly flat, only 150m above sea level and had stunning views. I had the houses built because I didn't want a 'time-share'. I wanted something that I owned for as long as I wanted and didn't have to give back at the end of a certain period and I don't regret it at all.

What makes this house unique

With its easy access to the dual carriageway, I have the best of both worlds, being able to get easily to Funchal, if I want the bustle of a large city, or out into the beautiful country side for a walk but also to be able to spend my evenings on the patio or balcony of the house, listening to the crickets singing, looking out over the Atlantic Ocean and watching the twinkling lights appear on the mountainside in the evening light, truly magic!

Calheta is ideally set on the SW coast of Madeira, in one of the sunniest and warmest parts of the island. The sandy beach and Marina, with its waterside cafés and bars make it an ideal location for families and individuals alike. Easy access to the dual carriageway means that within 30 minutes you could either be in the bustling town of Funchal, with its harbour, casino, theatre, numerous bars, restaurants and night-life or in the tranquil area of Paul do Serra, for one of the many levada walks through the most beautiful, picturesque scenery. The amazing abundance of flowers, throughout the year, the wine and flower festivals and the friendly people make Madeira a truly wonderful experience.

Notes:
Madeira, which is Portuguese, is known as 'the floating garden' and is a lush, fertile, tropical paradise, boasting beautiful scenery, hospitable people and gleaming sunshine. It owes its warm, pleasant climate to the fact that it is only 350km from the coast of Africa, but 750km from mainland Portugal. It was officially discovered in 1415 by Joao Goncalves Zarco and this quaint 'old world' masterpiece of nature is a canvas alive with folklore and time honoured tradition, with charming, pristine villages decorating the island. The exports include bananas, sugar cane, Madeira wine, honey cake and poncha ( a locally made drink). The currency is the euro. Throughout the year there are festivals and the main ones for 2016 are:-The Carnivals in February. The Flower Festival in April. The Atlantic Festival in June. The Jazz Festival in July. The Wine Festival in August/September and of course the spectacular Fire Work Display at New Year.

A beautiful house on a beautiful island

  • 5 of 5

The house was very clean, and all the rooms were of very good quality. We were welcomed by the neighbour, who was very friendly. We had a beautiful view on the ocean and on the mountains.

The road from the airport to the house was easy to ride in approximately 1 hour.

We made a lot of road trips, wanderings, we went to the Dolphins by a catamaran, we visited Funchal, the caves in Sao Vicente.

So we had an excellent vacation on Madeira!!!

Simply perfect !

  • 4 of 5

Hello,

We had a very nice journey in Madeira. The property is exactly as described and really pleasant with superb views on the mountains on one side and the ocean on the other side. The house is very spacious, comfortable and quiet. Supermarkets and restaurants at 5 mns by car. Ideal for a family.

Madeira is a fantastic Island especially for people enjoying nature with a lot of ballades and excursions to do . No doubt if we have the chance to come back, we will stay here again !

We'll be back again there...

  • 5 of 5

We have been on Madeira for the third time and this house was for us a very good choice. The house is big and well equipped. Even if the place is very very quiet and there is no traffic, the private parking gives an additional comfort. Supermarket and restaurants are within 5 minutes with the car. It's a very good location for the walkers.

Most important is the local microclimate. This house is just beside the viilage Jardim do Mar which is the most sunny and warm place on Madeira, so you can be almost sure to take your breakfast outside under the sky. When we return to Madeira, we'll probably take this accommodation again.
