An exceptional apartment in a vibrant neighborhood convenient to Metro, restaurants & sights
Philip met us for a tour of the apartment--even though we were two hours late!. He has a book of instructions, and suggestions for local restaurants--many of which we followed. We found that UBER could find us, and the apartment is convenient to three Metro stations, Belleville, Goncourt, Parmentier. There are several terrific restaurants with a few blocks; we tried them all and settled on Canibale and l'Assassine as favorites. Belleville reminds us of NYC's West and East Villages at their most vibrant. This is an exciting, cosmopolitan neighborhood, the "new" Paris. The apartment is large, open and spacious. The two showers and bathrooms are a bonus. Two of the bedrooms are curtained off from the rest, so it is necessary to be aware that noise carries. Phillipe was available for questions. Bonus, the apartment is loaded w/ great books.
Indeed, the neighboorhood of Belleville offers the highest density of bookstores in Paris. Many art galleries have opened recently. A number of cafés, restaurants, foodstores of all kind. Vibrant is a good qualificative for the life around.
Great for a family!
We are 7 people, and not many (affordable) apartments in Paris are big enough. This one has 3 beds and a fold-out sofa bed, plus a big table for 8, a really functional kitchen and 2 bathrooms. There are plenty of shelves and cubbies to store clothes and toiletries, and a clothes washer with drying racks. It’s a short walk from Line 11 Metro at Goncourt or Belleville, so access is good. The neighborhood is gritty but friendly, all the shops were helpful and patient with our weak French. Our favorite cafe was Les P’tit Indecises, but there are several along Parmentier and Oberkampf (and a gluten free bakery near Oberkampf and Republique, Chambelland).
The only drawback we found was that leaving windows open at night for cool air also brought in too much street noise. But overall, the place is very comfortable.
Fabulous Loft in a so-so area
My review is going to be all the information I would have wanted to know from other reviews. Also my perspective is we are from Seattle so are use to a somewhat bigger city feel. First the pros:
The Loft is huge, wifi is great, 2 bathrooms are wonderful, and having a washer was fabulous. The water pressure is also amazing, and this loft has a ton of electrical outlets! Also the metro is close so you can get anywhere in the city just fine. There is also an amazing bread store not too far and a really big grocery store close by too. Working with Philippe was great too. He is super responsive. We never met him in person, but he provided all the information we needed and was super easy to work with (Thanks!)
Cons: As others stated only one room has a door. It would be easy to fix with barn/ sliding doors for the bedroom on the same level as the kitchen. The loft is mainly made out of concrete so everything echos. Also this apartment all the windows face the street which is a busy street. There was always street sweepers, flashing lights, or lots of noise. Even one night we had really loud music being blasted right outside the loft at 2am. I wouldn't say I ever felt horribly unsafe but I wouldn't say I ever felt completely safe either. In Seattle we just call this a so-so neighborhood.
So overall not having known Paris before we left I would have probably picked to stay in a nicer area, but I would say this loft would have been a lot more money in another area. So a good value for Paris.
Spacious and beautiful- felt like a local!
Five of my friends and I traveled to Paris and when our Airbnb cancelled on us just a week before, we were lucky to find Philippe’s place! It was so spacious in there- we loved having a big table to enjoy cheese from a shop just around the corner, La Fromagerie Goncourt. It was nice to have 2 bathrooms as well with a group of girls- hot water and everything was clean in there! Honestly it’s probably one of the largest apartments in Paris! I would recommend this for a group of friends, but maybe not couples as it echoes in the space a lot so you can hear pretty much everything going on. We would definitely stay here again! Philippe was easy to communicate with and let us store our bags in a locker in the building when we arrived early from the airport. Also he met us at a restaurant a few blocks away to walk with us to the place- very kind and accommodating host! Merci, Philippe!
Feel like a local in a Parisian district.
I always felt that this apartment was a good place to « vivre Paris » off tracks.
Not appropriate for children and/or women traveling alone
This apartment is NOT a good location for children or women traveling alone. There is clearly a hangout spot for men right across the street. We were harassed by some of them when arriving at the apartment, and men were hanging outside until at least 2 am - sitting on the window ledges of the apartment itself.
We wound up vacating the property after one night and moving to a hotel. The owner refunded some of our money.
The apartment itself is large and spacious, with a washing machine, wifi, and a well-equipped kitchen. But it is not in a safe area.
The area where the apartment is situated, like many Parisian districts, is full of life and stories.Within 300 steps from the apartment, you can find two christian churches, two synagogas, one mosquea, two student residences , one migrant workers residence, one backpacker hostel, AND groceries, bars,, boulangerie, fromagerie, ...
That is life in big cities in Europe : a criss-cross of people sharing the same streets. No gated communities around there.
Sorry for the bad feeling with Gayle. I did refund her with half the price because feeling safe is vital for our guests.
Just Right For Us!
We had a great stay here for a few days. All six of us had enough sleeping space and bathroom access to have an enjoyable "home base" as we covered/toured Paris. A few blocks walk from Republique which was where we would catch a hop on/hop off bus (which is what we used to get around the city). We enjoyed that as we saw most of the city as well as decided what we were going to do. There are a few markets within walking distance and the apartment had everything we needed to make meals every night. It made for a great launching point for us to get to every part of Paris. We did not use the metro but is is not far from the apartment. Overall the apartment was just right for our needs and allowed us to have a great week!
Ian pointed out an interesting wal to discover Paris from the apartment : walk to the Place de la République, catch a hop on/hop off bus, decide what to see more profundly. It can also be done by bike, by foot, by boat or by metro. Paris is rich of possibilities, begining at Loft Espace et Lumière.
