Overview

Catania Apartment Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 4 sleeps

Two apartments, that can be rented separately, both with a terrace on the waterfront, right next to the main square of Santa Tecla. From the terrace you can admire a sweeping view over the bay of the small fishing village called Santa Tecla, its square and the sea. Right next to the house are stairs to the shores of lava rock. When you plunge into the sea in front of the house, it feels as though you are diving straight into a salt-water pool. Casa Maestrale is located on the ‘Lemon Riviera', the coast between Catania and Taormina, so-called due to the infinite number of lemon groves found at the foot of the volcano Etna. In summer Santa Tecla is a seaside destination for the islanders who enjoy the pebbled beach that distances only 400 metres from the house. Santa Tecla has a small port, a village square at the seaside with an ice-cream shop, a bar, various pizzerias and two excellent seafood restaurants. For example the renamed and affordable seafood restaurant 'La Bettola dei Marinai', only 50 meters from the house.

The terrace offers a spectacular view of the bay of Santa Tecla and is ideal for outdoor eating, and aperitifs as you watch the sun setting over the village or enjoy the sunrise from the sea in the morning.

Excellent location and views

  • 4 of 5

The property is in an excellent location with a private balcony with uninterrupted views of the sea. It is also very convenient for exploring the many sights in the east of Sicily and around Etna. The provision of air conditioning in the main bedroom is a great benefit for the hot summer nights.

Fantastic location, apartments needs some items

  • 3 of 5

We flew into Catania for a 4 day break in Sicily and found this great apartment. The town of Santa Tecla was perfect for us; it was quiet and very authentic (no one spoke English) with a number of excellent restaurants, a supermarket, a corner shop 100 yards from the apartment and a butcher.

The apartment was up on the 2nd floor and accessed via a communal courtyard. It was spacious for the 2 of us but would have been crowded if we'd used the second room/sofa bed and there'd been 4 people staying there.

The balcony was incredible and totally private with an uninterrupted view of the sea. From the bed you could open the shutters and doors in the morning and see the waves against the rocks and the clear blue sky - bliss!!

Unfortunately the kitchen was not very well equipped - no bowls, only 3 wine glasses, no large glasses for water, no kettle, no power sockets (!!) and no ice tray!

Another let down was the fact that there was zero outdoor furniture on the balcony to be able to sit out there and enjoy it. For the price I would have expected a table and chairs (as shown on the photo) and a couple of sun loungers and a nice little extra would have been a small BBQ. Instead we had to drag the mattress out onto the balcony to sunbathe on each day and move the dining table outside to eat breakfast and lunch.

Another downer (which contributes to the 3 star rating) was the cleanliness of the apartment - it was really quite dusty.

We did receive a very warm welcome (and a free bottle of wine!) from Lorenzo and parking was right outside the building.

Couple of tips - the coffee at the bar in the square right next to the apartment was the best in town. As a treat walk along to the purple hotel (to the right as you look out the balcony) for an afternoon of reading and drinking by their infinity pool, it's quite a stunning hotel!

Overall we had a wonderful break and regardless of the little things the apartment was fabulous and we would absolutely stay there again...I would just come with my own ice tray :)

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. I will make sure that the kitchen and the balcony will get some new equipments and furniture. As for the cleanliness, the apartment is usually very clean, perhaps since yours was a last minute booking and the first of the season there was not much time to have a deeper cleaning.

Santa Tecla is an excellent base from which to explore eastern Sicily. The quaint fishing village lies halfway between Catania and Taormina and just three kilometres from Acireale, a pretty little city, built on a plateau of lava, that is known for its Baroque churches. Giardini Naxos, a seaside resort with beautiful sandy beaches, is just 20 kilometres from Santa Tecla. Beside it we find Taormina ‘the pearl of the Mediterranean’ and the most exclusive seaside resort in Sicily. Its ancient Greek theatre is world famous for its extraordinary panoramic views. Santa Maria la Scala and Aci Trezza are pleasant seaside villages near Santa Tecla. Travelling south, one hour’s drive away lies Syracuse.

Santa Tecla is also an excellent base from which to explore Mount Etna and its surroundings. The villages of Etna, such as Trecastagni, Zafferana Etnea and Randazzo, are famous for their ancient lava flows, the architecture of their seventeenth century churches, their delicious local produce and the hospitality of the villagers. Situated 700 metres above sea level, they are a favourite retreat of the city dwellers who, in summer are in search of cool, fresh air, while in winter are in search of snow for skiing. Few people are aware that Etna is a popular location for skiers in winter. On some glorious days in winter, it’s even possible to ski the frozen slopes in the morning enjoying a wonderful panoramic view of the Mediterranean, and then, the same afternoon, go and sunbathe on the beaches below!
