We've been renting homes in Taos yearly for over 20 years. We've had the pleasure of staying at many nice ones but none as delightful as this home. The view is a magnificent one of pastures and soaring mountains and the diversity and beauty of the changing weather is just incredible. The house is at the end of the road and is very private. You can lounge on the expansive patios and toast the sunset or host a delicious dinner around the outdoor grill. Later, climb the spiral stairs and play a few games of pool with the new sound system providing your personal sound track. This is a house designed to create comfort.
Located between Ski Valley and Taos you're minutes from everything including many excellent restaurants, galleries and more dramatic hiking trails than you'll probably have time to explore.
Ron, the owner is a great guy who is very caring about your needs.
I have mostly all good things to say about this house, with only a handful of Small issues that are in no way deal breakers, but things that i believe can be easily fixed.
Let me get the little things out of the way first:
1. There is a spiral staircase that leads up to the second floor bonus room. this staircase is very narrow and a bit scary. the frame is metal and it wobbles a bit, is coming apart at one or two seams, has areas that are rotted away and have been "patched" with bars. the stairs themselves feel very unstable. if you are not very balanced on your feet i would suggest just not going upstairs if you can help it.
2. In that upstairs bonus room it was very hot, and actually too warm in the bedrooms too. You'll find that the thermostats all over the house have labels asking you to not touch them. It's understandable the owner wouldn't want people messing with them, however they should have all been set much cooler since it was a warm week.
3. When we arrived, the bonus room upstairs had dead flies all over the carpet everywhere (and a few other little bugs), especially along the edges of the floor. as we knew kids would be up there, probably in bare feet, my husband went in search of a vacuum to get rid of them before anyone else arrived.
4. I'm not sure the cleaning crew cleaned the showers/tubs before we arrived as we found hair in a couple of them.
Aside from those things i will say, this house is beautiful. it's so very southwest which is what we wanted. there was bed space for everyone (11 of us) and the beds were comfy. we Loved having the pool table, and were able to watch all our shows on netflix movies and the World Series with no problem. All the bedrooms have tv's which was nice. We had no trouble using the keypad/codes to get in. There is a community indoor pool on the street and the kids loved that. the bathrooms are spacious. all the essentials in the kitchen so we could cook. the owner was prompt and friendly with answering all my messages. the home is out of the way from town, on the way to the Taos Ski Valley. the drive into Taos was MAYBE 20 minutes if that, and didn't ever feel like a long drive. It was a great location. There were also 3 gorgeous horses from the property next door who would come by in the mornings to say hello and pose for pictures. I would definitely recommend this place for a family/group and hope to stay again myself sometime!
This is a lovely property. The views are incredible...absolutely can't be beat. It's a very quiet location. Peaceful, quiet, relaxing...just what we were looking for. We have stayed in this home several times and hope to stay again.
Overall the house was great, and in a great location. Plenty of space for a large group, plenty of beds, and TV's everywhere one might need. My only major complaint has to do with temperature control. We went in early July, with daytime highs in the 80's, and lows at night in the low 50's. There is no A/C. Some of the windows did not have screens, many of the windows were difficult to open, or even had broken hardware. The master might only get down to 77 by sunrise (even with windows open, and temps in the 50's), but not lower. One bedroom (with 3/4 only screens) was typically above 85 degrees in the morning. Again, great house, great location, plenty of space, plenty of TV's, VERY PRIVATE--but for my trip, also, very warm. The owner responded very promptly to each contact.
Our family of five (three kids 9, 6 and 3) stayed at Ron's beautiful villa for 2 weeks and a half and had an amazing time!
Ron made a special effort to greet us upon arrival and showed us around. Ron was very kind to share his Apple TV with a great selection of 500 movies to keep us entertained.
The villa is very well maintained, tastefully decorated and furnished. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to cook a gourmet meal, from spices, cooking utensils to a nice gas stove top and oven. The house is located at the end of the community drive way so you are not looking into other houses. The view is spectacular from the backyard towards the mountains. We spent many hours sitting outside listening to music and had many BBQs. The kids enjoyed playing in the yard and star gazing at night. There are plenty of wildlife around, many birds, rabbits, chipmunks, meerkats and coyotes.
The villa is within 20 minutes drive to Cid's Food Market(the local Whole Food equivalents), many great restaurants and hiking trails. We enjoyed the hikes immensely and even saw a couple of bighorn sheep grazing away. There were still knee deep snow on the trails by Taos Ski Valley.
We had such a wonderful time and hope to come back to this incredible holiday home again. It was a pleasure to meet you and thanks again for everything, Ron!
I booked this home for our family's Thanksgiving week vacation and had really a wonderful time in the area. We had done a similar trip 2 years prior and stayed at another unit in the Arroyo Secco compound and fell in love with the care the owners gave to their property - it made you feel as though it were your home. That being said when my wife and I checked into this unit on Saturday evening what we found was what was once a beautiful home that has been turned into just another rental property without the care given to details. Without going into too many details, let's just say the property was not the cleanest I've ever stayed in with old dusty fake plants in several rooms, bugs in light fixtures, cobwebs in corners of several rooms, older furniture, etc. I spoke with the owner/property manager a few times and he did send out his crew once to hit the high spots again but then became quite indignant that we weren't satisfied with the effort. At that point i quit communicating with him and moved on with our week as I didn't need the added stress as we were on a vacation! A few examples of the property needing some upkeep - Main Living Room windows showing the beautiful mountains were barely able to see through as the seals are broken and fogged up constantly. Labels on every drawer and cabinet door in the kitchen - quite tacky! So so cookware and an aging stove. Majority of the pillows in the windowseats needed recovering or were uncovered and wrapped in a blanket - really! With 3 Kiva fireplaces in the home and early winter you would think to burn a fire but owner request you can only burn "fake logs" which you have to go procure at the local hardware store at $35 p/6 logs - not what i was expecting to say the least. Bed linens were clean but old and towels were at a minimum for a five bedroom house. With a little TLC and simple refurbishment the property could be a wonderful home again but not until then. Outside built in grill was broken so there was a free standing propane grill but no propane in the tank -had to go into town and exchange one - lovely touch! Very few of the outdoor lights were functional as they were either knocked down or just weren't working. We found next to the driveway at the garage door random yard tools and kid's sleds that had just been left there - hmm? Don't get me wrong the bones of the home are quite good - it's just the details that are being neglected. Just don't book unless that's what you're expecting!
