Bramble Cottage is utterly charming and newly renovated. In the friendly village of Holbeton. It is a five minute drive from Mothecombe Beach - South Devon's most unspoilt estuary and beach. I grew up playing there as a child because it is famous for its beauty and safety - no dangerous currents. There is a large carpark and fabulous cafe by the beach. Or rent a bicycle from the village pub and take one of their hampers for the day. The village shop will deliver milk, fresh bread and croissants waiting on your doorstep each morning.
The cottage, built in the 1700s opens into a porch for coats and shoes (we have a box of slippers) and then into a front reception room with games and a piano. From there you walk into the sitting room with big squishy sofas, a wood-burning stove and large TV with all the TV channels, Netflix and a DVD player. It's very much also our family holiday home so please borrow the books, DVDs and CDs - but leave them behind!
From there you walk into a very large eat-in kitchen with extendable table, Huge fridge freezer, cooker, washing machine, dishwasher and microwave. Finally, a south-facing conservatory, flooded with sunlight. The south-facing garden is a village secret. Opening up like a fan in front of you it is has a lawn and many beautiful shrubs, a decking platform to enjoy sunny breakfasts and lunch right through to evening barbecues. There is even a little path to play petanque.
The cottage is not suitable for small children, very elderly or disabled people as it has steep stairs inside up to the bedrooms and no wheelchair access. We would not allow children under eight in the cottage (we particularly love our brand new sofas!).
Upstairs there are three bedrooms each separated by a bathroom giving quiet and privacy. The front and back bedrooms each have a king size bed and the middle room can be one or two singles. When we use the middle room as one single, it doubles as a yoga room. We can make up the beds with duvet covers, sheets and pillowcases (duvets and pillows always available) and provide towels or you can bring your own reducing the cost of your holiday. Similarly, the house is run purely on electricity, so we read the meter together at the beginning and end of your stay. So you only pay for what you use. If you are careful to turn radiators off when you go out then your holiday will simply cost you less. Please call us on 07803 504759 to go through this in detail. There is a tumble dryer upstairs in the main bathroom.
Holbeton is in the South Hams, a protected "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty". Close to the sea and the National Trust Coastal Path and also a short drive up onto Dartmoor with its wild landscapes, ancient woodlands and beautiful castles and other historic buildings. Plymouth is a twenty minute drive away. There you will find many cinemas, restaurants, my favourite aquarium and even a dry ski slope! There are many other lovely, old market towns nearby, such as Totnes, Modbury and Kingsbridge. This part of Devon is well known for organic farming and alternative therapies. Totnes is packed with organic shops and restaurants. The nearby Dartington Estate has concerts and restaurants in its magnificent buildings, glorious gardens and woodland walks as well as a famous literary festival.
You are also close to other beaches and river estuaries such as Noss Mayo (fabulous pub), Salcombe, Bigbury and Bantham - to mention just a few. The cottage is filled with brochures and we can recommend many great beaches to visit and places to eat. Sharpham vineyard is nearby and many excellent farm shops. We have two great pubs in the village as well as our fantastic post office and shop, selling all essentials, fresh bread, local ham and logs for the fire. And, of course, all the big supermarkets will deliver if you plan in advance. So you could just leave the car behind and come by train to Totnes or Plymouth and take a taxi to the cottage. We do not have parking outside the house but we have a private, designated parking space for two vehicles in the nearby village pub, The Mildmay Colours.
Across the other side of the river Erme is the village of Kingston. This also has a lovely beach and is a great place to drive around to catch the evening sun as it faces west. A perfect place for sunset barbecues.
It is incredibly important to us that we talk to the people who want to rent our cottage as it is filled with things that we love and we want to ensure that it is cared for and loved by our guests. We also want to make it possible to rent without spending a fortune so that anyone can enjoy it. That is why we charge separately for bedding, towels and electricity. So we will not accept bookings without a phone conversation.
Although we are in a magical, beautiful location, Holbeton is only twenty minutes' drive from the A38 - so if you are arriving late at night it's a very straightforward journey to find us along wide country roads just off the motorway. Devon is fabulous but many of the villages in the South Hams are a long way from the motorway down tiny lanes with few passing places. Not always the best way to start a holiday! So it's also really easy to get out from Holbeton and explore the area during your stay.
